I'm trying to figure this out. I know that the original MS support deadline for its JVM was September 2004, but that was extended. As of now, what is the new "drop-dead date"? And whatever that date is -- will Microsoft continue to release security fixes for JVM up until that date? I'm getting ready to roll out some new PCs to my office, and I have an installation package worked out to install MSJVM. As long as it'll be supported (patch-wise) for a few more years, I'll put it on my PCs. After all, we have an application that kind of needs it.

Is an a/b/g wireless card worth it? (public use)
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Hardware Hangout
So "a" networks are pretty much non-existent, and are more of a home use sort of thing? But just so I know, regarding mini-pci cards that handle all three -- can they be a little "buggy"? I would think so. Since a and b/g are not compatible, I'd think there could be some flakiness if they co-existed on one card. -
I plan to order some mini-pci wireless cards for the laptops in my office (Dell Latitude D600s). I figure I'll go with either the Dell 1350 (b/g) or the 1450 (a/b/g) for $20 more. The reason for getting these is for wireless connectivity outside of the office, particularly convention centers and the like. But do public places ever use "a", or are they strictly "b" and "g"? I'm not really worried about cost, since it's not my money anyway. I'm more concerned about possible system problems. If I wouldn't ever find an "a" network, why install a more complicated card, with more possibilities for conflicts?

@Nick2588 Good points. Maybe I'll just leave it alone; after all, I'm already setting the cache size at 300 MB, so that should be good enough. When the cache fills up, I'm assuming it just automatically deletes the oldest entries to make space for new ones?

I think someone once posted a tweak to turn off the StickyKeys shortcut, but it didn't cover FilterKeys or ToggleKeys. So here are all three: ;-----Disable StickyKeys shortcut----- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\StickyKeys] "Flags"="506" ;-----Disable Filterkeys shortcut----- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\Keyboard Response] "Flags"="122" ;-----Disable ToggleKeys shortcut----- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\ToggleKeys] "Flags"="58"

Brain fart alert! It turns out that while this was in my tweaks file: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer] @="" "Show_FullURL"=dword:00000000 , I found this a few lines down in the same tweak file: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer] @="" "Show_FullURL"=dword:00000001 I don't know how that happened, but it was causing me my troubles.

Another question -- what is the reg tweak to empty Internet Explorer cache upon shutdown? I saw it somewhere, but I can't find it now. I already applied the tweak to reduce the size of the cache to 300 MB, and I think that this would make a nice companion. But what exactly is "shutdown"? Is that the closing of the browser, or shutting down Windows completely? And I have a few concerns about this: 1. If the cache is always being cleared, what effect (if any) would that have on Web surfing? (i.e. performance issues) And what does that do to things like streaming audio/video? 2. Does this also clear Cookies, or is that a separate thing, just like when you manually clear the cache? 3. Let's say the size of the cache is set to 300 MB, and after a full day of Web surfing it is filled..... how long does the cache-clearing take? Will Windows hang for a little bit during shutdown? Sorry for all the questions, but this is for my office and I need to be sure.

How do you turn off friendly URLs? I've tried this one: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer] @="" "Show_FullURL"=dword:00000000 But that doesn't seem to work.

A list of all "bad" programs (re: spyware) ?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Windows XP
I don't know about the others, but isn't "savenow" an actual spyware program, the kind that is secretly bundled with something else? I'm actually looking for the programs that people install normally, but have spyware bundled with them. -
I'd like to compile a list of ALL the programs out there that are known to contain spyware or some similar garbage. This is mainly for my office (so I can have a "banned" list), but I'm sure others would benefit as well. Here's what I know of so far: Weatherbug My Web Search Hotbar Webshots I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Visual Basic compatibility - Office 2000 and XP
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Microsoft Office
A little more detail. The main gist of this application is an Access database, but it also includes some Wrod documents. One error I'm getting is the part where a Word document is supposed to open in the background and a print job is sent to a dot-matrix printer. I am getting the following error message: When I click on debug, the following line of the VBS code is highlighted: Like I already said, I don't know anything about VBS. But is there anything about that code that wouldn't be compatibile with Office XP, if it worked fine in Office 2000? FYI -- just for the hell of it, I commented out that one line, since it seems redundant. Then it not only doesn't give me an error, it doesn't even print. -
Let me just say from the start that I know nothing about VBS. A few years ago someone was contracted to create an Access application for our office. It's a complicated database with a lot of Word documents involved via mail merge. I think I'm describing it right... Anyway, we are planning to move from Office 2000 to Office XP. I've been testing this application and it is failing. Before I start posting a bunch of code, I wanted to know -- if this kind of thing was created for Office 2000, is there any reason why part of it would not work under Office XP?

Am I missing anything?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Oh yeah, Java. No MSJVM (due to the legal bruhaha), so I'm using Sun JVM. -
Create a self-executing package?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I tried Autoit, but I couldn't understand what I was doing. I suppose I could give it another go... -
I want to make the XP workstations in my office as user-friendly as I can, without going overboard. I have included all of the following: Flash Shockwave player QuickTime Windows Media Player 9 DIVX codecs Real Player Alternative Am I missing anything? I know there are other things I could install (like Winamp), but of course WMP will work just fine for mp3s. I just want to make sure that all of the A/V bases are covered.

Create a self-executing package?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I tried installrite, and it actually works very well. But I'm still aving a problem, and I think I figured out why -- the installation involves over 2000 registry additions/changes, and over 1000 of them are in HKCU. I think that's why the program fails when I log on as a different user. Oh well, thanks anyway. -
I have had problems with OE being completely removed. Outlook sometimes wouldn't run, giving me an error saying something to the effect of "Outlook Express not detected".
-
Is there a tool that I can use to create a one-click self-executing package? The problem is that our office uses a program from Lexis-Nexis that does NOT support silent installations -- I've tried everything, and it can't be done. It also doesn't support the creation of an .iss file. I've tried using SMS installer to run the installation and create a package, but I can't get that to work right. I guess it requires a lot of code "cleanup" that is over my head. Is there any other utility I can use?

Example of $$Rename.txt
Professor Frink replied to skin2003's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Here's mine. The entries may not make any sense, since they are things for my office. But it should give you an idea how it works: [\WINNT\ZAWSYS] SetupM~1.exe="SetupMsgBox.exe" SetupM~2.exe="SetupMsgBoxDriver.exe" Suppor~1.LNK="Support Information.LNK" Zawntm~1.bat="Zawntmenu.bat" Make sure you put it in the \$oem$\$1 folder. -
Domain Login Problem
Professor Frink replied to monstersnatch's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Have you tried it without these lines? CreateComputerAccountInDomain=Yes DoOldStyleDomainJoin=Yes If that workstation name already exists in Active Directory, wouldn't it create a conflict? I had a similar problem. It turns out that the workstation name was registered in Active Directory as Windows 2000, and I was now logging on as XP. So I deleted the workstation from AD and immediately recreated it, then logged on with the new XP workstation, and it worked! -
That did it. Thanks! . . . . . . I hate to keep asking, but this is other thing is REALLY bugging me. I added the following to my tweak file: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] "ScreenSaveActive"="0" "ScreenSaverIsSecure"="0" "SCRNSAVE.EXE"="" But those changes were never applied. So I also added a separate .reg file to my final batch file with the exact same keys (so now it's being applied twice). Still nothing. But when the install is done, if I log on and double click that EXACT SAME .reg file and reboot, it works. What the heck?!? It is doing what I want -- turning off the default screensaver but allowing it to be turned back on. But why won't it work during my unattended install?
-
Thanks, but I'm looking for a registry tweak so it can be a part of my unattended install.

Is there a tweak to remove the volume icon from the system tray?

The ATI/Half-Life 2 deal is dead, right?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Gamers Hangout
I think I saw a list once, and I only remember seeing the 9800XT and the 9800XT. Since the 9800Pro is more expensive (and better), you'd expect it to be included, but maybe not. Stupid. @ Shun Di : Well, it wasn't JUST you.... Since I'm willing to pay for a 9600XT, I figure I can justify an extra $25-50 for what looks like a major improvement. But I don't think I can justify another $200+ to get a 9800XT... that's a liiiitle too much. EDIT -- I found the info site: ATI Half-Life 2 Offer The FAQ lists the following cards as eligible: RADEON 9800XT ALL-IN-WONDER® 9600 PRO RADEON 9800XT Alien Alienware's AREA-51M Notebooks with ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 Module So I'm out of luck. Bastards.
