Hotfixes For Windows XP Professional SP1
Professor Frink replied to Aaron's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
But I though that the /O switch was only to "Overwrite OEM Files without prompting", thus speeding up the installation, but nothing else. -
On our new office PCs, I am installing Roxio 5.3.5.10 (since that is what we are licensed for ). I've been reading a little about ASPI, but I am not totally clear about it. I have the details on installing the newest ASPI 4.71.2, which is basically copying four files into the System32 folder. But if I am installing Roxio, is an ASPI update even needed? Keeping in mind the version of Roxio that I am using, am I better off with the ASPI update, or just leave it alone? Or will it make no difference at all? FWIW -- without doing anything with ASPI, when I run aspichk.exe, the results tell me that all four components are not installed. On a related note -- I have read that the native Windows XP CD burning service does not play well with other burning programs (Nero, etc). But since I'm installing Roxio, will the XP service affect me at all?

We have new LCD monitors here, and due to the high resolution, I need to tell Internet Explorer to "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages." Then, the default View > Text Size (medium) is too big, so I set it to smallest. But every once in a while, it goes back to medium. Is there a way to lock that in, like with a reg edit or something? And what makes it go back at all? On a related subject -- I have already tried the registry trick to set up High Resolution in IE: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] "UseHR"=dword:00000001 But then it makes Web images stretched and blurry. Is there anything to be done about that? Or perhaps there is another solution that someone else here uses? I need to do something, because with a resolution of 1280x1024, and the default IE settings, some web pages look terrible.

Hotfixes For Windows XP Professional SP1
Professor Frink replied to Aaron's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Why do my updates keep showing up in Add/Remove Programs? I was sure I was doing it right. Here is my svcpack.inf file: [Version] Signature="$Windows NT$" MajorVersion=5 MinorVersion=1 BuildNumber=2600 [SetupData] CatalogSubDir="\i386\Update" [ProductCatalogsToInstall] [SetupHotfixesToRun] JS56NEN.exe /Q:A /R:N 823182.exe /Q /N /Z 823353.exe /Q:A /R:N 824105.exe /Q /N /Z 824141.exe /Q /N /Z 825119.exe /Q /N /Z 826939.exe /Q /N /Z 828035.exe /Q /N /Z 828741.exe /Q /N /Z 835732.exe /Q /N /Z 837001.exe /Q /N /Z 839645.exe /Q /N /Z 840315.exe /Q /N /Z 840374.exe /Q /N /Z 841873.exe /Q /N /Z 842773.exe /Q /N /Z 867801.exe /Q:A /R:N DX9NTopk.exe WMP9MM2.exe 828026.exe /Q /N /Z qchain.exe Am I doing something wrong there? -
We just got some new LCD monitors, and they need a high resolution to get a clear picture. Unfortunately, that means everything is small, and I need to set the DPI to 120 (i.e. 125%). Is there a specific registry key to set that in my unattended installation? I tried to find it via regsnap, but I ended up with 50+ keys to sort out. On a related note, how about a key to set large fonts?
-
I tried that, and my batch file doesn't find the folder. Has anyone successfully deleted that folder through a batch file? If so, please post the code, or how you did it. Thanks!
-
But how do I get rid of it with my clean.cmd? If I say rmdir "c:\Ý" that doesn't work. And rmdir "c:\Y" doesn't work either. Is there any way to get rid of it automatically?
-
Alanoll: Yes, I did install Quicktime. But Quicktime has been in my unattended install for a while now, and I don't ever remember that folder appearing before.

I just noticed this new folder -- Ý-- at the root of C:, and it is empty. Does anybody know what it is, and where it came from?

Windows Media Player as a DVD player?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Well, I'm not worried about legality, since we're fully licensed for PowerDVD anyway. But if that isn't a very current version of the decoder, will that affect me at all? And if so, am I able to somehow pull the decoder out of the PowerDVD installation package that I have? -
You know, the one that looks like this: I'm running my unattended installation on some new computers, and that message pops up after the automatic logon, when my batch file runs, and stays there the whole time until my batch file causes a reboot. I'm not sure what it's referring to exactly (chipset, maybe?), but has that happened to anyone else before? Should I ignore it? Is there a way to make it go away? Would I be better off doing a reboot right there, and then running my main batch file on a second automatic logon (and if so, what would be the setup for that)? FYI -- as far as I can tell, if I let it go everything seems to run fine. But it still gives me the creeps.....

Windows Media Player as a DVD player?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
jdoe: So I can just throw that msi file into my batch file along with everything else, and WMP is now a fully-functional DVD player? -
Searching the forum for "codec" brings up a lot of hits, and it's hard to sort it all out.... What would I need to do exactly to get WMP9 working as a DVD player? I have full installations for both PowerDVD and WinDVD, but I like to keep my programs down to a minimum (this is for my office). Plus, I'm having problems with an unattended PowerDVD (see HERE). I know that by default, WMP can't play DVDs. So what can I do to turn it into a DVD player? Is there a codec I can simply extract from either of those programs, and drop it in the System32 folder? It's probably not that easy, though.

good external DVD burner?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I think I'm going to go with the Plextor model PX-708UF/SW, which is the external version of the highly-rated PX-708A. It gets very high marks, plus has both USB 2.0 and Firewire. This is for my office, so it's not really my money anyway. So why not go with a brand that I really trust? Thanks guys! -
good external DVD burner?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
<---- id***. I forgot all about those enclosures. In that case, what is a really good multi-format internal burner? I'd ask for enclosure recommendations, but they're all kind of the same, aren't they? -
I plan to get one for our office here, one of those "just in case" sort of things. I definitely need it to be external (USB 2.0), and I want it to be multi-format (both "+" and "-"). Any suggestions?

Hotfixes For Windows XP Professional SP1
Professor Frink replied to Aaron's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
It's already been said that this replaces 832894. But does anyone know for sure what other updates are replaced, if any? I want to make sure I'm not applying anything I don't have to. Just for the heck of it, here is my svcpack list: JS56NEN.exe /q:a 823182.exe /z /q 823353.exe /q:a 824105.exe /z /q 824141.exe /z /q 825119.exe /z /q 826939.exe /z /q 828035.exe /z /q 828741.exe /z /q 832894.exe /q:a 831167.exe /q:a 835732.exe /z /q 837001.exe /z /q 839645.exe /z /q 840315.exe /z /q 840374.exe /z /q 841873.exe /z /q 842773.exe /z /q DX9NTopk.exe WMP9MM2.exe 828026.exe /z /q qchain.exe Then later on I apply: 832483 839643 816093 870669 So am I applying anything extraneous? And while I'm at it, am I missing anything? -
are ZIP drives relevant anymore?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
@ DarkPhoenix: Very true. Now if only USB flash drives were bootable..... -
I'm debating whether to get an external ZIP drive for my office. The only way it would ever be used is if someone came from outside with a ZIP disk (contractor, etc). But nowadays, what are the odds that that would even happen?

MSJVM timeline?
Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Sorry, another question. After adding MSJVM 3810 into my build (without including patch 816093), I went to Windows Update and noticed that it wasn't prompting me for 816093. Nevertheless, I need to install 816093, right, even though it's not telling me to do so? -

Hey, where did that page come from? Sweet, thanks! -

Professor Frink replied to Professor Frink's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
BTW -- 3810 is the most current version, right? This is how I'm installing it. This is pretty much it, correct, putting on 3805 and then updating it to 3810? start /wait msjavx86.exe /Q:A /R:N start /wait MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe /Q:A /R:N start /wait qchain.exe This has probably been answered before, but searching for MSJVM brings up an awful lot of threads! -

Whew. That's plenty of time -- the PCs will be practically out of lease by then. Thanks!
