  1. I assume you are making a large enough FAT32 partition? And is everything otherwise normal up until that point -- the whole process of boot > fdisk > format > connect to network > start XP installation ?
  2. Is it an option to do this over a network? I think that'd be easier than using a PCMCIA CD-ROM (which can be fickle, especially from DOS).
  3. Hey, you were right. I was missing the delete line. I think it's working now -- thanks!
  4. Thanks for the answers. I've decided to drop back and use an earlier driver version. I was using the latest, version 61.77: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77 Instead I'm using 61.76 from a week prior, which is certified: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.76.html @schalti -- thanks for the tip. I think I'll try that and see what happens. But even if that doesn't help, I guess I'll be OK with the driver package I'm using. What a headache. But at least this is the only problem I've had with SP2, so I guess I'm lucky.
  5. Well, I tried using nlite. I used it to remove display drivers, but nothing else -- I unchecked every other option. After it finished, I ran my installation again. Now I'm getting an error at the T-15 mark: "Windows cannot load the Internet Configuration Library (ICFGNT.DLL)." This was a fresh SP2 slipstream using nlite. Up until the removal of the display drivers, it had been working fine (save for the driver problem, of course). Now what do I do?
  6. I've learned that Windows is using these two files as drivers: nv4_mini.sys nv4_disp.dll And I found those two files inside of SP2.CAB. I'm sure that deleting SP2.CAB is a bad idea, but what about deleting those two files from inside of it? And if so, how do I repack the rest of the files as a CAB file? Do I just ZIP them and rename SP2.ZIP to SP2.CAB? Is it that simple, or do I need a special utility to compress a bunch of files into a CAB? I'd rather do it this way instead of nlite, because that screwed me up somehow.
  7. I'm already using that tweak. But I end up with both a "Links" sub-folder, and a "Favorites" sub-folder. The Links never comes back after deleting it, but the Favorites one keeps comig back.
  8. That reg tweak to delete the "Links" folder (under Favorites) and keep it from coming back -- it works great. But in Favorites, I also get a sub-folder called "Favorites". No matter how many times I delete it, it keeps coming back. Is there a similar trick to make it go away? FWIW -- it also creates a little button next to the "Go" button. When I delete the "Favorites" sub-folder, the button goes away. But then they both come back.
  9. I'm not sure. My whole setup started with using someone else's as a template, and I guess those lines were on there. I think those lines are needed for high resolution settings, like the ones I'm using, to keep Windows from reverting back (or something like that).
  10. I'm always nervous about removing files like that, but I'll do it if I have to. But with the "DriverSigningPolicy=Ignore", isn't that supposed to force Windows to use the drivers I tell it?
  11. You should make sure to change to 1.03. Apparently there was an important security hole fixed with version 1.03. At least that's the case with the Personal version.
  12. You have to adjust the English names to the German ones. and there is also a folder in startmenu! I can remove the link also, but not the folder! Try something like this: del "c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\FOLDER NAME"\*.* /q /s rmdir "c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\FOLDER NAME" /q /s
  13. Ever since slipstreaming SP2, my video drivers aren't installing, and I'm left with the default Windows ones. First of all, I know that the driver is good, and that the path is right, because it installed before. If I try to update the driver from the Device Manager, I get the following warning: If I click past it, the driver installs fine. So I'm assuming that this is why it's not working via my winnt.sif. Am I missing something in there, or is there something else I need to do? winnt.sif ;SetupMgrTag [Data] AutoPartition=1 MsDosInitiated="0" UnattendedInstall="Yes" AutomaticUpdates="yes" [Unattended] UnattendSwitch="yes" UnattendMode=FullUnattended OemSkipEula=Yes OemPreinstall=Yes TargetPath=\WINNT Hibernation=no FileSystem=ConvertNTFS ExtendOEMPartition=1 DriverSigningPolicy=Ignore OEMPnPDriversPath="WINNT\Drivers\GX270\1Chipset\INF;WINNT\Drivers\GX270\2Network\Pro1000\WinXP;WINNT\Drivers\GX270\3Video\GeFor64;WINNT\Drivers\GX270\4Audio\ADI198x\SMAXWDM\W2K_XP;WINNT\Drivers\GX270\5Monitor\1901FP" [WindowsFirewall] Profiles=WindowsFirewall.TurnOffFirewall [WindowsFirewall.TurnOffFirewall] Mode=0 [IEPopupBlocker] AllowedSites=www.ebay.com [GuiUnattended] AdminPassword=XXXXX EncryptedAdminPassword=NO AutoLogon=Yes AutoLogonCount=1 OEMSkipRegional=1 TimeZone=35 OemSkipWelcome=1 [UserData] ProductID=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX FullName=XXXXX OrgName=XXXXX ComputerName=XXXXX [Display] BitsPerPel=16 Xresolution=1280 YResolution=1024 Vrefresh=60 AutoConfirm=1 ConfigureAtLogon=1 [Components] msnexplr=off msmsgs=off Freecell=off Hearts=off Minesweeper=off Pinball=off Solitaire=off Spider=off ZoneGames=off [TapiLocation] CountryCode=1 AreaCode=717 [FavoritesEx] Title1=XXXXX URL1=XXXXX [Branding] BrandIEUsingUnattended="Yes" [SetupMgr] DistFolder=c:\winxp\I386 DistShare=winxp$ [Identification] JoinWorkgroup=XXXXX [Networking] InstallDefaultComponents=No [NetAdapters] Adapter1=params.Adapter1 [params.Adapter1] INFID=* [NetClients] MS_MSClient=params.MS_MSClient [NetServices] MS_SERVER=params.MS_SERVER [NetProtocols] MS_TCPIP=params.MS_TCPIP [params.MS_TCPIP] DNS=No DNSSuffixSearchOrder=XXXXX UseDomainNameDevolution=No EnableLMHosts=Yes AdapterSections=params.MS_TCPIP.Adapter1 [params.MS_TCPIP.Adapter1] SpecificTo=Adapter1 DHCP=No IPAddress=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX SubnetMask=255.255.255.0 DefaultGateway=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX DNSServerSearchOrder=XXXXX WINS=Yes WinsServerList=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX NetBIOSOptions=0 [GuiRunOnce] %systemdrive%\post.bat
  14. Un-friggin-believable. I got the high DPI and the large fonts to work in my unattended install. Great. But now it is screwing up a web application we use! It is thing thing called Corprasoft Legal Desktop. I doubt anyone here has ever heard of it, but check this out. At normal DPI, a particular pop-up window looks like this: At 120 DPI, it looks like this: As you can see, some of the buttons get cut off at the bottom. Changing the Web code is not an option, so I have to work around it. I've tried playing with the Windows font settings, Internet Explorer's font settings, and even the HR reg tweak for IE: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] "UseHR"=dword:00000001 It seems like the only way to fix it is to use the normal 96 DPI; but then everything onscreen is too small! Arrgghh! Is there anything else I can do?
  15. WRT my posts above about large fonts -- I finally got it all to work. It was a 3-pronged attack. First of all, I added the following to my tweaks.reg: tweaks.reg ;-----Set up large fonts for all users upon first logon----- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce] "lgfonts"="c:\\WINNT\\lgfonts.bat" Then I created a simple batch file called lgfonts.bat and placed it in the WINNT folder (i.e. "$oem$\$$") : lgfonts.bat @echo off regedit /s C:\WINNT\lgfonts.reg :end Third, I created a registry file in WINNT called lgfonts.reg with all of those reg tweaks that set large fonts (I also threw in the "large mouse pointer" tweaks. It's a lot of code, so see the attachment. The end result is that when a new user logs on, the batch file runs for about a 1/2 second. After that, a simple logoff and logon, and the large fonts & large mouse pointer are set. For that user, the batch file never runs again, but it'll run once for any new user. I don't know if the HKCU\RunOnce key could run a reg file, so I though it was safer to do it this way. Whew. B) lgfonts.reg
  16. Hmm... would it work to add a batch file to that HKCU/RunOnce key during the T-12 stage, so that the batch file would run once for every new user? If I was to try that -- what type of value is used in the RunOnce key? Is it a DWORD?
  17. Then simply apply after everything else. Like I do. I simply place a nice little shortcut on my desktop that I run after windows, appz, registry keys etc. are done. After I restart I run the shortcut. Which replyes all my registry settings and deleted unwanted shortcuts etc. Or you could just put it on run once. At least thats how I am doing it. But then it will only be applied to that account. I need it built into the default user account so it will work for every new user that logs on (over 100). Hmm, I wonder.... since I found out that it DOES work from the desktop via a batch file -- is there a way I can set up XP so that that batch file (sitting in the System32 folder or wherever) automatically runs one time when a new user logs on? But runs only once per user? I know that there's HKLM/RunOnce -- is there something similar in HKCU that could work?
  18. Anyone have any tips regarding my "Large Fonts" problem? (see my post above). This is driving me crazy -- applying those reg tweaks from the desktop works, but not from within my tweaks.reg file. Maybe it's because something happens after the tweaks.reg, and it gets reset? (video drivers, resolution, something). Or maybe there is a special trick with those "hex" tweaks. Please help!
  19. With our new LCD monitors here, everything at the high resolution is small, so I need to keep changing stuff. Now it's Outlook... Is there any way to change the default font view for all of Outlook XP? Not the font used for a new message; I mean the folder list, and the view in the pane to the right of the folder list. For a particular folder, like Inbox, I can go to View > Current View > Customize Current View. And from there I can go to Other Settings and change the font size used for that folder's view. OK, but is there some way to apply that to ALL folders and views within Outlook? By default, I want everything in Outlook to be font size 9 or 10, not 8.
  20. Thanks for the reply, crahak. As long as the XP CD-burning service won't cause any real problems, I'd like to keep it. It is limited, but it is simple and cut-and-dry, so some of my users might want to use it instead of Roxio. Anyone else have any tips regarding ASPI? Like I said, aspichk.exe tells me that all four components are not installed, but does that even matter?
  21. I decided to delete it via an autoit script. C: should only have three folders when it's done -- Documents and Settings, Program Files, and WINNT. So the following autoit script opens up explorer, scrolls down to that stupid Ý folder, and deletes it. I consider it safe, because for those random times when the Ý folder is NOT created, it simply delets the next item down, which is my clean.bat file (it has already run, so it's not needed anyway). ; --- Start --- Run("C:\WINNT\explorer.exe /n,/e,/select,c:") Sleep(5000) Send("{ENTER}") Sleep(500) Send("{DOWN}") Sleep(500) Send("{DOWN}") Sleep(500) Send("{DOWN}") Sleep(500) Send("{DELETE}") ; --- End ---
  22. If you use a large LCD monitor with high resolution, here is how to set DPI to 120 (125%). It's a lot, but it works, and thankfully they are all HKLM keys! ;-----Set DPI to 120----- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts] "Courier 10,12,15 (8514a res)"="COURF.FON" "MS Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24 (8514a res)"="SERIFF.FON" "MS Sans Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24 (8514a res)"="SSERIFF.FON" "Small Fonts (8514a res)"="SMALLF.FON" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontDPI] "LogPixels"=dword:00000078 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\GRE_Initialize] "FIXEDFON.FON"="8514fix.fon" "FONTS.FON"="8514sys.fon" "OEMFONT.FON"="8514oem.fon" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Video\{B89DC00C-8430-48DE-9C19-62700832B904}\0000] "NvCplLocate"=hex:00,00,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Hardware Profiles\0001\Software\Fonts] "FIXEDFON.FON"="8514fix.fon" "FONTS.FON"="8514sys.fon" "OEMFONT.FON"="8514oem.fon" "LogPixels"=dword:00000078 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Hardware Profiles\Current\Software\Fonts] "FIXEDFON.FON"="8514fix.fon" "FONTS.FON"="8514sys.fon" "OEMFONT.FON"="8514oem.fon" "LogPixels"=dword:00000078 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{B89DC00C-8430-48DE-9C19-62700832B904}\0000] "NvCplLocate"=hex:00,00,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\0001\Software\Fonts] "FIXEDFON.FON"="8514fix.fon" "FONTS.FON"="8514sys.fon" "OEMFONT.FON"="8514oem.fon" "LogPixels"=dword:00000078 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\Current\Software\Fonts] "FIXEDFON.FON"="8514fix.fon" "FONTS.FON"="8514sys.fon" "OEMFONT.FON"="8514oem.fon" "LogPixels"=dword:00000078 I just wish I could get "large fonts" to lock in. Anyone have any tips? If I apply the following reg edits (too much to list, so see attachment) at T-12, it doesn't stick. Applying it afterward from the desktop works, but then it doesn't apply to all users. The same goes for "large mouse pointer" -- doesn't work during install, but DOES work afterwards. Maybe it's because of those hex keys... large_fonts_and_mouse.txt

But if I run it later, after I'm logged on, it works, and the fonts are changed to large. Why isn't the change being made at T-12, which is where I really need it... ? .
