  1. Update...I realized I downloaded and burnt the wrong version of Windows 10. The first time I went there, I did not see there was a drop down menu to choose Home, Pro etc. I will now download the HOME version and try again. Thanks, Mike
  2. I originally had Windows 10 Home installed on my test computer, but there must have been a lot of garbage there, because the space used was over 40 Gig even after cleanup of system files. I had made a DVD with Windows 10 on it previously, so I loaded it into the DVD reader, chose Custom install, and Formatted the "C" Drive. Everything went well with the install, however I now have Windows 10 Pro, and it shows NOT ACTIVATED. How did that happen, and how can I fix it ? Thanks, Mike
  3. Update. I did a System Restore back to August 5th. Now it is finding, downloading, and installing the 8 updates it found. So that is good. However I now noticed that some of the items I have on the desktop do not open. Such as Money, weather, News, Maps etc. Settings, Control Panel, and Cortana DO open. Going to bed now. Will try again tomorrow. Mike
  4. I downloaded and installed KB 3073930, (I think), that update that lets you decide what updates to get or something like that. I say (I Think) because I do not see that item in Program and Features. Not sure I chose the right options when I downloaded KB 3073930. Anyway I went to Settings, Updates etc. It found three updates. Cumulative Update for Windows 10 KB 3081436, Windows malicious Removal Tool KB 890830, and Security update for IE Flash Player for Windows 10 KB 3087916. Nothing happens. It says it is downloading, but that was a half hour ago, and I do not believe anything is happening. Suggestions, please. Mike
  5. NoelC...Not really at this point. Seams about the same to me. Still learning the different things about Edge versus IE. I liked the fact I could open Outlook easily when I had IE open, because I had an Mail icon at the top of IE. I do not see that option in Edge. There seems to be more clicks needed to print, also in Edge versus IE. Even when setting the Homepage. You just had to go there, open up Internet options, and choose Use Current. But as I said , still learning. Mike
  6. I tried it again without the WWW. It now works, but I believe I was always trying that without the WWW. I just listed it that way in my post to MSFN. I will advise if it stops working again. By the way, that Homepage still works on my main computer with Windows 8.1 Thanks, Mike
  7. Tripredacus--I do not know what you mean by LOCAL ADDRESS. I have had this Homepage for several years and I like it. The address is www.dollypartonentertainment.com/story
  8. I can set many different webpages as my HOME page (not at once) except one. When I set it up according to directions, and then start Edge, I get a message that says "Humm, can't seem to access that page" But if I type that page in up top, the page opens as usual. Have tried this several times with the same message. Any suggestions ? Thanks, Mike
  9. Success !!!! I reimaged the computer back to Windows 7, using the 25 digit key on the bottom of the computer. Windows 7 showed ACTIVATED. I then got over 200 updates, which I guess was a waste of time. Anyway, I then followed the link from Gabe Aul to get Windows. All went well. My copy of Windows 10 now shows ACTIVATD. I do not know if I will now do the clean install or not. Because the computer was basically cleaned when I installed Windows 7. Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. Mike
  10. I was on the phone with Microsoft over an hour last evening. They originally told me that the numbers in my computer were NOT genuine, but verified the 25 digit number on the back of the Dell laptop as a legit Windows 7 OEM number. Then she told me that her boss said I need to go back to Dell, that they would help since it was an OEM install on Windows. I then asked her "Do you mean that eveyrone who bought a computer with Windows 7 on it, has to go back to the manufacturer ?? She replied "That is what the boss said" So I hung up. I will do a complete re-install back to its factory condition and then wait to see what happens. She also had no answer to "why was I accepted in the insider group in the first place" Not a happy camper.
  11. HI, Can you share the telephone number to contact Microsoft ? I have been trying to force the activation by using "slmgr.vbs/ato at the command prompt, but I keep getting the message that my "product key is blocked". Thanks, Mike
  12. dencorso...thanks for the reply. Yes, I did read that post, but since I was getting an error message that my number was being blocked, I thought there was another problem. So, I will just wait.
  13. Update...I read on this site how to ACTIVATE if you are having problems, by CMD.EXE and then SLMGR.VBS/ATO however when I do that I get error 0X004C003, the activation server determined that the specified product key is blocked. Now what ??
  14. I have been a member of the INSIDER GROUP, for several months, and have been downloading and installing all the pre-releases of Windows 10 including the last one #10240. All was fine. The past two days I have been checking my UPDATES to get the FINAL version of Windows 10. Nothing but Windows Defender updates, so I followed a link from Gabe Abul to get the download. It downloaded and installed, but tells me that it is not activated. The computer originally had Windows 7 Home Prem, and I had to replace the motherboard about 10 months ago, but I do not think that is the problem since I was a member of the insider group etc. and was getting all the other pre-releases. Any suggestions ? Thanks, Mike
  15. dencorso...Thanks for the reply. I guess I need to create a Win PE disc. to boot to.
  16. Lets say that your computer is really messed up with malware and viruses, but you have been making monthly backups of your entire computer to an external hard drive. Lets assume you can make it to the desktop and use the RESTORE function of Paragon Backup and Restore for example. Will doing the restore clean the computer, or will it still be infected ? Thanks, Mike
  17. kaljukass...Thanks for the reply. OK, so if Windows 10 has a Volume of 4 Gig, what would that equal after installation...about. 5 Gig, 10 Gig, 15 Gig ?? Thanks, Mike
  18. I have a test computer that had Windows 7 on it. I am using it to get all the Windows 10 downloads, because I do not want to mess up my main computer. Anyway, over 30 Gig of space is taken up so far, and all I have on it is Windows 10, and Office 2016 (Trial). I did the disc cleanups and even removed all prior installations of Windows 10, but there is still over 30 Gig of space used up. I know if I install 10162 from an ISO file, I will get the chance to do a clean install. I even tried that with another release of Windows 10, but I do not believe it removes everything. Anyway, this is my question. Can I completely wipe my hard drive with another program called Wipe Drive Pro, and then install Windows 10 #10162 from a ISO file, or will it look for a valid operating system like Windows 7 or 8. 8.1 Windows 10 should only take about 4 Gig of space, not nearly 30 Gig. Thanks, Mike
  19. Update----I pulled the charger plug from the computer, and let it discharge down to 90%. Then I plugged the cord back in, and it charged to 100%. So all is good. Not sure if it was Windows 10, (I doubt it), but all is good now. Mike
  20. I just downloaded and installed Windows 10 build #10158 to my test computer. All went well as far as I can tell. However when I place the mouse over the battery icon down on the taskbar, I get this popup "96% available, plugged in, (not charging)" I doubt Windows 10 has anything to do with this, but before I contact the person that I bought the battery from, I just wanted to make sure. The battery is about 6 months old. It is for Dell Inspiron. There is a light on the charging unit, that is glowing green. That usually means it is charging ?? I never noticed this before. Is there a way to check to see if the charger is really working , or could build 10158 caused this ?? Thanks, Mike
  21. NoelC---Thanks for the detailed info. I printed off this post and will make those adjustments to both our computers. Thanks again, Mike
  22. Thanks NoelC for the reply. I agree those messages about "IE has stopped working" have become less frequent, but I still get the message now and then. I do try to eliminate all add ons, but if you have the time to give more specific examples, I would appreciate it. I will be away for the next three days, so there is no hurry. Thanks again, Mike
  23. I read that it is designed from the ground up, and should be better and faster that Internet Explorer. Hopefully we stop getting those message that IE has stopped working etc.
  24. Is there a way to get the Menu bar back for Project Spartan ? Thanks, Mike
