  1. I'm trying to install the Java 6.0 update 7 on my Vista Home Premium and I get the same error every time. Error 1101.Error reading from file: http://javadl-esd.sun.com/update/1.6.0/sp-...0_07/sp1033.MST. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. I've tried running as administrator, I've tried running in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2. Instructions are given for this error code on the Sun Java help pages, but they refer to other versions of Windows -- not Vista. They gave some instructions which I went ahead and followed anyway -- didn't work -- instructions stated if you still can't install to download and reinstall the Windows Installer Package. They gave a link and I went there but again, that installer package was for other versions of Windows. How do I know if my Windows Installer is working? I had just uninstalled the Adobe Flash Player and then reinstalled the newest version and that worked. Any help would be appreciated. thank you
  2. I'm sorry but I'm really green and don't have a clue what you are talking about. However, my problem has been solved. My system became so unstable that I reinstalled my OS this past Sunday. Then I purchased BitDefender Internet Security 2008. I really like it so I hope you aren't going to tell me it's no good. Thanks! Sophy
  3. When I click on Virus Chest it opens with the following: Initialization of Chest files Action was completed with errors! Errors Report: Program cannot use Chest client: (null) --->Description: Access is denied Detailed Information: Initialization of Chest files ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Program will try to load all Chest files from the following server: (null) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Action was completed with errors! So if I put something in the Virus Chest I'm not going to be able to get to it. Can anyone offer any help on this? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. The funny part is, two days ago I could open it. VRDB: I selected it to run only when screen saver is running and then left my computer on and went to bed. Got up late today and it still says that this has not been done yet. I changed it to run when computer is idle. I notice it appears to be running on and off now, but it's been doing that now for 1-1/2 hours. Vista Home Premium; Windows Firewall; Spyware Doctor Previously had paid version of AVG Anti virus with Firewall 7.5; updated to 8.0; been in a mess ever since. Nikilet
  4. Actually, I'm a little leery about Zone Alarm. I did an extensive search on information about firewalls and I read through so much I can't remember specifics about Zone Alarm right now, but there were many comments that it used to be a good firewall but many no longer recommend it. Sygate was recommended but I think this is now owned by Norton isn't it? I used to have Norton and it slowed my system down so badly and then I had a terrible time getting rid of it so I'm a little gun shy of anything to do with Norton. Some have recommended Online Armor, but one person said the version offered for Vista right now is beta and to wait a month or so before they come out with the firm version and I wouldn't be sorry. Do you have any opinions to share on this Online Armor?
  5. Vista Home Premium -- Avast -- SpySweeper I'd welcome information about firewalls because right now I'm using Windows Firewall and I just don't feel confident or safe with it. I had the paid version of AVG 7.5 -- worked great -- updated to their 8.0 and nothing but problems. I tried Comodo Pro (free) and that is way to complicated for my knowledge and experience. I tried Webroot Desktop Firewall (free) and thought it looked like I was going to like it and be able to deal with it. After installing it my computer has been down for the past 6 or 7 days -- until tonight. I thought for sure it had bit the dust. I don't know what went wrong but now I'm afraid of it. I was looking tonight at PC Tools Firewall Plus. Any opinions out there on it? It's got to be something simple that doesn't require so much interaction from me -- like Comodo. That was an awful experience and I ended up with a virus. I'd appreciate input on the subject. Thanks, Nikilet
  6. I installed Webroot's desktop firewall. Seemed to go without a hitch. I did turn of Windows firewall and also my Avast and SpySweeper before installing the firewall. Then I went into my email program and couldn't send anything. It wasn't recognizing my POP server or some such thing. I figured it had something to do with the firewall so I decided to uninstall it until I could talk to Webroot. That also seemed to go ok. Then I reactivated my Windows firewall. I went to go back into my email and couldn't even open the account. I couldn't open a simple folder on my desktop, or even my start button. I had to force a shutdown, restarted in safe mode and did a system restore (which I've done three times now). My computer boots normally but my SpySweeper, Avast and RoboForm doesn't load and again, I can't open anything. I seem to be able to do everything in safe mode, except run my security programs. Does anyone have suggestions? Please and thank you, Nikilet
  7. Since writing this I got AVG uninstalled using The Uninstaller, I got Avast downloaded and also Comodo Firewall and I'm back to using Spy Sweeper. The downloading part is still real slow and now I have a new problem. I get many "Page can't be found" on the Internet and I'm getting the error "connection to the server was reset." There is some kind of little bug in that Uninstaller program and it asks if I want to report it to the company. I click yes and it goes out but then I find a notice in my email that reads: <bugreport500@ursoftware.com>: host ursoftware.com[209.68.36.53] said: 554 <bugreport500@ursoftware.com>: Recipient address rejected: Access denied (in reply to RCPT TO command) I've searched online and read a lot of stuff I don't understand. There were many comments about it being a problem with server settings. Is that something I can check out or is that to do with my ISP directly? See how dumb I am! Any advice would be appreciated. Cindy
  8. I hope someone can help me because right now I don't have any anti virus on my computer at all. It all started when I upgraded to AVG Anti-virus and Firewall 8.0. I had been running 7.5 for quite a long time with no problem. I have the paid versions of both Spyware Doctor and Spy Sweeper, although I only run one at a time. After upgrading to AVG 8.0 I disabled Spy Sweeper as their FAQ's say it's not compatible. And I started running Spyware Doctor. I was having various problems with AVG 8.0 opening and various things being in error state. I thought I had it pretty well straightened out and when I booted my computer tonight Spyware Doctor was all messed up so I had to quit using that and go back to Spy Sweeper. Anyway, I can't seem to get AVG off my computer completely, and the worst problem is that all of a sudden when I try to download something it's slower than molasses in January -- whereas before it was super fast. Right now I'm trying to download the free version of Avast, which is only 23.1 MB. Before tonight that would have downloaded in 30 seconds or less. Right now it's at 46% and it's been running for 10 minutes. Oh, and another thing, AVG won't even start. It isn't in my tool bar. I went into the program file and tried to start if from there and I get a sign that says TODO isn't working, or some such thing. I was going to try to redownload AVG and then uninstall, but it's like 66 MB and at the rate my computer is now downloading files it will take all night and then might not work the way things are going. My web site pages and such open fairly fast; it just seems to be the downloading deal and I think this has something to do with AVG because my daughter has been having the same problems ever since she updated to the 8.0. Her's started right away and mine just started tonight. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium. I have 2GB Ram. I called my ISP tonight. The guy had me to several things but couldn't seem to find anything. He had me to a ping test and there were 50 packets sent and 50 received. Since last Saturday I have sent 6 emails to AVG technical and haven't received one answer yet. Please, please, can someone help? And the sooner the better. Thanks, Nikilet Now I have a new development. I can't download Avast at all. When it gets right to the end I get an error message. It says: An unexpected error is preventing the operation. Make a note of this error code, which might be useful if you get additional help to resolve this problem. Error 0x800704C8. The requested operation can not be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open.

    DVD Drawer

I have two drives on my Dell XPS 410. The top drawer is the one I use for game CD's and such. I thought the other one always showed up in My Computer as DVD Drive, but it doesn't any longer. I put a CD in that DVD drawer last night to create a Bootable Rescue Media for my Acronis True Image 10 Home program. It ran and ran and I finally decided something must be wrong so I aborted and shut down. Tonight I went into My Computer to see if anything at all had recorded on that CD and that drive doesn't even show up and I can not eject the disk. Can anyone help me? Is there a place you can stick a paper clip or something to make the drawer open. I've looked and can't seem to find anything. Sophy
  10. I thought I had this licked and now it's happening again and I do not remember what I might have done the first time. Some pictures are not showing in emails. I have item: Block images and other external content UNCHECKED. Example: I get emails from the Paula Young website all the time about their specials. I just got one last night and it was fine. Tonight I got one, opened it and not a single picture showed. Nothing but red X's. Can anyone help with this? Thank you, Sophy

    RAM

When I ordered my new Dell computer (using Vista Home Premium), I paid extra to have 2 GB of RAM as the system only came with 1 GB. I did a scan with a program called "Crucial Scan" and it shows that I have a 1 GB card in one slot and a 512 MB card in the other slot. I wrote to Dell about this. Following is the explanation they gave me and I would like to know if their explanation is correct. It seems to me that no matter where the RAM is diverted, it should still show me having a 1 GB card in each slot -- but then I admit to knowing nothing when it comes to the technical side of things. So, here is what Dell wrote back and told me: "Your video card uses shared memory with your system instead having onboard memory on the card itself. So your system does have 2 gigs but 512 of that is being used for graphics card, this allows the graphics card to go directly to the memory and allows the graphics to run smoother and less choppy." Thanks, Sophy
  12. This does not happen with all pictures. Some come thru fine and some don't. I thought I discovered after writing this that after placing the e-mails in question in the trash, I could then go in there, open them and the picture appeared; could also use the "Save As" feature for the attachments mentioned. However, tried that today with an e-mail with the red X and it didn't work. Also tried opening an e-mail from before where this did work and now it doesn't work on that e-mail either. My AVG Anti-Virus w/Firewall has never caused this problem in the past and I've had it ever since I got the machine. I'm just not interested in using the Windows Live at this time. Right clicking on the picture does not give me an option to download. On the "Settings Configuration" I'm not sure where to go to check this out. I know it has something to do with the registry. Can you help direct me? I could find my way around Windows XP pretty well, but that is not the case in this Vista. Thanks Sophy
  13. Suddenly some of the pictures in e-mails in Windows Mail are showing up as a box with a red X. Tonight I hit the reply button to write back to a friend to see if she had her settings right, but when I clicked to send this reply it would not send. Another development is that I can't right click on some attachments and select "Save As" to save them to my desktop so I can scan before opening. I don't know what is going on. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium that came on the computer, 2GB RAM, use AVG Anti-Virus w/Firewall. I checked under Tools/Options/Security to make sure that "Block images ..." is not checked. I verified my Java and found that I needed an update so I downloaded that but it didn't help. Any suggestions?
  14. I have a piece of e-mail in my junk folder which I can't delete. I keep getting a message that "an unknown error has occurred." In reading some posts in this forum, someone suggested a Microsoft fix, which I downloaded and installed. That allowed me to delete an e-mail I've had in my inbox forever, but still can't delete this e-mail from my junk folder. Any help? Thanks Sophy
  15. I have a fairly new Dell XPS410 with Vista Home Premium. I have Windows Media Player 11. I received a WMA attachment from a family member and it won't play. The message I get is: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. I don't even know what is meant by codec. Can anyone help me? I wrote to Microsoft but no answer. The same family member also sent me a WMV file and it wouldn't play either; then after about 6 attempts it finally did and I didn't change anything or do anything. Thank you, Nikilet
  16. Thank you for your help. I never added those sites so don't know how they got there. Now, do you know what it means when perfectly safe e-mails are filtered into my junk folder and they have a red emblem-shaped icon beside them with a white X inside? The address of all e-mails involved are in my address book. Thank you, Sophy
  17. What does it mean when e-mails are filtered into the junk folder and they have a red emblem shaped icon beside them with a white X inside? Suddenly some e-mails from one friend are going into the junk folder. Not all, just some, and they are not necessarilly forwards. Some are just e-mails she's written me with no attachments or anything. Until recently, I've never had any trouble with her e-mails doing this. She has not changed her address and it is in my address book. However, other e-mails are doing this too. I belong to the World Start newsletter. Some of those letters come to my inbox and some go to the junk folder and this is the case with several other accounts. These are all in my address book so they should come through ok. Thank you, Sophy
  18. I have been doing business with a catalog site for a long time and get their promotional e-mails. I received one tonight and for the first time none of the pictures showed up. It's all boxes with the red X in them. I haven't changed anything that I'm aware of. Does anyone know why this might be happening all of a sudden when I've never had any problems before? Thanks, Sophy
  19. I don't know when I noticed this starting, but whenever I launch Internet Explorer (7) my home page opens, but there are two other tabs open too -- one is Yahoo Search and the other is Dell. I'm pretty sure it hasn't always done this. I guess it's not a huge problem but it's annoying and I don't know why it's doing this. Can anyone help? Thanks, Sophy
  20. Shawn: After I'd guess a dozen attempts to download the file to my dekstop and then install from there with no luck, I just ran the file right from the Kodak site and it downloaded with no problem. I was always told that was a no-no, but I did it out of desperation and it worked. Or at least I think it did. I have opened the software and everything seems to be in order but I have not actually tried to use it yet. I think I've been afraid to. Hopefully all will go well. Thank you for your reply. Sophy
  21. I was finally able to get this software installed, but now I am not getting the option to "start a new project from an EasyShare software album." Kodak says I need to have Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher. I have 1.1. Do I need to uninstall the 1.1 before installing the 2.0? Kodak also says I need Windows Installer 3.0. How do I tell which version I now have? I have searched and searched and can't find out where to do to find this information. I just got a new computer with Vista Home Premium on it. I hate it. Can't find anything. Can someone help me out with this? Thank you, Sophy
  22. I'm not sure I'm in the right forum. I just got a new Dell XPS 410 with Vista Home Premium and I'm getting a blue crash screen. This computer has been out of the box less than a week. I was on chat with a Dell tech who is supposed to specialize in this XPS system for over an hour the other night and quite honestly I didn't get the impression that he really knew what he was talking about. The only suggestion he could make was that I completely reinstall my OS on this brand new computer. I've had a lot of trouble installing programs. I got the blue crash screen a few times throughout those problems but finally got things installed and thought everything was ok. After a couple of days when things seemed to be working fine I tried to install the newest Kodak EasyShare Software which is said to be Vista compatible and really got into a mess. It would not let me install but the bottom line is I tried and then uninstalled and tried again quite a number of times. I made a final uninstall and used Kodak's CLEAR.exe and haven't tried again. Since this mess with Kodak, through my AVG firewall I frequently get this pop up about "Intel Remoting Service" trying to make a connection and if I click to allow this I go to the blue crash screen. If I deny the connection nothing happens and I can go on using my computer. But is this something I need to be allowing? I have an Intel® Core2 CPU 6320 @ 1.86 GHz (whatever all that means). I don't know how many times I asked that Dell technician what this is and if I should definitely be allowing it and never did get an answer. He's supposed to be a specialist for this particular system I don't think he knew the answer. Can anyone help me with this, and does anyone know why I can't seem to install this Kodak software? I disabled my anitvirus, firewall and spyware programs while trying to install. Then I did discover that this comptuter has Windows Defender on it which was running. I don't know if I should have, but I disabled that and I haven't tried again to install Kodak since disabling. I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thank you, Sophy
  23. My computer isn't here yet, but I got another Dell -- XPS 410. I did some researching online and this particular model of Dell was recommended on several independent rating sites. Also I have one of their preferred accounts so no interest if it's paid within 12 months. I didn't have any choice on operating system. I wanted XP. They have some models that you can still get XP with, but not this one. I have QuarkXPress 5.0 which I just love to use for importing photos for printing because it's so versatile -- it's just a great progam all around -- and the way it sounds I won't be able to use it with Vista. I also hate to lose my Outlook Express. I've heard they are having some trouble with that replacement program, Windows Mail. I'm usually up for a challenge but honestly, with all the computer problems I've had I'm really not looking forward to learning Vista. Especially since I remember reading something about having to set permissions for practically everything you do. After all the trouble I've already had with that it's not a pleasant thought. I am curious -- exactly why did you say you hoped I got XP instead of Vista. I sure hope I don't mess up the works right off the bat because I can't figure out how to use it. I'm 100 miles from the nearest computer store -- live in a little rural town. Thanks! Sophy
  24. It's not 100%, but I did start in safe mode and got things back to where I can copy. I guess it'll get me by until I get my new computer. Thanks for the advice on trying that IsoBuster. What a life saver! Sophy
  25. I'm back! I purchased IsoBuster. It was able to read the two CDs in question. I was so thrilled! I did notice that apparently both of these CDs were UFD. That was mentioned and I have no idea what it means. So, I extracted my Kodak pictures to my hard drive C. Then I thought I would burn them to a new CD-RW disc. I put a new CD-RW in my CD ROM drive/F. I drug the folder labeled Kodak Pictures from my hard drive to drive F and I got a sign that said F/is not accessible. Incorrect function. Further, now I am not even able to copy additional data to a CD-RW disc which I could copy to about a week ago. For instance, as I create new logins in my RoboForm program they are also in My Documents. I would put my CD-RW in drive F, go to My Documents and drag any new logins to the disc. It worked fine. Now it tells me Files on this CD-ROM drive are read only. You can not copy or move files over to this CD-ROM drive. So now what has changed that I can't do what I could a week ago? Sophy
