Let's confuse this issue further ... I typed that error code from the Chrome page into Google and just started going down the line and opening up each item and reading. I found something about checking to see if another person still had this problem when using Chrome incognito. So then I Googled how to use Chrome incognito. I did this and I was able to click open and read the posts. So that would seem to say that it's an add-on causing the problem, right? Only I have very few add-ons. The very last one I installed was XMarks. I also have XMarks on Firefox. But I do not have it on IE and I can't reach this site on IE either. Also, I don't have XMarks on that other computer I tried. Once again, nothing makes any sense. EXTRA!!! I think I may have stumbled on the cause. Another thing both of my computers have in common is LastPass. I can use any of my browsers in the private browsing mode wherein add-ons are disabled and can then open the posts in the forum and read them. However, I tried copying my password for this site from LastPass BEFORE putting the browser into private browsing, and then pasting it in the signin box in this forum so that I can start a new thread, and I still CAN NOT start a new post. Then I will get the dreaded page telling me: "Unable to load webpage because the server sent no data." I went to the LastPass forum last night when I stumbled upon this and see that I have received an email from the forum so I will go check that out.

I have made RESPeRATE aware of this; emailed the guy I was talking with before buying the machine. I have already waited 24 hours because this started yesterday mid-morning, when I first registered for and went to the forum. If it's resperate's fault, why were several people on the Avast forum able to go to the site and open the posts? And why was my ISP able to open the posts also? I called them thinking a possible problem with my wireless modem, but he said very unlikely (of course).

This problem is beyond strange. I use LastPass password manager. Works great and no trouble with it. I have over 200 logins in it. I have clicked on a great number of them over the past two days and no problems. I just purchased a medical device from RESPeRATE. I registered with the forum so I could interact with others who are using it. I can login just fine, I can click on the specific forum I want to be in and that opens, but when I try to click on a post that's been made, or to "Start a new topic" I am stopped cold. I have tried 4 browsers and tho the messages are different in each, the bottom line is it won't let me in. Please see the screenshots and note the error code given on the Chrome browser. I have tried to make the connection on a Gateway laptop I have which has Win XP on it. I tried Firefox and IE. Same result. What these two computers have in common is Avast Internet Security 7, and the wireless modem I connect through. I tried restarting in Safe Mode with networking. Same thing happened. I tried a clean boot and again, same result. I also took the chance of just shutting down all of the shields on Avast for 10 minutes while in normal mode and same result. I called my ISP, who is just certain it has nothing to do with them or their modem, naturally. I asked him if resetting the unit might help and he said it could and told me all I had to do was pull the plug from the back of the modem, wait 20 seconds and plug it back in. That didn't help either, but I thought when you did this you were supposed to completely disconnect both your computer and the modem from electricity, wait for several minutes and then plug first the computer and then the modem back in. Does anyone have any possible solution or has anyone out there ever heard of this before? Does that error message on the bottom of the Chrome page give any clues? I'm at my witt's end. My computer is running good and there is not another site with which I have had any problem. I just can't read a post or make one at this forum.resperate.com. I have had several people in Avast tell me they went and opened these posts with no problem, and also the ISP guy I talked to. I used that site called "Down For Everyone Or Just Me?" and it said it's just me.

Again, thanks to everyone. I've been sharing your advice with her.

Thank you so very much. This would definitely be a keeper. And she and the oldest son (6 yrs.) do light gaming; games found on Shockwave as she has a paid membership. I really appreciate this input.

My daughter has decided to get a new laptop. Her computer is 5 years old and she doesn't want to start putting a bunch of money into it for parts, etc. Would you mind telling me what you think of this computer at Walmart. Especially want to know if this AMD processor is any good. Acer 17.3" Aspire AS7250-0209 Laptop PC with AMD E-450 Dual-Core Processor and Windows 7 Home Premium with Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Option The link is: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-17.3-Aspire-AS7250-0209-Laptop-PC-with-AMD-E-450-Dual-Core-Processor-and-Windows-7-Home-Premium-with-Windows-8-Pro-Upgrade-Option/19977357 Maybe this is asking a lot but I would really appreciate it. The guy directed her to an Acer at Walmart that is on sale, but it has only a 14" screen and I don't know if she would be satisfied with such a small screen.

I think the part about the MBR has to do with the fact that he has been unable to get the Recovery CD (or whatever you call it) to run. Please understand that my daughter is trying to tell me things she can remember of what he said. I am no computer tech and she is even less so. Perhaps I should not even be trying to document what is going on here. But to answer your question, YES, he does know what is going on. I can say without any hesitation that this is fact. He is still trying to research what is going on because, as he told her againr, in all his years of working on computers, he has never seen anything quite like this. He is trying to help her to reinstall her OS through the Recovery CD. Since I posted here last it seems it finally started to run and even as my daughter was calling me to report this good news, the screen went black so she was going to call him again. If something doesn't sound right, put the blame on me and/or my daughter because if anyone can get a computer running right -- find the problems and fix them -- it is this guy -- and also the woman who works with him.

UPDATE: The outfit that is working with my daughter through a remote session has been on the job since 8:30 this morning and they are still working with her (it is 11:30 now). They did get the computer to shut down a few times but now it's back to not wanting to. The guy told her he's never seen anything quite like this. He thinks it might be something in the Master Boot Record; said something about thinking it might be set to 2 instead of one. He told her to see if she could get it to boot in safe mode like she did before while he does more research. By the way, she did find the Windows CD that came with her computer, but guess that doesn't even want to work. Will let you know how things go. If anyone has suggesions about this seemingly strange problem based on what I've written, please post and I can let her know.

Thanks for the extra info!!!

Thanks for your contribution to this. Sorry, but I don't know what OT stands for. Did XP include a recovery option on the disk? I know I have that in Vista and have used it, but I didn't know if XP had it. If it isn't necessary, she really doesn't want to have to do anything that will wipe all of her programs and everything. I think at this point as long as she has called the people for the remote session we will stand back and see what they come up with. Who knows ... ? It might be a hardware problem after all. I will report back to this post when I have any information to share.
-
I thought about that. I have one for my machine. I didn't know if you could use that for purposes like this. I know that one time I was trying to do something that asked for the disk to be inserted and I'm sure I inserted my recovery disk and that didn't work. In any event, I will ask her about this and see if she can locate hers. She could insert it and then try to run the sfc /scannow and see if it works. Thanks for reminding me.

Thanks allen2 for that link to actually download this CD. I will keep this on file (for myself too). I talked with my daughter a few minutes ago. She has been using her computer and says it is operating really well and she is trying (between kids and work) to get all of her things backed up to CDs. She has called the option I mentioned and will be setting up a remote session with them. If it is something with the OS or some program I feel confident they will find it and be able to fix it, so now I guess it's just to wait and see what happens. You, all of you here, have been so gracious and helpful and I appreciate it. I will let you know what develops with this.

Maybe there is something I am not understanding correctly. She does not have a Windows Installation disk. Her OS would be OEM. That SystemRescue CD sounds like a good option, but I am afraid it might be beyond either of us. I went to that link and not sure I understood it. Is there supposed to be something on that page that can be downloaded and burned to a CD? I did read under the Downloading and Burning, but I still don't know how/where I get this ISO file.

We tried to run the sfc /scannow last night but it wouldn't complete because it asked for a disk, which she does not have. We scheduled the Error Checking task with only the "Automatically fix file system errors" checked. So after we had talked she tried restarting and the Error Checking task started. She said the screen showed quite a number of items which stated that much clutter/space could be freed up. It said the scan was complete and to wait for her computer to restart. The computer would not start. She would unplug it and then plug it back in and the disk check would attempt to run again, even after she aborted it. She finally remembered what I had said about pressing the F8 key and using "Last good configuration" so she did that and then the computer started normally. She is not going to attempt any shut downs or restarts until she gets all her pictures and such backed up. She did say that since this all has started, after she unplugs the computer and then plugs it back in, the fan runs real loud like it wants to start but it won't. I had a power supply go bad on a computer several years ago and the power light didn't light up and there were no sound of fans running. Thanks for listening, and if you, or anyone else looking at this, can think of anything else which might be causing a problem that we could check out, please share it. Right now she's thinking purchasing a remote session with someone I know of who is excellent, but her finances are limited so I suppose she really doesn't want to have to buy a power supply just for testing purposes -- and really doesn't want to purchase a remote session only to find out it's a power supply. She said her computer runs really well and there have been no problems. It's just the shutdown and startup that are the problem. She ran a scan again this morning with Avast before going to work, and ran another one with Malwarebytes and again, they both showed no problems. This is an EMacine.

I'm trying to help my daughter with her computer. She hasn't had it shut off for quite a while. But in the past few days she said if she tries to shut down, or restart, the screen will go black but the power light on her tower stays lit. The only way she can bring it back is to pull the power plug, and then plug it back in. Does this sound like a power supply problem? Would the light on her tower stay on if it were power supply? She said she ran full scans today with Avast Internet Security 7, and also with Malwarebytes Pro and there were no infections found. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't use IE. I use Firefox and the preferred Language is English. It was working fine. I've never run into this before, ever, and suddenly my Microsoft pages want to display in German. I haven't found any other pages this way -- only Microsoft pages.
-
Some Microsoft web pages that I do a Google search for are showing up in German. I found this out when I clicked on a link that was supposed to take me to a FixIt page for disabling the Windows Sidebar and Gadgets. Then I Googled the main Microsoft FixIt page and suddenly it's all in German. Can someone please tell me what's going on here?

Thanks. I might as well give this a try. I will report back. You know, my computer is really running great, but I went into my Event Viewer a couple days ago. I don't spend much time there because I don't understand most of it anyway. But I was reading a newsletter and was trying to check out something they were talking about. I discovered something. When I have gone into the Event Viewer and found something I've often clicked on the bottom of the box where it says: More Information: Event log online help. This link no longer takes me to the proper page online. Instead I get a little box that tells me Can't find script engine "VBScript" for script and then it will go on to give the description -- like -- C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local|Temp........... Each decription will be different according to whatever warning or error I click on. There was some kind of WIA error so I went to services to check it out and got another window. I have attached this one, and a couple of the VBScript error windows. Can anyone tell me what is going on?

My Windows Module Installer is set on Manual so that should be ok, shouldn't it? P.S. I went to services and started the service, then tried to run FixIt. Still wouldn't run. But I do thank you for your offering of a solution.
-
Thank you for your direction. I did run the FixIt "fix" you sent the link for. Then tried to install FixIt again and got the same error window as always. There is no error code given, but it always says there's an unexpected error and to close the setup and try it later. I used it once quite awhile ago to fix a printer problem and it worked great for that. The funny part is, I still have that in a folder on my desktop (MicrosoftFixIt.Printing.Run) and I can run that. So don't know why I can't now install the application.
-
I have given you all the information as truthfully as possible. What would be my point in lying to you? That Event Viewer is like so much Greek to me. There are a few "PerfLib" errors, some ASP.NET 4.0 errors. There are a couple of MsInstaller errors and it says. See screenshot.

I used Microsoft Fix It Solution Center a couple of days ago and it worked. I also have the Microsoft Fix It Center Online on my computer because I had used it ages ago for something. Now neither option will work. When I go to the Solution Center, after clicking on any one of the problem areas a "null" shows up in orange right after "What are you trying to do?". See screenshot. When I go down and fill in the "Filter Solutions" box, it shows a connection problem. See screenshot. When I try to install from my desktop I get an error box. See screenshot. The only thing I did prior to this happening was: I installed WeatherBug desktop and during installation it said the installer needed .NET Framework 4 so I gave permission for this to be installed. After that WeatherBug installed with no problem. But now I can't run the Fix It so is this .NET Framework 4 the problem, or what? I'd appreciate your help.
-
Probably around a year ago I had WeatherBug on my computer and then removed it. I am now wanting to put it back on. I downloaded the installer and when I tried to install I got a window stating that the WeatherBug installer requires VB scripting. I have attached a screenshot of that window. My computer is working perfectly -- no problems at all. I ran sfc /scannow and it found no integrity errors. I opened an elevated command prompt and typed in regsvr32 vbscript.dll and it stated this had been successful, but I still can't install WeatherBug. Can anyone help me with this? Is it possible this is some kind of glitch in WeatherBug itself and has nothing to do with my computer? I ask because in Googling I see there are quite a few entries but I didn't find any solutions other than the two things above -- or, at least no others that I could follow and understand.

Error message for all links clicked in Windows Mail
Sophy replied to Sophy's topic in Microsoft Office
Last evening I ran the sfc /scannow command and it found no integrity errors. Then I ran Error-checking-Check Disk OS with both options selected. I don't now if there was anything found there as the screen didn't stay up long enough for me to look through it. Usually after my computer sits for a while is when I'll come and sit down and this situation with the links in email occur. This morning it was find when I checked it out so maybe things got straightened out. I don't understand this comment: Some modems in the config page will allow a manual refresh of DHCP info. If it happens again perhaps I should check with my ISO, but I have a feeling they are going to tell me this is a Windows problem. If the problem recurrs I'll come back. In the meantime, thank you all. -

So is it possible for you to tell me how to do this manual DHCP refresh? I could just as well be trying to read a Greek novel here so bear with me.
