Well, it's got to be an Apache server, and they have to let you. Some hosting providers don't. -
Help, only able to login to a workgroup
Idontwantspam replied to Joides's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
Well, this may be a little bit late now, but just for the record: I installed XP MCE '05 in Virtual PC, and during setup, it asks if I want to join it to a domain. I said yes (I have a VM with Windows Server running AD), told it which domain, and it worked! I'll post screen shots when I get a chance. Some time I'll try the method outlined above and see how that works. -
Actually, you know what? You could probably find some place somewhere where they recycle computers where you could get some keyboards for next to nothing. Or post an ad somewhere asking if anyone has spare keyboards.
-
Sorry, guess I didn't clarify. I meant that WPA wouldn't let me log in if I didn't activate Windows.

Not really a complaint, just I thought it was kind of interesting. No question either. Yeah, SP3 is loooong over due. Why should I get VMware Server? I'm using MS VPC right now and it works fine for my needs.

I'm not talking about the standard drivers!!!!!!! Read: Those special buttons are on a Microsoft keyboard. With a special, seperate, not standard XP install, Microsoft driver that I linked to. Let me reiterate: MICROSOFT keyboard. MICROSOFT driver. That I downloaded separately. It says Microsoft right on the keyboard. So yeah, I can reinstall the drivers and all, but I just want to clarify that I'm not stupid, and that those are Microsoft drivers. This is what the control panel for the keyboard looks like. Note how it says Microsoft Intellitype Pro. (Pardon my being a hot-head , but I thought I had made it sufficiently clear... )

Well, I installed Windows XP MCE in a VM today, since I want to do some tinkering and don't want to screw up my computer. Since I needed internet for some of this, and since I had automatic updates on, it downloaded a lot of updates! Little did I know... when I went to shut down the VM, the "Install Updates and Shut down" option was there, so I decided to let those updates install. This is what I saw: Dang! 39 updates! That's a LOT. I guess that goes to show how many things they need to fix, since the CD hadn't been updated since SP2/Update Rollout 2. I'm sure there will be even more the next time I connect. Thing is, I didn't bother to activate, since I don't feel like paying just to tinker, and won't use the VM more than a month, so it's not even WGA legit, meaning all those updates are critical. Here's another totally unrelated thing. I was fooling with Vista in a VM, and pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del (OK, Right_Alt+Del) and guess what!!? With only 512mb of RAM, it had to give me a spinning wait symbol thing to bring up the security options! Wow, even the three-finger-salute has to wait and wait these days.

No, because it's a Microsoft keyboard, so those "third-party" drivers are actually Microsoft drivers. I downloaded the keyboard software from Microsoft directly. The extra buttons and stuff didn't work when I just plugged in the keyboard, so, I searched microsoft.com and found this, which is what allowed me to configure it. The software is called "IntelliType Pro", and I'm using version 6.1

That's so lame I actually laughed!

Welcome! ... I mean, !Bienvenido! Ummm, don't you mean hola, not holla, which you would pronounce hoya which is feminine hole, which doesn't exist? Yea, so Hi!

So, just the other day I got a Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard (one of these), and a load of other stuff (scanner, USB optical mouse, CD cases, some CAT-5, and lots more, for less than 30 bucks!!!!!). The keyboard came with no install CD, but I was able to download the driver from the M$ website. So anyhow, I got this keyboard for my laptop so that I could have a full-sized keyboard, and because I like all of the extra buttons and hotkeys. So, all was going fine until I tried to use some of the hot keys built in to the laptop keyboard, using the Fn key. Now, when I press Fn-F10, it no longer opens the CD drive, and Fn-F8 no longer seems to toggle the display settings, Fn-F3 doesn't open the battery meter. Fortunately, Fn-F2, the wireless on-off switch, does still work. Now this is even weirder: Fn-UP and Fn-DOWN still brighten or dim the display, but pressing Fn-DOWN will also simultaneously do whatever the Messenger button on the external keyboard is assigned to do. I've disabled that key as a solution, since I rarely use messenger, but it's still odd. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before, and if so, do they know a remedy, other than uninstalling the drivers, which i don't want to do?

It would not be very feasible to do that with javascript, and they could disable it anyway. You need to see if there is any way in your web hosting control panel to block IP addresses. -

I don't know about www.anonymouse.org, but I'll assume it hides their IP address. Couldn't you block www.anonymouse.org's IP address? Or his, if possible? -
What happens if you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete?

Group Policy for computer not in domain...
Idontwantspam replied to shadowman1's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Well, you could I suppose do some of things through group policy. What I would do is use registry-based policy for that individual user. -
Hmm. Well, you could make their folder in /documents and setting/%username% be private, but they could still be deleted. I don't know if that's possible or not. Maybe with AD, but not with a local computer I don't think.
-
So, in what way is it stuck? Does it actually crash, i.e. a bluescreen or just turning off, or does the mouse not move anymore or what? Does it just stop downloading? I'm not sure what you mean. I guess maybe you need the SATA drivers to be installed... I'm not sure.

Well, I agree with you about the RAM thing, and I've only tried it on lower-end machines in the RAM department. So I'll let you have that one. Well, yes and no. They kind of do if you employ some little registry hacks. I don't like FUS, and I don't like the way it's implemented in Vista, particularly what I said about locking the computer. There should at least be an option to use the regular interface or the older interface. And no-one did much of anything to winlogon, but they did stuff to GINA, which can cause problems (cough*novell client for windows*cough*and many others*cough*) Press C-A-D twice? I only ever have to press it once. And vista does actually let you require Ctrl-Alt-Del; take a look at the group policy. Good thing! FUS and Ctrl-Alt-Del can live together. Menus... I guess I rarely use them, now that I think about it, but I was very confused trying to find them. Whatever. Well, on the start menu thing, they could at least have the option. I did away with the six-lat-used-things deal and just set the # of icons to 0, set it to small icons, and put in my own permanent links. I like that. I don't like having the panel which changes instead of the menus spreading across the screen. It's easier to see all my programs when it does it the XP way. The Run thing is nice, true, but they could incorporate that into the XP-style menu. Exactly what I'm saying!!! It is too complex to get there - what's wrong with double-click on the icon, choose properties, and configure what I need to configure?! Now I get some network-thingamajig when double-clicking the icon. So, i guess it's up to personal taste.

You could set up a message rule to put anything from anyone in the address book in the inbox, and anything else in a spam folder. Tools > Message rules > Mail.

Virtual PC 2007 networking doesn't work
Idontwantspam replied to Idontwantspam's topic in Software Hangout
Sorry for the long delay. Well, I tried reinstalling, that didn't work, then I uninstalled and the installed the Virtual Networking service for my NIC, that didn't work either, then I reset the MAC address on every single machine, and now it's working. They can ping each other perfectly, and can use remote desktop, etc. I can't get the workstations to connect to the server's AD domain, but that's another problem that I think I may have solved. -
Make a presentation CD! Office Orb > Export > Export to CD. Yay! It needs to be converted to Office 2003 format. Then, it will ne saved to a disk with the viewer and any themes, etc.

Well, what did you do to make one? Let's work off of that. Oh, and what is your version of PPT?

Downgrading Media Edition to Windows XP Home
Idontwantspam replied to yarko75's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
True. I actually rarely even use the Media Center part, but I like the Pro features without the added price, and since I'm not on a domain, it doesn't matter. But there are instructions on the web for how to add MCE to a domain, though I've never tested it. You can add it to a domain during setup, too. -
What kinds of torrents would those be? Because if it's illegal stuff, then we can't help you. Also, is it a legal copy of XP? Well, give more info and we might be able to help.
