Never mind. I nuked all the associated files in the settings tab in Media Source. Now I'm prompted by XP on which application I'd like to use. Media Source thought it was the only app. on my computer. Kinda like a virus! Treeman

I know a lot of folks have an Audigy card installed, I do. I made the mistake of installing the Creative software that came with the ZS. I figured it would just be the equalizer, volume control, etc., like the old Soundblaster. My problem is the Creative software took over applications used in Nero 6 Ultra, Windows Media Player, and Power DVD. I can only use these apps now if I force them to function beforehand. The Creative Media Source is my biggest headache, and I can't find the configuration settings for this software. All that's listed in the Creative menu is: "Creative Restore Defaults," whatever that does! How can I get to the Creative's configuration screen so I can change things? (disable Creative media player for video) Thanks, Treeman

Update . . . Found out he had to clone his mac address (of his nic) on to the router. That was the only way his modem would let anything through the router. He can surf the internet, (2 comp.) download files, recieve email, but he can't send email! Timeouts when sending. Any clues why all the above would work except for outgoing mail? He promises that OE is configured properly. I imagine something in account properties was left unchecked or enabled. Sound familiar? Thanks, Treeman

Those are internal VB / Windows color codes. Someone here: Color Picker wrote an exe file so you can change the color of the skin. Maybe this is what you wanted? Treeman

SCSGoal31, First, check your mobo documentation to see what type of pin-out is on the board. Pin outs include 2x4, 2x8 and 2x9 Typically this is the wire arrangement by color code: 1 Red 5 Volt 2 White Data - 3 Green Data + 4 Black Ground Or you can go here for more info: Front USB Treeman

Thanks Sleepnmojo, Me thinks he has the router set to automatic, and it needs the dns server address punched in for configuration. I would go over and configure it for him but he lives miles away. His other problem is a lack of patience He will just click all over the place until something breaks! All I know is that after a new H. drive install, and a fresh install of XP Home; the computer worked fine before he took it home. Treeman

Shades, Sounds to me like this was an upgrade from ME or Win98 gone wrong. Is it within your knowledge base technically, to do a fresh install of XP? If not, can you get a friend to help you gather XP drivers for your hardware, change the boot order to CD in the bios, let the XP disk format your h. drive & install it'self? Your computer will run faster with a fresh install=less problems. If your still having problems, just post back and someone will be glad to help you out. Treeman

Try something from Microsoft! MSN® Messenger for Mac version 3.5 makes it easy to take advantage of the full power of instant messaging. By using MSN Messenger, you can see when your friends, family, and co-workers are online and then communicate with them instantly. MSN Messenger can also notify you when new messages arrive in your MSN® Hotmail® Inbox, if you have a Hotmail account, and provide the latest news and headlines from MSN. And perhaps best of all, it's free! Note: You may need to upgrade your Mac operating system before you install this MSN Messenger update. Get instructions Mactopia Treeman

Hello, a friend just got broadband, and going through a Linksys 4 port router he has problems with getting his e-mail & downloading files. He can surf the internet behind dchp w/out a problem. Could it be that his isp can "see" the router and wants more money for more hook-ups? The isp web site is pretty vauge about this subject, and blames his problems on Microsoft. Just wondering if any other Comcast users have the inside skinny. Thanks, Treeman

Scorpy, Here's an example of an alternate computer manufacturer that get's great reviews: Barebones Treeman

Scorpy, Is building your own, out of the question? If you want something rock solid and autonomous, "meaning you can upgrade anything you want," then build your own. Or have a local shop spec. out what you want and build it for you. Grab some computer mags, and check out their ratings for computer manufacturers you can order from. With Dells, Gateways & HP/Compaq you’re stuck with proprietary hardware, drivers and sometimes restore Cd's, or an imaged O.S. I can't tell you how many times I've heard; "I only want to surf the internet on this computer, but I want it to be cheap and fast!" There is no such thing as cheap & fast. You get what you pay for in the long run. Maybe folks buy out of simplicity, advertising, and price & branding, but do yourself a favor and look at the small print, especially about "shared video." Do more research and you'll be happier down the road. Disclamer: Dear Big Computer Manufacturers: The above statements are an opinion only, please don't take it seriously. Treeman

I believe you can find it in the XP CD \i386. Cheers, Treeman

Hi Shades, A little more info and we will have a better understanding of your experience. When you go to help, and try to open the web page, what is the destination address? Is your system an oem product, or one you built? Treeman

Here's what I found. I don't know which email program your using, so I included the info for both. Treeman To send an entire publication as an e-mail attachment When you send a Publisher publication as an e-mail attachment, the recipient must have Microsoft Publisher 2002 or later installed to view the publication. On the File menu, point to Send E-Mail, and click Send Publication as Attachment. In the message header, in the To and Cc fields, type or select e-mail addresses for the recipients. In the Subject field, add a title for the e-mail message. On the toolbar above the message header, choose any other options you want. Click Send. Error messages when sending a page as an e-mail message. If you installed Publisher by itself (not as part of an Office suite of applications) and you did not activate Outlook before attempting to send a page as an e-mail message, the Outlook Activation dialog box will appear when you click Send This Page as Message. After you activate Outlook, Publisher will display an error message stating that there is a problem with your connection and the envelope (message header) isn’t open. Click Ok and then choose Send This Page as Message again. The message header will now appear as expected. The Send This Page as Message and E-mail Preview commands do not appear, and there is no Send This Page as Message button on the Standard toolbar You need to set up Outlook 2003 or Outlook Express (version 5.0 or later) as your default e-mail program in order for these features to be available. To set up Outlook 2003 as your default e-mail program Start Outlook. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Other. Under General, select the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar check box. To set up Outlook Express as your default e-mail program Start Outlook Express. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the General tab. Under Default Messaging Program, next to This application is NOT the default Mail handler, click Make default.

Fuggedabouit, I just jerked the modem and all went well. No support for outdated equipment! Treeman

Just so you know, the impossable can be done! I jerked out the modem, which wasn't supported anymore, left the nic card in. I'll be darned . . . XP loaded eveything just fine. So there is hope when upgrading to XP after all! (even on a Gateway) Treeman

Hi All, This is a Gateway E-4600, ser#. 0023324747 that had Windows Meloonium installed. I'm going to try to update (clean install) this to XP Home this weekend. Belarc shows that this mobo also has an integrated Linksys LNE 100 TX fast ethernet adapter. So what's with the BCM HPNA nic on here too? I know Xp has lot's of generic drivers, just wondering if anyone has seen these two network adapters together? I can see the yellow ! next to the BCM item already, anyone know where to get XP compatable drivers for this item? Gateway doesn't show any. Thanks, Treeman

I don't know of a forum, but here's something from MS: Works Downloads WScal Error Treeman

Usually, this is attributed to the MAPISP32.EXE process not shutting down. Do you have any software installed that may be using this (or interfacing with Outlook) such as FAX software or PDA synchronization software, or spam busting software? Treeman

Webcam problem somebody help me pleeeeeeeeeeez
Treeman replied to wasay911's topic in Hardware Hangout
Wasay911, The problem is that your web-cam was made to use Win 98 drivers. I have one sitting in a box right now that is not compatable with XP, and no newer drivers or software was made for it. You can try DriverGuide.com Do a search, but me thinks you'll have to update to a web-cam that is XP compatable. Treeman -
Hmmm . . . . Do you have any games loaded that has that persons name in the gameplay? Or can you hear the voices with the computer shut off too? Treeman

Leon, How do you connect to the internet? Are you still having the problem? Did the install go o.k.? (normal) Treeman

Hi Briasa, I think it is what it is, as described below: Microsoft Windows XP Setup has detected an Iomega Zip drive connected to the parallel port on your computer. Some installed tools for the Iomega Zip drive will not work properly after upgrading to Windows XP if your Iomega Zip drive is connected to the parallel port on your computer. So let's see if Iomega has the tools that are compatable with a parallel drive for XP. You can start here:Zip 250 Parallel Drive I only saw the parallel 250 zip drive listed on Iomega's web site, so I assume this is what you have. Long story short, disconnect the zip drive, install XP on your computer, install all Windows Updates, then you should be able to download and install the IomegaWare tools you need. Treeman

leyima, Maybe the computer is just as confused as me! Can you format the Dell drive on the Compaq, then do a fresh install of XP on the Dell drive after you install it back to the Dell laptop? Treeman
