  1. What is the difference between the full and lite editions?
  2. I like Fastone Image Viewer as well If anyone is looking for something even lighter than Fastone Image Viewer I would like to recommend FreeVimager
  3. Avast have a free version that works with Windows 98, http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
  4. Just thought I'd report back to confirm that it worked, I am now using a "Genuine" 32 bit version of Vista Home Premium Thank you for helping me
  5. I didn't think so, oh well. Thank you gamehead200
  6. I have a genuine disc with serial number for Vista Home Premium 64 bit which I bought by mistake and it will not work with some of my hardware. I recently built my mum a PC and bought a genuine version of Vista Home Basic 32 bit (which she requested). Could I use my mum's disc and my serial number to install Vista on my PC? I wouldn't mind if I only ended up with Home Basic as long as it was legal because I'm sick of looking at XP
  7. In order to try and solve an error that kept appearing in Event Viewer I attached a Task which alerts me when the error occurs. I have since discovered that the error is insignificant and can be ignored but I can't work out how to stop the Task alerting me each time the error is logged, does anyone know how to stop these messages?
  8. Thank you for taking the time to reply JedMeister I want to remove the classic theme as well. If you right click an application's icon, select Properties, click the Compatibility tab, click to check the Disable Visual Themes box, click OK and start the application you'll see what I mean. When running in safe mode Visual Themes are turned off as well. I've got a couple of old PCs that I want to make use of but they are quite slow. I've sped them up a bit by turning off unnecessary services and using light weight applications and I want to try and squeeze a touch more speed out of them
  9. Is there a way to remove Visual Themes from all applications as if the were running in Compatibility Mode?
  10. Spambrave's free Lite edition still supports Windows 98 and up http://www.spambrave.com/spam-blocker-features.html
  11. Thanks for your replies Chozo4, I didn't know about UberKern, I'll try that herbalist, I doubt my skills are good enough to do as you do but I will look in to it. Fortunately for me Spybot S&D still supports 98 and Avast's latest release still supports 98. CharlotteTheHarlot, I haven't tried Opera 9.5 Beta on 98 yet. My only source of information is from Download.com's page which says it requires Windows XP/Vista (I hope they are wrong), link.
  12. Just wondering what everyone is planning to use when the software makers drop support for 98? Avira, AdAware, ZoneAlarm have stopped support for 98 already, Firefox, Opera and AVG all will drop 98 with their new products that are almost ready to take over from the current versions
  13. I've just installed SP 3.0 BETA 1 on a clean install of 98 SE and everything worked perfectly. Nice work, thanks
  14. Security and stability are my main concerns. If those two items are covered I'm happy. Thanks for making AutoPatcher
  15. Thanks for your replies evreyone. Before anyone replied I installed 98SE, installed SP2.1a, and ran the autopatcher v1.5. Since it was a clean install and there wasn't any important data on the machine I figured I'd nothing to loose . Everything seems to be fine, I did get an error about the ASPI after the autopatcher had finished but it doesn't seem to be affecting anything. I plan to use Seamonkey rather than IE, I will update and keep IE though because every now and again I make webpages and I would like to check their compatability. As for the memory, I just want to use it as a general internet and office PC. It feels responsive enough at the moment for what I want it for but, if it begins to get bogged down as I load it up with apps I'll invest in another 64Meg I see that a new version of the autopatcher is out, version 1.6. As I haven't done anything other than test out the PC I might format it and start again just to test out the new autopatcher. I think I'll run it's missing updates check as glocK_94 suggested first this time.
  16. I ran version 1.5 of the autopatcher on a clean install of 98SE + SP2.1a. All seemed to work fine apart from upon the last reboot Windows complained about ASPI being older than the version it should be (can't remember the exact error, sorry). I've saved the log file if you need it, thanks for your work
  17. Actually it needs either to be installed on the MBR or on a floppy Exactly, the original post said, If Linux was installed with the bootloader in the root partition the MBR would be untouched and Windows 95 would "always boots as normal". Then simply install GAG to a floppy, and configure it to boot the Linux partition when inserted.
  18. GAG realy is very good and easy to use, you don't even have to install it to the hard dic's MBR
  19. If you only have one hard drive things could be a bit difficult. Most Linux distros can't run on a FAT file system and need their own filesystem, this would require you to "resize" the partiton of you hard drive containg Win 95 thus making it samller and introducing the risk of something going wrong and damaging your Win 95 install. If however you have a second hard drive you could install something like DSL which lets you use a boot floppy to overcome you not being able to boot from the CD. Because DSL is a live CD you will be able to test out your PC's compatability before you install anything. As for a bootloader most distros use either GRUB or Lilio which they install to your Master Boot Record by default, most also offer the option to install the bootloader to the Root partiotion (were your linux is installed) so that then your Win 95 will boot normal. I'm not sure if DSL offers the option to install to the Root partition but if it does you could then install GAG to a floppy disc and just insert that when you want to run Linux.
  20. Hi all, I'm new here I've built a PC from spare parts and I intend to install Windows 98SE on it. I was wondering what people would recomend would be the best way to getting it secure and usable? There a 2 projects that I've seen so far on here, SP2.1a and the Autopatcher that look interesting and very helpful. Am I right in thinking that after installing the SP2.1a update that I would still need further updates, if yes which ones? The Autopatcher sounds the best option but, how Alpha is it's Alpha status and would a newbbie like me manage? And then there is the option of downloading the official and unoffical updates by hand and then installing them. I suppose this way would allow for more personalisation but would require more work. If anyone is interested in the PC's specs they are, 800Mhz CPU, 64MB RAM, 10gig HDD, ATI Rage 2 gfx card, Sound Blaster 16, and a Realtech network card.
