  1. I used vista home premium for about a year on my laptop. After much frustration (and failure) of trying to get it to function decently I went back to xp for stabillity. Now I absolutely hate it!!!!! Sure XP is very stable, but I'm use to vista and at this point I would rather have vista on my laptop. Any version. I think I should be able to run at least the basic version of vista on my laptop and have it stable. The main issue that I had was with playing songs and videos. It would skip, pause freeze up while playing no matter what song or video that I played. Being a huge music lover and someone who uses their PC to watch dvds and tv shows online, that s**t won't work. It even messed up after I installed sp1. Can someone help me stablize it to where it will work for me? My pc specs are in my siggy.
  2. Hi Guys, I need some advice. I've finally made the decision to go back to xp. I love vista, but my laptop isn't stable with vista. It runs terribly slow, constantly freezes up and overheats even after I've installed sp1 and after a year of frustration I give up. Before I downgrade I want to know is there a way that I can get the aero glass theme or even the black vista basic theme for xp. I can't deal with the awful default themes that come with xp especially that bright blue one (that was the one thing that I hated about xp). The only reason I upgraded to vista was for the aero theme (and because I got the vista anytime upgrade dvd for free without buying a new pc) so I want to try and get a theme that looks like vista for xp if that's possible. I tried the vista transformation pack, but I didn't get the results I wanted, plus my pc crashed. Any suggestions?
  3. 2GB Ram is the max that my laptop will hold
  4. Seems like you've got your problem fixed already, but just another tip for you if something else like this happens: lots of times this kind of thing happens when your computer is low on RAM or video memory. Since you upgraded from XP, it's entirely possible that those things are getting more eaten up than usual. You may benefit from expanding your RAM and video memory for peak performance Hey LukeSkillz , That was the main reason I had to make this post. I had already tried that. When I had XP Pro I only had 512MB Ram and I upgraded to 2GB Ram when I went to Vista Business. That was what was confusing me. I couldn't figure out why my videos were freezing up with 2GB Ram.
  5. Thanks nitroshift! ffdshow solved my problem. I can play them without any problems now.
  6. Hey guys......me again, I'm having some issues playing certain types of videos. Everytime I play a mpeg, wmv or flash video (flv) with either RealPlayer 11 or Windows Media Player 11 it goes very slow and freezes up frequently. I've only had this problem since I upgraded from xp to vista. I wouldn't expect a video to freeze up with 2GB of ram in my laptop. Is there a way to stop this.....besides getting rid of realplayer. I know most people hate it, but It's been my prefered player for years and I use it to save flash videos from a lot of websites. I don't really care about windows media player since I don't use it very often. I just want RealPlayer stable enough to play my videos since it's the one that can save and play flash videos. Any advice? Also, Is the size my page file set correctly? I have it set between 3-4GB. Is that too much for vista or does it need to be maxed out (4GB)?
  7. Thank You so much ideas for the links! I'm gonna try this immediately. And thank you LukeSkillz for the myvistaboot link.
  8. Hi Guys, I'm wanting to know if it's possible to customize vista's boot screen. By default we only have 2 choices and I hate both of them. I want to use the boot screen that's in the latest version of the vista transformation pack: The problem is that I can't install the vista transformation pack on my pc because it's made for other operating systems. Is it possible to manually change the bootscreen like you could in xp of am I stuck with the 2 that came with vista?
  9. I personally use Yamicsoft Vista Manager. http://www.yamicsoft.com/vistamanager/index.html It's has a built-in registry cleaner and a registry defrager. It works great!
  10. I'm not worried about firefox opera messing up my pc. I just got tired of it freezing up everytime I tried to pull up a web page. I usually have to restart my pc when that happens. I'm hoping version 3 of firefox will be bettter so I can have another browser to choose from. Opera usually runs very slow for me too.
  11. Thanks for the standalone version of IE6. I didn't know it existed. There's one simple reason why I don't use firefox............I hate it. I've tried it several times and each time I got terrible results. All it does is freeze up and crash with any page that I tried to pull up. It crippled my system worst than opera (and we all know how well opera works).
  12. Hey Guys, I'm considering using vlite to remove the awful IE7 and replacing it with IE6. I was wondering if anyone has tried this and if so what were the results? Did vista function properly with IE6 or did you have more problems? I also need to know how to slipstream IE6 into my vista dvd. Thanks!
  13. Hey Guys, I recently installed Vista Basic on my laptop and soon after I configured my pc the way I wanted it my internal DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive and my external usb DVD-RW drive would disappear after I would restart my pc. Vista would try to re-install the drives everytime my pc started and each time it failed. I re-installed vista 3 times and It did the same thing. After getting frustrated and extremely p***ed off I searched yahoo and found this info: Click Start then Run and type regedit...click "Ok" In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} In the right pane, are UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters listed? If so follow the steps below: Right click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and choose "Export"...name this file filters and save it to the desktop. Right click on LowerFilters and choose "Delete"...do the same for UpperFilters. Log off Windows and then back on. Check the drives. I followed these easy steps and my drives re-installed instantly without restarting. You might have to restart your pc to get this to work. The person who made the thread had a 64-bit system, but it worked for my 32-bit system too. Just thought I would share this so others wouldn't waste a whole day re-installing vista trying to fix this issue like I did. Take Care Adrian Here's the original site with this info: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Vista-64-bi...AR-t151524.html
  14. Everytime I check for a directX update it tells me tries to download Verison 9.0c. I usually close the page before it starts. I wanted to know if it is this possible to go back to v9 and if so should I downgrade based on my pc settings?
  15. eventhough most people hate it I've used panda antivirus for years and never had a problem. FYI: If you do try it make sure it's called panda antivirus 2008 and not panda internet security. I had some problems with that program.
  16. I've had this issue since I purchased my 160GB USB WD External Hard Drive. Vista takes 3 minutes or longer to load with it plugged in but if I uplug it vista takes less than 30 seconds to load. I also hate that it take almost 5 minutes to recognize the drive if I plug it in after vista loads yet if I plug it in on a system that has xp it takes less than 5 seconds to access it. Something needs to be done about this or i'm gonna have to get rid of thois one and go to another brand (I don't want to do that). I also have this slow loading problem when my external dvdrw drive is plugged in.
  17. Thanks for all of the guides IcemanND and djnes. I didn't know I could use BartPE to do that.
  18. What is a good program to make an image of my hard drive that works with vista? I have vista setup the way that I want it and I want to burn an image onto some dvd's so that I re-format my drive, make 2 partitions and install xp and vista on the same hard drive. Plus it's good to have a backup in case of a crash. I tried to use norton ghost 12 but I didn't know what the hell I was doing and I couldn't get it to work. Can anyone help me out? *FYI I removed Windows Backup with vlite*
  19. I tried that and it didn't allow me to gain access to the file. The only user that is allowed to change the file is "Trusted Installer". Who is that?
  20. I've used Panda Antivirus for 5 years and it works great for me.
  21. I'm trying to install a dial-up neworking adapter so that I can use my highspeed wireless card with urlsnooper (http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/urlsnooper/index.html) and vista isn't allowing me to alter the netrasa.inf file to do this. Everytime I try to save the new file with the changes that I need to make I get a message telling me that It cannot create the file. Make sure the path is correct. Can some on tell me what I need to do to sucessfully alter this file?
  22. Thanks Man! Do you know how to permanently get rid of the buttons below the address bar? Everytime I remove them they come back when I restart IE.
