  1. Ok, I'll try that. Thanks!
  2. I see the majority says gmail. Thanks for the recommendation and thank you Idontwantspam for posting some of the features that they have. I'll sign up for a gmail account today and give it a try.
  3. Sometimes when I connect to the internet I minimize my browser and see a box that says "Send E-Mail For Review" and it has a bunch of lines going through it. It's not causing me any problems, but I was wondering if this is a tracking program or part of windows? I use to get this popup on xp too. This started about 2 or 3 months ago.
  4. I've used hotmail since 2000 and everything was ok up until recently when they made some changes that I hate. It basically looks like outlook express and windows mail now which I absolutely hate plus I get a ton of vulgar junk mail now. The filter that they have does nothing no matter what setting you use. I want to shut my address down and move to another one. What free e-mail service do you guys like\recommend?
  5. I'm gonna get a better video card and more memory in a few days. My PC can hold up to 4GB of ram, but since it's a 32-bit pc will it actually show 4GB or will I only be able to use 3GB?
  6. Don't know if I posted on this topic, but If I did I'll post again. Most people hate the one I use, but I personally like panda antivirus. It works great for me. Some people say that It slows their systems down, but I don't have any problems with it and my system doesn't run slow. I've used it on several computers and never had a problem.
  7. thanks. I won't delete them. I can just disable them after I install vista. Thanks for all your help.
  8. Thanks for the reply. I was given the anytime upgrade dvd by a friend. I plan on purchasing my license through microsoft's website, but I want to make sure that I buy the right one. I already got a home basic license from microsoft, but I really want to use home premium since basic has nothing to offer. I never even considered using ultimate. That's something I'll have to think about. This is a newer pc than the one I had. My old laptop was a P4 1.6GHz with 512 mb ram (couldn't go any higher), cd-rom and a 30gb hard drive. So this one is considered a major upgrade for me. I'll play with vlite and see what I can come up with. Ome more thing, Is is best to disable readyboost, superfetch and indexing or should I leave them enabled?
  9. Hi Guys I just got a newer pc and I want to run vista. I was wondering what's the best configuration for me to use with these settings: Intel Pentium 4 HT 2.8 Ghz Processor (Single Core) 2 Ghz DDR RAM (Can Go Up To 4GB) Western Digital 160 GB Hard Drive Lite-On DH20A4P 16X DVD-RW Drive Intel® 82865G Graphics Controller SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio Now naturally I will upgrade my video card in the future to one that will run aero, but for now I want to use what I have to run vista. What version of vista do you recommend and should I vlite it or not? I ran the upgrade advisor and it told me business, but it's also told me business on my last 2 desktops and my old laptop, so I really don't know if It's right. Also I don't know if I need to run vlite or not and I really don't know what to disable or remove. If I need to can someone give me somd tips as to what I need to remove ort disable to make vista go faster or is it best to just install vista without using vlite? Thanks In Advance
  10. Thanks for pointing that out. I only get MMX, SSe and SSE2 so I guess it's 32-bit only for me.
  11. downloaded and ran it, but maybe i'm missing something cause I don't see where i'd find that info. What tab is it on?
  12. This may be a really stupid question and if it is I apologize in advance, but I was wondering if there is a way that I can find out if my system supports x64? I just got a newer desktop and It can have up to 4gb of ram and I think I read somewhere on this forum that you only have 3gb of useable memory with x86 even if you have 4gb installed. How do I know if my pc can support x64?
  13. Ok, I'll try to get that one. I would add memory to it even if I run xp pro. Thanks for all your help.
  14. Thanks. Sadly I'm on a tight budget so these were pretty much in my price range. I could go up to $300, but that's the most I can spend right now. Now I found one on another site that has these standards: Shuttle Desktop PC AMD X2 4400 2.2 GHz Dual Core 1GB OCZ DDR400 RAM 160GB WestDigital Hard Drive Hardware Info: Processor: AMD X2 Dual core processor 4400+, 2.2GHz 1MB Cache2 160 GB WestDigital SATA 1 GB OCZ DDR400 RAM Video Card: ATI X800XT Plantinum Edition DVDRW CDRW Software Info: Loaded OS: Windows XP Would this one be better?
  15. I'm not fond on celeron processors either. I would prefer an Pentium processor (may put one in). I was hoping that It would be functional for vista, but I'm learning the hard way that nothing is working properly with vista unless I vlite It and remove nearly everything from it. I can deal with xp.
  16. Hey guys , I'm considering buying a new pc next week and I was looking at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16883104035 I like this desktop because of it's size since I'm limited on space, but I have a few questions that I need answered before I pay for one of these and I was hoping you guys could help me out (Sorry if the questions are stupid). 1. This desktop has a 64-bit processor. I don't know anything about 64-bit computers. Can I use the software that I have for my 32-bit pc or do I have to re-buy all my programs for 64-bit ? 2. I see that it come with linux. Will these run windows? I would like to run vista home basic or vista home premium with the aero theme (after upgrades of course), but If I can't run vista I would at least like to run xp pro. 3. I want to put my internal dvd burner in this desktop. Is that possible? 4. Is it worth it? I would mainly use this pc for fun, but I will use it for work as well.
  17. Oops. Forgot to attach the file. Here it is. This is my home premium one. I tried it after I did the business one (which I threw away). Last_Session.ini
  18. MODS: If this is in the wrong section I apologize. Hey Guys, I need some help with vlite. I need to make vista business work on my laptop, but everytime I tried to vlite it myself I messed up and got error messgaes which cancelled the install. I need to remove the bloat from vista and slipstream sp1 to make it function at a decent speed on my laptop without messing things up. I tried using the non-vlited version of vista, but It was very slow and took up too much hard drive space. I will need to keep the smartcard functionality for my usb smart card reader and I need windows update to work so I can install the latest updates. Here are the specs of my laptop: Intel Pentium 4 1.6 GHz Processor 512 MB Ram (Wont't go any higher) Toshiba 30 GB Hard Drive ATI Mobility M6 Graphics Adapter (will work with vista) CD-ROM (for now) I ran the upgrade advisor and it said that the business version is the one that I needed so I know my laptop can run vista. I've seen "lite" version of vista business online which could fit on one cd which is what I'm looking for, but I don't want to use hacked/jacked/cracked software when I can use my original disc and do it myself. Can anyone help me remove the things I don't need so I can get the best performance on my laptop?
  19. I don't have any hal.exe. If the message was "missing hal.dll", I think she could have solved it with a repair console, booting from an XP cd. That's what I was thinking. I thought it was hal.dll. I'll tell her to try the recovery console and see if that works
  20. Hey Guys, A friend just e-mailed me with some issues she's having. She said that she tried fixing a com+ issue and somehow the file hal.exe disappeared. She tried to copy it from the xp disk but it wouldn't work so she just ordered a new hd and a transfer kit. Now after installing the new hard drive and installing xp pro she can't install sp2 (she's not installing sp3 due to all the problems she read that people were havng with it) and she can't installl drivers for the USB host controller, PCI simple com controller, and Network controller drivers for her pc. She tried using her xp disc, manual and automatic driver search and windows update all to no avail. She also can't use her mouse or transfer files from her old hard drive. Can someone tell me what she needs to do to install those drivers for her pc?
  21. Hey Guys, As some of you may know I've made many posts relating to my windows vista issues. Well, today (by accident) I figured out what It was. Besides the problems that were pointed out to me in my previous thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/Ok-Guys-t115154.html There was a program that I was using that ultimately f****d up everything. And that my friends Is Nero 8 Ultra Edition. I installed vista home basic today and evereything was working fine until I installed nero. Then I started having the same problems that I was having before with the video and audio not playing right. I didn't realize until I found this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=102840 that nero 8 had a lot of directshow filters that It installed without me knowing it. Eventhough I didn't install a lot of the bloatware that comes with it (who needs all that stuff anyway) it still messed up my laptop. After I uninstalled nero everything went back to normal . So take my advice and stay away from the full verison of nero 8. If I had known this It would've saved me from a year of heartache and pain.
  22. Using the same tool, check the model of your motherboard and do another search on Google. MAKE SURE that your motherboard can support memory that operates at a faster speed. If it doesn't, then the only upgrade you could really do is on the hard drive. $150 for 2GB of RAM? Ouch. I spent about $90 on 4GB of RAM for my laptop a few months back. Another suggestion - look online for better prices. Big name stores usually put a huge mark-up on most of the items they sell. WOW! $90 for 4GB? That's cheap. I got mine from beatbuy and they were $75 for each 1GB Stick and I thought I got a good deal. I didn't think I could beat that. I'll look online next time. About the motherboard model. I pulled it up and It says "Chipset Model". Is that what I need to search for?
  23. ****, I just purchased new ram about 2 months ago. Why didn't they tell me that when I asked about upgrading to vista? ****SIGH*** I will check into the new hard drive. Those are cheap right now. I'll have to wait on the memory. I just blew $150 on the 2GB of RAM so I'll have to wait getting more. Thanks for clearing up my problems guys
  24. Yes, there is! Not really a test, but a piece of freeware that will be able to identify everything you'd ever want to know about your computer. You can get System Information for Windows (SIW) from http://www.gtopala.com/ . You can check the speed of your RAM by going to the Memory menu item and it will show you something like this: As for the hard drive, you can go to the Storage Devices menu item, retrieve the model number, and then run a search through Google to find the speed. Hope that helps! Thanks! That was what I needed. Here's The memory: and here's the hard drive info: http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Fujitsu-Siemen...DE-Notebook-HDD
  25. Real quick, do you know the speed of your ram (Mhz) and your HD's(rpms)? sounds like you are having bottle necks at one or the other. recommendations would be to check out the reliability and performance section of computer management, start a MP3 or Video and check out this section and you should see what is causing you issues Offhand....no I do not . Is there a test that I can run on xp to figure it out or do I need to re-install vista first?
