  1. Hi guys, just posting to let you know about the existance of an archived copy of the latest build of Steam from last year. It might be a good idea to add it your personal backups. It has a steam.cfg file with settings to prevent further auto updates. Hope it helps! https://archive.org/details/steam_201901 https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/abtw53/steam_build_nov_26_2017_archived_for_xpvista/

  3. Yeah this happens. this may caused by importing ArcticFox "upstream" changes https://github.com/rmottola/Arctic-Fox I may have a deeper look on it next week. (due to Lunar New Year holidays, I don't have time on it in next few days)

  4. Well I finally forced the update yesterday using the update assistant. I guess I'll now never know why I wasn't being offered the update by Windows Update, let's now see if the next one is offered, whenever that's due! All went fine, no apparent problems other than the usual blizzard of error and warning messages in the Windows logs now on every boot. Now time for the usual fun research on how to get rid of as many of them as possible that you seem to have to do after every update!

  6. Been a while since I posted one of these, but anyway here it is... SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR FEBRUARY 1, 2019: Added MailNews by roytam1 to "E-mail Clients" section. Removed Dropbox from "Cloud Storage Clients" section, as new versions of the software will no longer install in Windows Vista and older versions will no longer connect to the Dropbox service from my testing. Added Steam (Jan 4, 2019) build as the last version for Windows Vista, along with information on how to prevent the software from automatically updating (resulting in Vista compatibility loss). Added AssaultCube to "Games" -> "Active Development" section. Added EditPad Lite to "System File Viewers/Editors" section. Hope all the XP/Vista users have continued to make use of my list. Sorry about not being too active lately.

  7. Updating this thread for the people that will end up here through search engines: In Windows 10 the registry key is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStorAC\Parameters\Device Create a new dword value named EnableAPM with a 0 value and hdd head parking is gone. Note that iaStorAC might be iaStorA or iaStorAV in some cases.

  8. You can stop Steam automatic-updates by adding this line (-noverifyfiles) to the Steam shortcut. Just remember to do a full backup of your Steam folder on 31. Dec 2018, so you can keep using the last available version on XP/Vista. You can still login and download games.
