durex Posted January 10, 2005 Share Posted January 10, 2005 Im not sure if this is the proper term to use... but I couldve sworn there was a thread of programs that you could say, toss on a usb key and use on any pc; as opposed to having to re-install the program. It had mIRC mentioned twice or so.... THERE!(you have enough clues )And FYI, firefox is also a "direct copy" browser - in fact the most suited among the entire group for that method. gamehead200 Posted January 11, 2005 Share Posted January 11, 2005 Does anyone know of a small browser (under 5MB) that can run on a USB stick and not write to the registry or hard drive? Firefox is too big and takes too long to load on a USB stick, Mozilla Embedded is too large as well (can't figure out which files are safe to remove), and anything to do with IE is out of the question... I got a 1GB 2.0 Hispeed key, so space and speed shouldnt be an issue.Now prathapml... you mentioned that firefox can work so long as you dont include extensions. Im assuming because these are copied to the AppFiles folder and obviously these wouldnt be in place if I used it on a differnt pc. But heres a question.. if I run firefox using -default profile, doesnt it use the extensions that are in the default\profiles folder instead? Is there more info about that switch somewhere? From what you say, running firefox with "-default" at command-line will make it use the default profile in the installed folder. If so, its great news for configuring and installing extensions before using "direct copy" on firefox. (or am I mis-understanding what you said!)Presently what I'm doing is to have the extensions manually added into the installed folder of firefox (and edit the .js files by hand to add the references). This way the user profile need not be separately configured (the first time firefox starts up, it picks up these extensions from default profile). I made this assumption based on the info from Astas method of including your extensions and themes for an UA install of firefox found in Simonsays firefox thread. Basically it has you launch firefox using the default profile and install all of your extensions and themes, zip up your profile folder and unzip it on a newly installed firefox system.. this will make any normail profile use these extensions.Youll notice that when you use this option and you install an extension it will show up in "defaults\profile\extensions" folder, instead of the app data folder. I havent tried running firefox without the app data yet, but as soon as I get a chance to try this out on my usb key ill post up the results.
