You can't necessarily equate a 5000:1 contrast ratio on a Plasma to even a 1000:1 contrast ration on an LCD. Heck...sometimes you can't even compare constrast ratios between different LCD models. What you have to realize is that the "1" part of the ratio isn't equal on all of them. They all quote ratios, but none of them quote what the baseline (the "1") of the ratio is.

Then in your opinion, which LCD comes closest to Plasma in terms of color and contrast?

Ones you can buy without selling your house.

No LCD can come close to a Plasma display. For starters, LCDs cannot have a pure or near black pixel like Plasmas can - you can't just turn off a pixel and expect that it'd be completly black in an LCD screen.

But there are a few LCD screens that are quite good, like the ViewSonic VP930b, Eizo FlexScan L997 and the LaCie 321. Now they aren't exactly cheap, but you wouldn't have to sell your house to buy it

JESUS! Those are horrible screens!

No tilt adjustment?! What is that?

I'll look at that new samsung screen. The 2000:1 contrast one. Supposedly its really vibrant and crisp.

You can adjust the tilt. The ViewSonic site says that you can adjust the "height, tilt and swivel"

That is very sweet indeed. Even tho I don't like samsung with their refurbished exchange policy even if you have a faulty monitor upon arrival

samsung makes really nice LCDs. recently bought a 46" TV, and the only ones with a nicer picture were the expensive sony bravias. (even then, i'd say the sonys were only marginally better, not at all worth the extra 700-800 bucks)

If that's true, then they're breaking existing patents held by BrightSide Technologies Inc., which was recently acquired by Dolby... BrightSide held a patent that essentially took control of any technology that uses variable intensity backlighting to increase visual contrast and brightness.

The HDR-37 (their latest model) had a contrast ratio of about 250,000:1 and was brighter than any other display I had ever seen. Watching Return of the King on that thing was just awesome...

This week LG.Philips LCD announced that it is first in the world to develop and launch a 14.1-inch size flexible display. Dubbed “technology e-paper,” the LG.Philips display uses technology from E-Ink Corp., and is able to produce 4,096 colors.

No more crappy back-light when you use it in bright environments. And energy efficient? Nice.
