XP Network problem

Hey, i've been trying to fix a problem with my home network for the past few days

with little success.

Heres the problem:

I have 3 computers (2 PCs and a Laptop) my main PC is hardwired to the router,

and the laptop is using a wireless card. The internet and network are working

fine on these 2.

I have a new computer which is using a wireless card and heres where the problem

begins.

The PC has excellent signal strength and is connecting to the network, but it is not

recieving any information, i.e. its not working !

When i have network settings set to automatically detect IP address's, i get the

limited or no connectivity error. It appears its not able to pick up the correct address.

I have entered the IP address in manually,the limited or no connectivity error goes and it says it is connected, but it is still not recieving any information (packets)

Any help on how i can correct this IP madness is much appreciated.

169.254.X.Y is an APIPA Address, your new PC is not finding your DHCP server, if you have one. I've had the same problem in the past. Never did fix it to my satisfaction, but moving my Wireless Router higher in the house helped.

DHCP is enabled on the router, why is it that the new PC cant find it ? the laptop works wirelessly in the same location as the PC thats not working.

Had a similar problem with a laptop for a home worker recently. It just would not work in the same room as the router, move it into any other room in the house and it was and still is fine. Move it into the same room and it is initiall y fine but then drops off.

I'm making the assumption that it's too close to the router, I can't think of anything else....

wouln't say thats it, the router is downstairs, PC is upstairs, good distance between them, but it still gets a strong signal

Have you checked if the DHCP server will give out more than 2 addresses, this is something that can be modified to increase security altho' it's not usually restricted as default.

what happens if you hardwire it to the router(i know it's a headache carrying a PC around but it's something you may have to try! ;-) )

also, have you tried updating the drivers/firmware for the card?

i have been busy for the past week but eventually got time to hardwire the PC into the router, and it works perfectly. .

this is starting to get very irritating, does anybody have any other ideas ?

how do i check if the dhcp server will give out more than 2 addresses ?

Just a thought. Is the WEP code correct?

Its using a WAP, and yes its correct

Try using a static IP instead. If that works, then theres gotta be a setting somewhere.

i've had this problem a few times myself

I've found that connecting the router to the computer thats not working, via a cat5 cable, then restarting the router, leave it connected for a wee bit, then unplug the cat5 and try connect wirelessly... for some unknown reason that worked for me

It seems I have a similar issue here. but I don't know how to change those address from ipconfig. Ipconfig seems to only let me view them. I'm not at the problem computer until tomorrow, but I would like to know how to set those ipconfig settings manually if someone can point me in the right direction.

what a problma! if u want to change your network setting in your pc go to the my network places icon, which is located in your desktop then hover the cursor over it and right click on it select properties at this point u will be able to change the pc network settings selecting among the network connections u have, wireless or the wired local network connection, then select the one u want to change and right click on it then select properties, after that tc/ip protocol select then click on properties at this stage u will be able to change all the ip config.
