Hello

Try to search more info on bartPE / Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) / WinPE

it depends what you want for your live CD. Live Cd with tools or only wxp ?

You can also look for an live cd like ghost 9/10 which start on a wxp base

I don't think that is possible. Also, it would severely shorten the flash drive's lifespan. Flash drives can handle only so many read/write operations, and nothing reads/writes more than an operating system.

A bootable CD is probably the best way to go. You can't really save your settings/files between sessions, but it'll get you your desktop with your programs wherever you go.

If you use an IMAP based e-mail with portable Thunderbird, that shouldn't really be an issue. Other files, you can store on some web space via FTP or the like.

Have a look at ReatogoPE as well. It'll get you a good foothold on a bootable Windows environment that looks and feels like Windows. BartPE uses a different shell, so it'll look different than what you're used to.

OP post #3 switched to usb...

I think Reatogo now has an option to keep the user profile on a usb stick, which is probably the most portable solution.

No, it is PERFECTLY possible, and YES, you definitely need EWF if you plan to install on a Flash based device, but once you have it set, there is no problem.

Moreover newish Flash memories have better wear leveling techniques, see my posts here for links:

The other possibility is using INSTEAD of XP a BartPE solution, booting it to RAM, of course size of the boot image has to be as little as possible, depending on the amount of RAM you have.

There is a "mixed mode" solution, using a minimal BartPE booted from RAM and either SDI or RAW disk images, search on the 911CD forum for posts by Sanbarrow and by Pavel, that will probably in the future "backported" to Dietmar's "Boot XP from USB" project above referenced:
