The complete list of hotfixes & updates for Windows 98se

So, in preparation for adding localization support, i need to first work out which hotfixes are language dependent and which ones aren't. I suppose my first question has to be: what's the deal with hotfixes and localizations? Are they all language dependent?

Anyone, anyone? I want to start including some hotfixes into my unattended boot cd project

Is there a list like this thats avaliable for windows ME?

Probably not because you'd have to be a bit zealous to create a list like this one, and, let's face it, who's going to get passionately zealous about Windows Me? (enough to go to the trouble that is)

The job is there for the taking ... me, i'd prefer to jostle with many others for the Win98se one ...

Yes there is a list of hotfixes for ME that I compiled some time ago. It is a bit old so it may not be complete. It's from a little bit before the_guy started the ME service pack. Search the forum to find it. You'll find the rest under the WinME service pack thread.

I saw youtube vid of win98se dressed up like xp, so i was going to post them files here long time ago, but couldnt find the old old old CDs ;-)

fortunately i got the files from buddy, so here it is: some cool xp-alike startup and shutdown screens for windows 98se (logo.sys, logow.sys, logos.sys) and if anyone is interested to make it same as seen on youtube vid i can post other files too (wallpap, sounds, theme with icons and colour scheme)

thats the vid:

imho it'll be nice if someone adds those cute startups/shutdowns to some new 98SE Service Pack...

I'll see what i can do ... i was thinking of categorizing all the updates (ie for IE6, MDAC, Critical, Official, etc -- it's about time i did some work on that list, been a while.

I just took a look at the complete list of updates.

Its quite cool that kb925672 can be installed without modification, XML Core Services 4.0 SP2 is really supported by win98?

Actually Q925672 [the EXE] can be installed only on...

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1/6.0 SP2 for Windows 2000 SP4/XP SP1/2003 [and newer] MSXML Control 4.0 SP2 MSXML4.DLL Security Vulnerability Fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=925672

Direct download [4.8 MB]:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/0...b925672-enu.exe

Yes, it can be installed on 9x OSes [98 and newer], but only if one extracts the MSI file from inside the EXE first, and then runs the MSI file on Win98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME [MSI files require MSI Installer APIs to be installed].

If you run msxml.msi , the MSXML*.DLL files [MSXML4.DLL + MSXML4R.DLL] are installed following the NTx model, into %windir%\WINSXS subdirectories, not in %windir%\system [9x model], which is useless for 9x OSes, they do not use those directories nor the registry entries associated with them, as far as I'm aware.

... Besides, Q925672 installs an obsolete version:

MSXML4.DLL 4.20.9839.0

Newest version [for 98/ME + 2000/XP/2003 OSes] is:

MSXML4.DLL 4.20.9841.0

from Q927978, found here:

http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#XML

Dunno about the above mentioned files (MSXML*.DLL), but Visual C 2005 runtime redistributable also uses the SxS system, and the libraries are correctly loaded when called by some application (tested it with some Miranda IM plug-ins). On this basis, I assume the SxS should work on a 9x system as long as the registry information is correct.

I was curious about updates that have the same files such as

253711/4756US8 Configmg.vxd

273727/273991 vserver.98g/vserver.98s

314757/314941 upnp.dll/4.90.3003.0

etc...

is it really necessary to install updates that have the same files/versions?

soporific:

I was looking through your list [May 16 2007 update]:

- Tools9x.exe link must preserve the upper case:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/TOOLS9X.EXE

My web server is case sensitive.

Your link:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/Tools9X.EXE

returns a 404 error, file not found.

Same here:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/IE931768.exe

must be replaced with:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/IE931768.EXE

If you wish to see the actual URLs to all my files:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/list.php

http://www.mdgx.com/spx/list.php

- IE Audio WAV fix:

M$ has the file on their WU servers, no need to mirror [unless you like to]:

* Microsoft Internet Explorer 4/5/6 for Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME Compressed Audio START.WAV Fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=327922

Direct download [79 KB]:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...DCB7AD3B062.EXE

- KernelEx:

I have changed the link from:

http://www.mdgx.com/spx/KERNELEX.ZIP

to [both versions now]:

* Unofficial Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME KernelEx allows to install + run NTx-only + XP-only applications + games (free GPL):

Soporific,

(All these files have been downloaded from this thread.)

<snip>

Note that there is also 136 items from your list which I DON'T have!! :blushing:

That's a mighty fine list you have there ... once in a while i get feedback worth a ton of gold ... and this is one of them. Thanks to you !! I'll be slowly working my way thru the list in the next few days ... lots will be added to both the main list and obsolete list i have no doubt. Thanks again!

EDIT: i take it all back !!!! Well, i'm not taking back the thanks for the thought to tell me about these missing updates, but my initial check of the first few items on the list was like: where are the missing ones? ie of the following, most are already in the list! And a quick scan down the list says there's many more!

237493USA8 (already in list)

249973USA8 (already in list)

50COMUPD_DLL5-80PATCH (this is missing)

908519FX (this is named kb908519 on the list)

ACTIVEXSCRIPTCONTROL1-01-0-0-8825 (this is missing)

ADDREMOV (this is obsolete)

COPY2GB (its named UCOPY2GB on my list)

CRYPT9X (already in list called UCRYPT9X)

So, my question before i continue down the list is how did you come up with this list? Of the first 9, about half are obviously already there ... it just doesn't make sense! Please advise !!

(and for some light relief humour, lets remember another celebrated occasion when 'it doesn't make sense!' -- this is one of the best South Park sequences ever, it even has its own wiki page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chewbacca_defense :)

"Cochran: Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, Chef's attorney would certainly want you to believe that his client wrote "Stinky Britches" ten years ago. And they make a good case. Hell, I almost felt pity myself! But, ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, I have one final thing I want you to consider. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense!

Gerald Broflovski: Dam* it!

Chef: What?

Broflovski: He's using the Chewbacca Defense!

Cochran: Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, [approaches and softens] does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.")

Gotta love South Park ...

Soporific,

I compared your Monster List on the first page of this thread with the list of files I have downloaded.

And 237493USA8 and 249973USA8 are definetly not there. (but q237493 is there)

I made the comparison automaticaly, through a script. There can be some mistakes, but I can tell you that 237493USA8 and 249973USA8 are not on the monster list on the first page.

===>Maybe you have another list?

The other thing is that some files are named differently. My files came from the "direct download" links posted by MDGx and usualy I don't rename them.

IMO it could be a good idea to add all the known names.

Here are a few name change my script dtected

COPY2GB UCOPY2GB

CRYPT9X UCRYPT9X

DXM9XIE5 DXM9X

IE6-0SP1-KB918439 KB918439

KB891711-V2 KB891711

KB917344-X86 KB917344

KB917734_WINDOWSMEDIA9 KB917734

KB918547-SLV KB918547

NUSB NUSB31

ROOTSUPD ROOTSUP

I also improved my script to avoid error (thought errors came only in the detection of changed name, I think)

I will redo a list comparison later.
