USB keyboard w/ PS2 adapter not getting reconized

PS/2 mice and keyboards have different pinouts... That's why you can only plug them into their specified ports on the back of your computer. Same goes for those little PS/2 adapters. There are ones made specifically for mice (green) and ones made specifically for keyboards (purple/blue)! ;)

yet they can still plug into any port?

First of all, what adapters are you talking about?

There are "true" adapters, which have USB interface circuitry inside, and there are the adapters for use with dual-mode devices only, which do not contain ANY circuitry.

Pinouts are the same for PS/2 mouse and keyboard; see

http://pinouts.ru/data/KeyboardPC6_pinout.shtml

compare with

http://pinouts.ru/data/PS2Mouse_pinout.shtml

And this is the wiring of the dual-mode adapter - notice how data+/data- become data/clock in two modes:

http://pinouts.ru/InputCables/usb_ps2_mouse_pinout.shtml

The mouse can operate in either USB or PS/2 mode by sensing the signals recieved

Using a USB leyboard with a PS2 adapter (not to tie up a USB port), the system doesn't reconize the keyboard. It does with a USB mouse using a PS2 adapter. It is a Compaq keyboard if that matters.

I will try the keyboard on another box when I can and try the other adapter also. In the mean time any ideas?

Install USB 2.0 drivers and then try to install ur hardware part...

thanx
