My main thought was we know Microsoft will not release updates for Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on Windows 98 anymore.

But they will release the updates for IE6 SP1 on Windows 2000.

And we all know IE is the biggest weakness in Windows 98.

So can we make our own patches for IE on Windows 98 using Windows 2000 updates?

ie6 should remain supported (regardless of os) till ie7 comes out (which will be soon)

i would suggest you get familiar with the alternatives anyway.

P.S. I use Firefox and Opera but I still have IE6 SP1 loaded and want to ensure its locked down best it can be (without removal).

In a word, No. As Windows 2000 and Windows 9.x have totally different underlying kernel architectures. And its much more difficult than using a hex editor.

That is why I am strongly leaning toward uninstalling IE completely. No need to worry about security holes in an application that's not installed. Many people have been keeping IE installed because of Windows Update. Well, it won't be much longer until that's no longer a factor.
