Think I have a virus, wont let me scan

Recommended Posts

I was on the computer last night, and all of a sudden my CD Drive opened. I closed it and 5 minutes later it opened again. I staretd scanning for viruses with PC-cillin 2000, and it closes twice for no reason. Im tired, so I go to bed wondering whats going on. Tonight my CD Drive opens again. I scan for viruses and it closes 5 times after about scanning for 5 seconds. My Internet Explorer windows close as do my AOL Instant Messanger ones. I restart my computer and most of my shortcuts are gone from the start menu. Any ideas?

can't really say how to solve it .I recommend reformat the pc.thats what I usually do when I have big errors.Could be windows problem either being eaten up by virus or something else.try use other programs to fix .example : scan disk.

PC-cillin 2000 is a very low-end scanner. Norton Anti-Virus or even McAfee is far better at detecting viruses and trojans, even AOL baddies.

McAfee has a free online scanning service that would be better than PC-Cillian at detecting/cleaning something wrong. http://www.mcafee.com/

Since the desktop icons are corrupt it may be to late and you might have to format and start over as roger04 suggested.

Hope this helps.

i would say that opening cd-rom it a sign of a trojan, so the first thing to do is to dissconnect from the internet, and then use a virus scaner.

if its still closes the antivirus, then try to install another one, or try to use online scan, but then you will have to be connected to the net.

formating is a good idea thou...

well, tell us how it goes :)

I know what you have. theres a program that people download to control your comp. they can stop your programs running (the virus scan prob?), and they can print of messages or open and close your cd rom as much as they want, maybe you could try and switch to a diff isp and get a new ip? or maybe you could try and get strong firewall :)

#1. Download and install spybot

http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=start

#2. Download and install ad-aware

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

#3. Download and install either Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee.

#4. Run this:

http://www.trojanscan.com/

#5. Disconnect from internet. ( If you get Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee make sure you update them. Don't know about mcAfee but norton has auto updater with click of a button)

Run all programs starting with #1. and on.

This should help you in finding out your troubles.

I restored my computer to the day before this stuff started happening. I then scanned for viruses and it finished and none came up. I downloaded and installed those programs and removed some things from the spybot and ad-aware. Nothing has happened so far(like my CD Drive opening, ect.) after I did this, so should I just wait it out and hope for the best for now?

Repair or reinstall IE 6. Sounds like you had a baddie on the PC.

Now it is time to consider the source of the baddie. Though it may have come from the internet it may have also originated on a CDR or floppy disc that you used to install something. Scan that stuff. May have been an email attachment as well.

Think safe computing in the future. Run those proggies XPerties suggested on a frequent basis. Install the latest Windows Service Pack.
