  1. I just formatted and now have Windows XP Professional, should I get a firewall or will the built in one be fine? If so, what are some good free recommendations?
  2. I downloaded the zap program, and I dont seem to be doing it right. I type in the name of the infected file, and a window pops up asking what I want to open it with. I apologize for responding to this so much, Im just not sure what to do. EDIT: For some reason, evidently the infected file was copied to a different part of my computer but the copy was not infected. I dont know how to use this to get to the infected file, because it starts in documents and settings>(my user name), but the infected file is in the Windows folder that is before documents and settings.
  3. I left my computer for about 3 minutes, and when I came back, all my security products had been closed. Norton, Kerio, The Cleaner, ect. Now what On a different site I saw a post and some people were complaining about some of the same things Im going through, with the instructions on Symantec not working. Is this something that I just have to wait for to fix? I know I asked this earlier, but am I overreacting if Im really worried about this?
  4. Because there were none of the changes in the registry that Symantec said there would be, does that mean there is no threat? It says the threat is low, but if somebody has access to all of my files, then I would think that would be pretty serious. I used www.trojanscan.com and nothing showed up as being infected, yet Norton still says I have a virus. I now have Kerio Firewall running while Im scanning with "The Cleaner". Hopfully it doesnt close out of nowhere like it did yesterday. Should I be really worried about this? I find it kind of scary that somebody could be watching my every move on my computer.
  5. I downloaded "The Cleaner", as suggested by a friend, to try to get rid of the trojan but it automatically closed while scanning. He suggested I get off IE, but when I did a bunch of screens starting popping up and going to random sites. I went into safe mode and tried to delete the infected file, but it still said access denied. I then started back in normal mode and it seems to be fine for now, but I really have no idea what to do. Last time I used The Cleaner my computer started going crazy. Is this trojan something serious that I should be losing sleep over and worrying about? I'll try using that last program that was suggested, but I really don't want IE going crazy again. Also, when I start my computer, a runtime error(with the IE icon next to "Error") pops up saying something like Runtime Error 5 at 003C729C. Im always connected to IE because everytime i try to close it, a bunch more popup. Im not sure if thats related or not, so I thought I would see if anybody else knows.
  6. Well, I restored to last week and everything seems fine with the processes now although the virus is still there. "Modifies the default value of the following registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command This causes the Trojan to execute every time a .exe file is executed." Im not great with computers, so will safe mode make it so no .exe files open? If not, how will I remove it? The things Im supposed to remove to make it stop from automatically opening arent even there yet it still says I have a virus.
  7. I cant open any processes now for some reason. It keeps giving me errors everytime i try to do anything.
  8. It said "failed- access is denied". If I end a process that I want running, it will start again after I reboot right? So if needed I could end all the processes and then delete the virus?
  9. How do I figure out what process it is? And disabling NAV didnt work, it still wouldnt let me manually delete dxdgns.dll.
  10. I clicked properties but didnt see a security tab. I clicked "Advanced" and a window called Advanced Attributes popped up but there was nothing in there to change ownership, just stuff about whether I wanted to index the file for fast searching. Any idea's?
  11. In a Norton AntiVirus Pro Edition 2003 scan it said "The file C:\WINDOWS\dxdgns.dll is infected with the Backdoor.Beasty virus." I tried to delete it but it said access denied, and I went to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...oor.beasty.html and went through the instructions on how to delete the stuff through regedit and none of the stuff I was supposed to delete was even there. I scanned again and its still there and wont let me delete, repair, or quarantine. How do I get rid of this? I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, I wasnt completely sure which area to post it in.
  12. I already have two accounts because my first one was screwed up and wouldnt let me edit internet options. Will I have to always log on to my new account, and if so how can I move my programs to that new one?
  13. I bought it from the symantec site, and how do I make a new user account?
  14. I have Norton Anti-Virus 2003 pro edition and after my computer has been on for awhile(sometimes a few minutes, sometimes a few hours), the icon disappears and it says auto-protect is off and there was an error with my e-mail scanning. I have done everything suggested at http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n...nav&svy=&csm=no and none of it worked. I tried turning off the option to have auto-protect start when my computer started and then turn it on afterwards and that worked for a few days but now its back to giving me errors again. Anybody know what to do?
  15. I recently purchased Norton AntiVirus Professional Edition 2003, and when I try to do a full scan it automatically stops scanning and closes after about 50,000 files. I've tried about 15 times and it always closes. I have Windows XP. Any idea's on what is wrong and how to fix it? (if this is in the wrong forum, I apologize. Since this is mainly about Norton, I thought this would be the best place.)
  16. Oh, I forgot to say that when I tried that trojanscan, both times I tried it said there was an IE Explorer error and it closed my windows. I have IE 6, so Im not sure whats wrong.
  17. I restored my computer to the day before this stuff started happening. I then scanned for viruses and it finished and none came up. I downloaded and installed those programs and removed some things from the spybot and ad-aware. Nothing has happened so far(like my CD Drive opening, ect.) after I did this, so should I just wait it out and hope for the best for now?
  18. I was on the computer last night, and all of a sudden my CD Drive opened. I closed it and 5 minutes later it opened again. I staretd scanning for viruses with PC-cillin 2000, and it closes twice for no reason. Im tired, so I go to bed wondering whats going on. Tonight my CD Drive opens again. I scan for viruses and it closes 5 times after about scanning for 5 seconds. My Internet Explorer windows close as do my AOL Instant Messanger ones. I restart my computer and most of my shortcuts are gone from the start menu. Any ideas?
  19. Almost everytime I do a search, no matter what Im using(google, msn, ect.), it gives me an error and closes IE. Does anybody know how to fix this?
  20. I downloaded the Cleaner, and it says "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" has been changed. What should I do? Edit it or what? Thanks.
  21. I dont have AOL or an AOL CD. Is it ok to just download AIM from their website then? Also, is it ok to back up my buddy list/settings so I dont have to redo everything? Thanks.
  22. It appears cookies somehow got turned off, and it wont let me turn them on. Nothing I do on IE is saved, my address bar is always empty, no history, no passwords are saved, nothing. Everytime I try to get on AIM it asks me if I have a screen name. Everytime I download updates and reboot my computer it says I didnt update. It wont let me restore to an earlier period, either. So I make a new computer account, and I can edit internet options, and more stuff I could do than on the other account. But, after my computer is on for a few hours, my AIM settings go back to default, only 2 out of 20-some links in my address appear, and my bookmarks are in a completely different order. I scanned for viruses, none found. Anybody know how to fix any of this? Thank you.
