This would involve some work + testing with ME system files, eventually modding INF +/- HTA files and probably some registry tweaking.

But unfortunately I don't have a scanner or a digital camera, so I can't test this [yet]. :(

? which "ME" scanner & camera features are u talking about, which win98se doesn't have?

It's more or less the same as in XP. You should just be able to plug your USB image acquisition device and Windows should recognize it automatically without needing to install specific drivers for those devices.

It's just a few files : stimon.exe, stimon.dll and all the WIAsomething.dll

I have removed that component from my system because I found it to interfere negatively with the proper operation of the OS.

Basically stimon.exe would get frequently loaded as a background task for no apparent reason and would considerably slow down the OS from those moments on and after a while I got fed up to constantly have to kill that task.

Maybe the reason was because I have an old scanner that's always plugged on the serial port.

It would be interesting to know if other ME users with a different hardware setup are experiencing problems with this component.

Don't scanners and cameras come with their own drivers already?

LLXX, what PROBLEMCHYLD meant is the "Scanners and Cameras" control panel applet.

-eidenk, yes, STIMON was always a major headache and had to be constantly killed, when we were running winME... getting rid of it improved performance/stability BIG time...

I used to have problems with STIMON under ME but not anymore. un-installed my HP scanner software, deleted the HP scanner registry entries that were left over and re-installed the software. have not had a problem since then.

Microsoft has noted a problem with STIMON causing an invalid page fault in support KB article 306393:
