baileyphil Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Hi Guys Just wondering if i could ask for a little help and adviceGot a bit of a problem, a friend of mine has bought a computer from somewere a good 3-4 years ago, he wanted a upgrade on his memory so asked if id help out, after opening it up i noticed its actually RIMM's inside so i set about trying to get hold of some, they are very expensive so said he would be better changing his motherboard The current socket is 423 so yesterday i went the computer fair to see if i could get a replacment board, after speaking to the man he explained that the 423 socket is now no longer in use and id need to buy a new system, after looking this up on the net i have seen that the 423 is now no longer in use and has been taken over by 478, i was wondering if a 423 chip can go into a 478 motherboard if i got one from somewere?Any advice on this subject would be very gratefully received guys Thanks Phil
jcarle Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 How much memory does he have right now? What are the specifications of his machine? Processor speed/type, etc?
baileyphil Posted January 25, 2006 Author Posted January 25, 2006 At the moment he has got a P4 2gig with 256mb ramits a Packard Bell Ixtreme 9810 if you want more details
nmX.Memnoch Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 2GHz was the fastest Socket 423 P4 released. He could probably get a decent i865 based Socket 478 board, Celeron D 2.8GHz or so and some DDR400 RAM for not much more than adding RAMBUS to his current system. The newer Celeron's have as much cache as his Socket 423 P4 does (the original Willamette P4's only had 256K cache).ASUS P4P800SE Socket 478 Intel 865PE ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail$95.49 ShippedIntel Celeron D 335 Prescott 533MHz FSB 256KB L2 Cache Socket 478 Processor - Retail$82.74 ShippedCORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail$85.81 ShippedTotal: $264.04And for comparison purposes:SAMSUNG ORIGINAL 512MB 184-Pin RDRAM (16bit) ECC Unbuffered PC 800 System Memory - Retail$228.76 x 2 = $457.52 Shipped
puntoMX Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 nmX.Memnoch, you are right. There is no use to spend more cash on a RIMM system (for home use). Low budged solutions like AMD Sempron64 systems score better in many ways and you have new hardware for the price of a RIMM upgrade.
jcarle Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 IMHO, I'd upgrade to 512MB, but then stop there. That would be the last upgrade worth doing on that system, anything else is a waste of money.
baileyphil Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 Thanks guys for all your advice, i have told him to change his system but i wanted to salvage the P4 really so all he needed was a new Motherboard, looks like he will have to get a new system now me is thinking Thanks anyway fellas Phil
