RJM
Hi guys, I just received a new LITE-ON DVD drive from Newegg and installed it in my friends computer (Compaq PIII, Win 98SE) on the second IDE channel as master and the old CD-RW as slave. I thought I’d ask your opinion before I RMA it. The problem is that when I put any CD in it it’s light flashes and the motor briefly spins and then the computer crashes (I have to shut off the power to reboot). I also downloaded the firmware update from Lite-on, the update never gets past 0% even after 15 minutes. The question is this a bad drive or am I just missing something. thanks! Vitalix
Is it on its own IDE cable? Is it correctly jumpered as master or slave on the IDE channel? Do you have it in DMA mode on the IDE controller or PIO?
RJM
It's on the second IDE cable jumper set to master the former CD-RW is also on that cable with the jumper set to slave, there was a CD-R in this position before I installed the DVD. DMA is enabled.
Vitalix
Try running just the DVD drive on its own IDE (take off or unplug the power to the CDRW) and see if it acts the same way.
RJM
Vitalix, Thanks, I will try that tonight.
LLXX
I had a problem with a LITE-ON DVD writer before... almost the same symptoms: it would be detected correctly by the BIOS and Windows, but whenever I put a disk in it would try to spin up and then suddenly the motor would cut off, it'd do this over and over until I ejected the disk.It turns out the problem was the power supply not supplying enough power... didn't know those things took so much power. puntoMX
Also you could try to put them on Cable Select (CS). Some BIOSes/mobos don’t like master slave jumpers that are set. Also I would blame the HP/Compaq mobo for not being compatible with a lot of hardware so try it in another PC (not HP/Compaq) before you RMA it.I hope this helps

RJM
Ok, I tried it with the CD drive disconnected and only the DVD writer connected to the secondary IDE cable with the jumper set to master and had the same problem, the computer locks up when trying to read the CD and I am still unable to update the firmware (update freezes at 0%) . The only writing software installed is Nero 6.0. I have also re-downloaded the update from Lite-On’s site. I have also tried setting the jumpers to cable select with just the DVD and then with both the DVD and CD-RW. I’d wonder about the power supply except for one thing, the inability to update the DVD’s firmware. Thanks all, I’ll get back into it tonight remove everything about CDROM from the device manager and start again. Although the information supplied with the drive says that it will function with the generic WIN-98 drivers. But what makes me believe that it is the DVD writer is the inability to update the firmware
RJM
I decided to do it the easy way, I removed my Sony DVD writer ( Lite-On) from my computer and installed it in place of his new Lite-On. Works perfectly. RMA’d Lite-On DVD. Thanks for the help
