N1K Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Strange, try to use this free tool that I attached called "Bootvis". It should speed up your up and down times..BootVis is a performance trace visualization tool for use with Windows XP systems. Customer research shows a frequently requested feature that users want from their PCs is fast system startup, whether from cold boot or when resuming from standby or hibernation. You can download it HERE
cluberti Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Bootvis may help, but you may also want to look into using UPHClean (User Profile Hive Cleanup service) - not only will it speed up your boot times, it'll log in the event log what it had to do to force your user's registry to unload, and what the culprit is that is likely causing your problems.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=enNote that most slow shutdown issues are caused by (surprise) print drivers and antivirus software holding your registry open, and not relinquishing control over open keys. UPHClean forces a registry unload, which bandaids the shutdown process until you can fix the root cause (which you'll see in the logs, if UPHClean has to do it's thing).

What kind of AV have you got on?Could you please tell us what software did you install after windows reinstall. You should track changes after each software install and see when this delay of shutdown happens..
bilemke Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Another thing I have seen slow the shutdown of some of even the fastest machines... External harddrive enclosures attached via firewire/1394, and in some cases USB.. More so some firewire enlcosures with harddrives in them.
Takeshi Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I don't see how bootvis helps.http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/syspe...ot/default.mspxBootvis.exe is a performance tracing and visualization tool ...Please note that Bootvis.exe is not a tool that will improve boot/resume performance for end users. Contrary to some published reports, Bootvis.exe cannot reduce or alter a system's boot or resume performance. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system.
LLXX Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 BootVis, as its name implies monitors the boot process. The thread starter is asking about shutdown. What part of the shutdown process is taking the longest?
Synapse Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 do you by chance have your comp set to "clean up page file when shutting down"?
