Drewdatrip Posted June 2, 2003 Posted June 2, 2003 DDR Ram is the most commen ram used currently, In both AMD and Intel. So i would reccomend getting about 512 of DDR 333 thats becoming the standard. In regards to what you will need to upgrade, you will need a MObo, CPU, heatsink/fan, ram. Depending on how old your current system is you may have to upgrade your Power supply to P4/xp complient. But besides that you should be good to go..=Drewdatrip
strider_D_3000 Posted June 2, 2003 Author Posted June 2, 2003 ok i got the mother board part but what bout ram i still dont get it, if a mobo says it will support DDR SDRAM do i only get DDR SDRAM? or is there some thing more to it/ like a limit to how much ram i shoud buy and stuff because i dont think i can afford the 500+ram cards after i buy a new althon proc and a mobo that supports it ill prob buy the lesser kinds that cost around 20-30 dollars.---->newbie<------
ThA_FiLeR Posted June 2, 2003 Posted June 2, 2003 The RAM you buy should be equal or slower to the max it supports, for all new mobo's it'll be DDR SDRAM and then it'll tell you a number with PC in front of it like PC2700, PC3200, PC3400 etc. check what the most is you can put on and then buy that or go lower if the prices are to high..
strider_D_3000 Posted June 2, 2003 Author Posted June 2, 2003 lets just say that the mobo says it only support ddr sdram pc2000 or something like that and it support up to 3gh or something do i get ddr sdram pc2000 and like 100mh for cheap ness?
zipp51 Posted June 2, 2003 Posted June 2, 2003 Depending on the operating system you will install will depend on other components necessary for your upgrade. If it is Windows XP then I would suggest at least a Radeon 7000 64mb card for video. For "cheapness" if the mobo has built in audio(read the specs) then use that for sound. As for memory if your board supports DDR get at least 256mb of it.Tell us what the model of your mobo is and we can give you additional help. There are just too many what if's.
Tinker Posted June 2, 2003 Posted June 2, 2003 The first thing one needs to know when upgrading is how much money do I want to spend. Once you know the amount that you have to play with then you can try and fit your wants into the equation.......

Once you know the amount that you have to play with then you can try and fit your wants into the equation....... agree...there is a MB for AMD XP that support PC133 and DDR, you can just make a switch in the bios for either one and the board isnt that bad as far as perfomance. Iv'e built the last 2 PC in the last month for customers and that is the MB I used for them.Do your budget up first and then go from there.MB - $120CPU (AMD) - $90PS ( Min 350 watt, recommend 400 and up) - $60 - $120Ram ( PC133) - $50-$60 bucks / DDR (pc2700) - $80 - $140Fans - $15 to $30 bucks
