BootPe from a USB Hard drive

Featured Replies

managed to wrangle a 40 gig. USB HD today, trying to install BootPe on it and not having any luck. I've followed the instructions for both a flash drive and a hard drive and tried mixing the 2, still not having any luck. Anyone know how to do this?

What exactly is failing/what is the error? Does your system support boot from USB?

so it will not work under a NTFS system? What if i wanted to save a file bigger than 4g?

If this is a PE install, presumable to fix broken computers, I don't see where you're going to need to put a file greater than 4GB in there. If that's absolutely necessary, make another partion and format that as NTFS. Then access it once you're up and running in PE.

if the USB drive is seen as "Fixed", nothing prevents you from multipartitioning it, once booted NTFS filesystem is fully supported, you will need just a minimal FAT16 partition to boot from

3) idf the USB drive is seen as "Removable", you can use the Hitachi Microdrive Filter Driver to make it "seem" "Fixed":
