Flash Posted May 26, 2003 Share Posted May 26, 2003 Hello, i havent posted here in a while, been busy at school with exams etc, some of you may remember me though Anyways, its that time again and im upgrading my system... Thing is i would like to know the difference between a Barton CPU and Thoroughbred, im looking particulary at the 2800+ CPU, both Barton and Thoroughbred have different clock speeds but same FSB. Is the Barton version of this CPU taking over the thoroughbred version, as both are not always listed on sites...Help appreciated lads, cheers, Flash.(I will update my specs in my sig as they changed, lol). zipp51 Posted May 26, 2003 Share Posted May 26, 2003 If I can recall correctly,they both have .13 micron core size,but the difference is that the Barton has 512 on the core cache L1 and 128 L2 (640k total).The Thoroughbred has 256k on the core cache L1 and 64k L2 (348k total).The Bartons clock at a lower speed but perform better because of the core cache boost. Porn Loader Posted May 26, 2003 Share Posted May 26, 2003 zipp.. you are closethey bothe have 128k of l1 cache. the barton cores have 512k of l2, while the t-breds have 256k.also the fsb is different between the cores.. bartons are 333, while t-breds are still 266.flash, where did you find a t-bred listed as a 2800?the only 2800 i see on amds site are the bartons. they do make 2 models of the 2600 tho (one of each core)i bought a 2500 and love it. it was cheap(er), the board i put it in unlocked all multi's, just a simple multipier change, and i was running at 3000 speeds, didnt need to change any voltages at all.what kind of mother board are you going to use with it? Well i think i will go with a 2800+ Barton then, as it performs alot better than the Thoroughbreds. The mobo i will be using is my original, Gigabyte 7VA-X mobo, which can support 333Mhz FSB and everything else me thinks. As its different to my 2400+ 266Mhz FSB will i need to change anything on my mobo as im moving to a 33Mhz FSB (the Barton). (Never done a CPU change with different FBS ).Cheers, Flash. Porn Loader Posted May 27, 2003 Share Posted May 27, 2003 im not familar w/ gigabyte mobos.. and i havent played w/ via's kt400 yet, so im not much help on that.is the fsb set by jumpers and in the bios? if anything, id set the jumper (if any) to auto detect and go from there.other than that you shouldnt have to change a thing (if the mobo detects the cpu right). if it doesnt you could always go and set it manually.just make sure you present bios supports the 2800, if not time to flash to a newer one. Form my experince, i have noticed that the majority of Mobos detect Athlons Xps to a 100fsb. this seems to be defalt. If you have the 16-2600+ thoubread then the fsb should be 133 if its a 2500+ or other barton care it should be set to 166fsb. They think that the 2800+ is not a barton but still list it compatable with my mobo where there are no other Bartons listed... So i have asked them about this. I have the VIA 4 in 1's, had them for some time actually, dont think they do much Thanks for the link though Porn Loader, i spent ages trying to find that, lol.
