Operating System(s)

Windows System : Microsoft Windows XP/2002 Professional (Win32 x86) 5.01.2600 (Service Pack 2)

When I try to read from the cd the system say´s that ther is no cd in the player.

Can it be soo bad that the laser beem has become broken.

If its a 'factory' CD and works in others...then it could be your Drive is bad...if its a 'custom made' CD...it could be the 'media quality' and your Drive cannot read it...usually updated the 'Firmware' usually adds more media types....Might Check your Manufacturers Site for updated Firmware.

my brother has an XP-based Mitac MiNote 8080 laptop computer that has the Mash-ta DVD-RAM UJ-811b CD/DVD drive. I had similar problems billeh had with his UJ-811 drive but I've partially fixed the problem with the drive my bro has.

You may want to read this:

I used a piece of sandpaper to clean the micro gold connectors at the back of the UJ-811 drive and that got the drive to read ALL kinds of CDs/DVDs. and if the problem happens again, I just take out the drive and clean the connectors with sandpaper again.

well if this keeps on happening then i dont think the connector is the problem. some other more serious thing is wrong with the drive.

BTW the MATs***A are poor quality drives., that's why they have s*** in there name.
 what a name... I find the NECs are good as well.

it might be the arm mechanism that moves the cd lens and some other internal parts of the UJ-811 drive that might be slightly off alignment (perhaps off by a few millimeters); I have that kind of problem. I may have to dis-assemble the drive and clean the internal parts with a paper towel [or even with sandpaper] and attempt to move the parts back into correct alignment. That might not be the prettiest solution and it is NOT a cure-all but it can work for some people.

I DO agree that Mash-ta drives are PIECES OF CRAP, especially when they do NOT even provide "generic" firmware upgrades for the UJ-811 and some other Mash-ta drives.

I may consider getting the NEC CD-2100A drive for the laptop if the UJ-811 drive stops working altogether.

agreed. something more serious than just the laser lens with the uj-811 drive. try buying a CD/DVD Cleaning Kit and use that to clean the UJ-811 drive. If that does not help, then replace the drive with an NEC brand.

it's sad that not all uj-811 drives can use the firmware updates provided by IBM and NEC. If the UJ-811 combo drive came with an IBM laptop, there's a firmware update for it at the IBM site (latest is now H107 from IBM's FWDM11.ISO package) but the firmware update is OEM specific and NOT a generic kind. Mash*ta's firmware updates can only work on certain brands of laptops and not work on others.

for those who have UJ-811 drives in IBM laptops only, latest firmware for them is found here [H107]:

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/d...ocid=MIGR-63596

and for those who have UJ-811 drives in NEC laptops only, firmware updates are found at these sites [H102]:

http://121ware.com/support/download/003/811bh102.exe

http://121ware.com/support/download/003/811rh102.exe

If you do not own either an IBM or NEC laptop and have a UJ-811 drive, you can not use these firmware updates. again, these firmware updates are OEM specific, not generic.
