Hi. I hope someone here can help me out.

I keep getting this blue screen of death. I don't know what is causing it and I don't know how to fix it. I happens randomly while surfing the web.

I just did a clean install of windows. The only thing installed is my firewall (outpost) and my antivirus (fprot).

I don't know what to do.

I am using Windows XP Pro on a 3Ghz P4 with 1GB ram.

Please, if anyone knows what this BSOD means or how to fix it, let me know.

I'd appreciate any help.

The specific BSOD is not listed on Microsoft's Knowledge Base.

But as far as I know, afd.sys is a TCP/IP related file, so I would recommend trying the following things.

1) Insert your Windows Installation CD, start, run, sfc /scannow

2) Update the drivers for your NIC (Network Card) from the manufacturer's website. If it is inbuilt, the go to the MotherBoard's Website and update.

3) If nothing works, dont install the network card.

go to start>control panel>administrative tools>Event Viewer>on the left side go to System and find the error in there and past it into here or give a SS of it.

that should have the error and give us a hint as to what it is.

It could be caused by a bad network card and/or it's drivers. Try installing the latest drivers for your network card, and if that doesn't help, try a different network card. If you have an on board network card, make sure to disable it before trying a PCI one. Hope this helps you.

I have a feeling it is the network card. But the strange thing is, why is this happening all of a sudden?

My PC has been working fine for a very long time. This problem is only happening within the recent last few months.

Nothing has ever changed. It's still the same PC I built about a year ago

What's even more bizzare is that the BSOD is totally random. There is no way to tell when it will strike. I can go for a week without seeing it. Then there are days when I see it multiple times.... really wierd.

psu could be failing. since you just reinstalled windows - try removing firewall, and check if it happens again. if it does, remove antivir and check again. unlikely these are the causes but best to eliminate all possibilities

Coconut could be spot on.

I had similar problems this last few weeks BSOD all over the place.

Finally my PSU litterally blew up taking the mobo out as well.

I suggest you URGENTLY exchange your PSU.

Hint

Make sure that the PSU has enough woumph on the 12v + rail of at least 28amps.

never mind the watts it means nothing

I just bought an 380w antec from e-buyer and a 600w e-buyer special.

no comparison at all the antec blows the 600w away.

buy the best you can afford.

That is the WinSock kernel-mode driver.

So it could be NIC related, or related to malware.

I don't know if it's related to tcpip.sys (if you've patched it).

If the errors are random, it could also be RAM.

Have you tried a win sock fix tool yet?

I tried to upload the file here so you could use it so contact me later. It said I was over the limit but the file is smaller than 1 mb. This is a false error. If you fix it soon let me know how you do it?
