i was wondering if it was better to have 1 512mb stick of memory or 2 256mb sticks of memory running in dual channel.

2x256 if ur mobo supports dual channel, 1x512 if it doesnt

its low, but at least its "OK", better than 265mb anyways.

That's why you should go with 1x512 so if you want to add another 512 one day, you will still have the open slot

but i will still have those other 2 slots if i get 2x256mb, since the motherboard i will get has 4 slots =).

you should get a good motherboard for a nice cheap price from newegg...and get a gig of ram..

There is more than one way to find out, but except reading specs on the net from the mobo's website, the simpliest thing you could do is the RTFM method...
