ardi Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 While putting together a computer for my daughter, the CD-RW was unreliable on read. Some disks were read and others (like the disk that came with the drive) not ok. I did get WinXP Pro installed plus the "NTI CD maker" software. Also installed Nero v 5.5. Both burner apps install without incident but fail to start with a vague message that it had to close. So I replaced the burner. This one reads reliably, but burner software will still not run. All Device Manager indications are normal for the drives. I'm totally stumped. Any ideas out there? Thanks.
Drewdatrip Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Try only using NeroI have heard of haing problems with having serveral burning appz installed at once...=Drew
gamehead200 Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Yea, most of us at MSFN use Nero...I have never had a problem with it !Don't install Roxio Easy CD Creator 5...
ardi Posted February 7, 2003 Author Posted February 7, 2003 Yeah, I like Nero best, but when it hung on start up I tried another cheap one. It did the same thing.Does this sound like contaminated code from the first CD? Should I format and reinstall everything (groan!)?
FthrJACK Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Are your ASPI layers upto date and installed properly?your CD-RW might need a firmware update too.you sound like you know what your doing so i wont go into "how to.." but if your stuck just ask
ardi Posted February 7, 2003 Author Posted February 7, 2003 Oh, those damned ASPI things that Adaptec has and MS doesn't. I remember total confusion.ThenI thought WinXP didn't need them. Let's see--the ones I have (for Win2000 I think) are dated 1999. There is a aspi check program and then the application.Think I need to install them?
Conan Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 It may be too much trouble but I would do a reformat, reinstall the O.S. and then install Nero by itself.
Doggie Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Um.. well i have a problem with my CD burner.. it doesn't accept certain cd brands for instance.. i tried a TDK Brand and it spun and spat it out.. tried a generic brand that was like 15c a cd and it worked.. i suggest going to the CD burner companys website and compatibitly or email them with your concerns and details
FthrJACK Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 @ Doggie.. thats not a "problem" thats regular behavior for some CD burners. they wont accept some brands. my old burner hated gold colored "Mirror Media" discs but was fine with the silver ones. touch wood i havent found anything this light-on wont accept.Ardi.. yes id try update your ASPI layers to the WinXP ones, you can find the download page HEREMake sure you read the manual with it, you install via the command line using switches to select what OS you have. They should make life easier for people who are new to doing things like that.if your version of nero is old it may be looking for the Win2k ASPI layers, fireburner used to do that. my way round it? install both. Didnt seem to cause any problems, eventually fireburner updated and now works with XP ASPI.check your:FirmwareASPI layersBurning software version/updates
ardi Posted February 7, 2003 Author Posted February 7, 2003 Thank you Father Jack wherever you are!!!! w00t I thought I was through with ASPI layers forever, but there they were, lurking in the shadows waiting to bite me. I've built other computers since XP was released and never had a problem. This time, what a nightmare.I really appreciate your your help and suggestions. They really helped me. Thanks
ardi Posted February 7, 2003 Author Posted February 7, 2003 And I mean thanks to all who responded. Not meaning to leave anyone out, I needed all the help I could get.
XP_2600 Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 lok i know its so late but if anyone got the same problem uninstall all the burning software and remove the drive of the CDRW itself from device maanger then do a repair for windows from the Bootable CD then download latest version of nero and install it i think if you dont have a phiscially problem thats going to fix all problems
FthrJACK Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 im not sure what he had wrong, but it look like he was missing ASPI.Anyway cheers 2600, someone might find use for your tip who reads this thread.btw: Welcome to the boards
