Connecting 2 computers together using different OS

i have 2 computer which i want to connect together so i can access files off both of them. 1 computer is using Windows XP and the other is using Windows 2000.

What do i have to do to connect them both together?

u can connect them directly using a crossover cable or over a network using a router

there should'nt be any problems using xp and 2000

I have all the computers connected through a router and i have tried many ways to set the win2000 computer on the network but no luck, any idea on how i do this?

Do some reading here. It'll help you walk through requirements for Windows networking as well as how to troubleshoot and diagnose your problems.

1 thing to check is that if you are using the XP firewall make sure an exception is set for File & Printer Sharing or you may stay having problems. Have the same user account & password you are using on 2000 already created on XP to make things simple. Set the same workgroup. Add the IP addresses used to any 3rd party firewalls & try \\server\share from the run line to connect.

does your router have dhcp and dns enabled? if not you can either enable it or specify manual addresses. type ipconfig in a prompt to see if your two computers are getting addresses from the router ok.

Here are a few things you can do to get you up and running

Open your routers web interface management:

Configure the following settings for the lan

IP Address 10.0.0.1

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

DNS Server (ISP Provided)

IP Address 10.0.0.2

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway 10.0.0.1

DNS Server (ISP Provided)

IP Address 10.0.0.3

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway 10.0.0.1

DNS Server (ISP Provided)

On both computers do the following:

Right click on my computer and go to network identification

Make sure under computer name.. the names of both machines are unique.. ie: PC1 and PC2

Under Workgroup... this needs to be the same ie: HOME

Right click on My computer and select manage

Go to Local Users and Groups -> Users

Make IDENTICAL user account(you can leave all the defaults in there.

IE: PC1: Username: John ; Password: doe

PC2: Username: John ; Password: doe

Disable the Guest account

On windows XP open windows explorer and click on tools-> folder options-> View

and UNCHECK where it says use simple file shareing..

Make sure you have any software firewalls turned OFF (this means Windows Firewall also.

Restart the computers

when they come back up log on to the computer with the username John and password doe

you should be able to successfully access the other PC now

That is why I said to turn off your software firewall. He is being protected by his router

right, but he will want to reconfigure the software firewall once he has things sorted, he won't want to leave that disabled

What about this:

Desktop running XP PRO connects to router by cable.

Laptop running Vista home connects to router wireless.

No hubs or modems.

What can I do to connect them?

Completely new to Vista and just got my laptop so I dont wanna play around with it to much
