Haven't had a problem yet, but have only burnt Verbatim RW(2x), -R(4x,8x) and +R(4x,8x) disks.

Very happy, regular firmware updates (every month), no coasters yet

O ja, paid R650 ($90), but here in South Africa computer stuff is expensive

No, thye're not all made by the same factory in China, though it might seem that way! lol

Plextor has the best build quality and longevity. They keep proving it. They also cost about twice as much. You decide. I have a pile (yes a real pile!) of Liteons from failed machines on my bench. I will never buy one. They work, but don't last long.

I've installed several NECs and found they are quite good, but be sure to upgrade the firmware as the delivered firmware sometimes causes conflicts (drive not seen, crashes, etc).

LGs have a pretty good rep and are pretty solid, but who uses DVD-RAM?

I've personally been using a Sony for the last couple of years and have nothing but praise for it, though I don't like the open/close button and again, make sure you upgrade the firmware.

You want to test two? Go with an NEC and Plextor.

Update: I just read a review about the new LG. For the price (~$50) it is fast and quiet and beeat out both NEC and Plextor on CPU usage.

Get an NEC. I have used several and they are really solid.

Plextor makes a great CDRW. The are behind the 8 ball on DVD Writers. Their new writer is just a rebranded Benq 1640.

thanks for the tips, i have a 3 yr old Phillips that came with my dell... its definately on its way out. lol i think with all the duds its given me i could have bought a couple new ones

Have read and heard some good things about the ASUS DRW 1608P.

They are upposed to be a very good drive. will write @ 6x on 4x DL media. will write @ 16x on most 12x, and some 8x -/+ media. Doesnt have RAM support but who needs it these days.

Try cleaning lense with q-tip & alcohol!!!

got same error from dirty writer, cannot calibrate to write info.
