98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes

Recommended Posts

Thanks for posting this MDGX,

I have a problem with the MP912452.EXE update for WMP9

When I try to run it, it says that I have to install WMP9.0 first??

Offcourse I already have WMP9 installed.

I am also wondering if this update has to be installed in a certain order together with MP832353.EXE

They both update wmp.dll

Same circumstances and problem for me when trying to install this update for WMP 9.0.

I have fixed the update.

The only problem was that it wouldn't work if you had installed the MS06-005 911565 update for 98 and ME. I have resent the patch to MDGx and I am awaiting the new version to be uploaded by him.

Manual fix: Extract the files to a temporary directory and right-click the inf file and select install.

The disabling STMGR and SR are NOT needed because wmp.dll is not protected by Windows ME's sfp feature.

This didn't work for me. The error I received said:

A device attached to the system is not functioning.

I have no idea to what this refers. I'll wait for MDGx to (hopefully) post the corrected patch. ;)

Strange, the rightclick method worked fine for me.

I don't know if this is helpful at all, but I recognise the error.

Sometimes when I reboot (never on a cold start) I don't have sound. Rebooting again or logoff/login makes it work again. But if I haven't noticed that I don't have sound and I start WMP9 (or XMplayer or whatever) than I get this error too.

I never figured out what's behind this (suggestions are welcome), but it is not WMP itself that causes it.

Yes, I did notice that the_guy is the author. Sorry for not making this clear.

The version of ADVPACK.DLL included in the patch is 7.00.5335.5 (winmain(wmbla).060317-1722), which is timestamped, strangely, 01 January 1980. The version I have in %windir%/system is 6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158).

Any thoughts, the_guy?

That computer had the IE7 beta 2 preview installed. If anyone can tell me what patches are affected by this, I will gladly reissue them.

the_guy

EDIT: I know the patches. I will reissue them ASAP.

AVOID using ADVPACK.DLL version 7.x! it might not be compatible with W9x/ME/NT4 systems.

WMP9 KB915565 patch for Win98se/ME has ADVPACK.DLL version 5.50.4134.600 dated 8/9/2004. Try using that one for unofficial WMP9 KB912452 patch and unofficial IE6 SP1 KB905495 patch [iE905495.EXE] for Win98/ME/NT4.

MDGx will need to make the unofficial IE 5.5 SP2 KB905495 patch [Q905495.EXE] work under Win95 as well.

I had been busy in the last several days & I'll be busy next week. I'll be back after Easter.

Erpdude8,

Minor correction: It's not WMP9 KB915565 but KB911565

I have version 5.50.4134.600 only in c:/programfiles/commonfiles/microsoftshared/.

The one in my systemdirectory is 6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)?

Should it be replaced?

Thanks MDGx, as usual, for posting the latest monthly security updates. :)

Just to be clear, there's apparently still an outstanding update for 9x, addressing two Explorer vunerabilities, that, at the time of writing, MS has not yet released:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-015

Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (908531)

Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition are critically affected by this vulnerability. Critical security updates for these platforms may not be available concurrently with the other security updates provided as part of this security bulletin. They will be made available as soon as possible following the release.

I have checked for the MS06-015 KB908531 updates for Win98/ME at the Windows Update site several days ago and I have checked again early this morning, bristols. STILL NOT posted! It looks like the KB908531 updates for Win98/ME have NOT been created yet. I know this happened with the KB891711 and KB888113 updates for Win98/ME. KB891711/MS05-002 was first mentioned in January 2005 but the actual KB891711 updates were posted in March 2005. And KB888113/MS05-015 was first mentioned in January 2005 but the actual KB888113 patches for Win98/ME were also posted in March 2005. that I remember.

Perhaps by the middle of May or June the KB908531 updates for Win98 & ME will be mentioned at Windows Update. I just hope the patches are not like the KB891711 Win98/ME patches that contain a different DLL and EXE files.
