MSNwar Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 This is interesting. I cannot count the times when I have been chatting in AOL Chat Rooms when users had to bite ths bullet.Man Pays $916 for 22 Days of `Free' AOL Terry Thompson, a Nebraska man who lives off of Social Security checks, ended up owing $916.20 because he did not realize he would have to pay long distance charges to access America Online. America Online states that it believes it is clear in its advertising that toll calls or long distance calls may be necessary for subscribers in areas without local access numbers. Lawyers preparing a class action lawsuit do not agree. American Online is being sued by several consumers who made the same mistake Thompson did. AOL's software will direct some people to long distance numbers when there are no local ones available. Some say they are redirected when local lines are busy.Source: www.omaha.comMore
Rick Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 That's gotta suck! I don't know what to think about this though. Just like when you make any other call, you know if it's long distance or not. I think the man is an id*** if you ask me!Rick
MSNwar Posted November 24, 2002 Author Posted November 24, 2002 Yea, I agree. Well, the article says that AOL redirects the call to long distance if local dial-up lines are not available. After installing AOL software for years I have always noticed the message. I think the point the lawyers are going to try and make is that when advertised for free there should be no incidentals. Free is free? Tough one.
Drewdatrip Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 Sux that he had to learn the hard way..but when they say long distance may apply..they really mean it! =Drew
FthrJACK Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 dialup sux fullstop.spend that social security on broadband sucker!! its cheaper in the long run anyway.
Rick Posted November 25, 2002 Posted November 25, 2002 Yeah Tris...time=money. If you are spending more time on here cause it takes all day to get done what you can surf in five minutes...then it takes up your time. But of course, I have found that I spend a lot more time on there cause there's a lot more to do when you have cable. As for the guy, if AOL automatically redirects you to a long distance number then it's not right. I would think that you have to make some choice in this matter though. Interesting...though not interesting enough for me to research this...lolRick
