im here to ask u pipz about s.m.a.r.t.

when i turn the computer on i always see a message

in the hard disk section s.m.a.r.t. capability disabled

a few question that i wold like to know

what does that mean?

what does it do?

why does windows xp installation need it or else

the installation is slow.Why is this?

how do i enable it?

You can enable it in your computer BIOS .

SMART is only useful if you have software installled that supports it (interpretate its output.) For most users SMART is not necessary, you can just disable it if you want.

(However it can't be harmful either so if it works better for you, enable it.)

Actually SMART is useful even without the software if yoursystem BIOS supports it. Many systems will report on drive errors detected by SMART at system boot up.

this is true when you boot with a Windows 98 or ME bootable floppy disk,

windows xp installation will ask you to enable it, if it is disabled or else the copying of files will take too much time and when you enable it it completes copying of files in an instance.

Are you sure about that? Or is it the other way around?

With 95/98(se)/ME and SMARTDISK not activated your installation is slower; it´s not using the free RAM.

But for XP I never saw a message asking me to enable S.M.A.R.T.

smart is about caching disk content in ram

s.m.a.r.t. is about preventing disk write errors using hardware on the drive itself

these are two VERY different thing, yet have vary similar name...

I always enable S.M.A.R.T. in bios. A little over a year ago I started getting the S.M.A.R.T. error message at bootup on one of my hard drives that was part of a RAID 0 array. The error message gave me about a month to back everything up before the drive actually failed.

If you ask me, changing that one little BIOS setting is cheap insurance.

no really7 , enablin SMART is very god, i tried it myself and it saved my soul when i had a worning once. and after i backed up my software i checked it and guess what? a bad sector was found neer boot record and i replaced it by warranty
