Can any of you guys email MS for Q265528 vnetbios.vxd patch? Tried asking for it a few months ago and MS told me it wasn't available.

Just a bit misleading:  In any case, you CAN install WBEM.  In 98lite installs, these sub-components are broken out and can be installed/not installed at the time of initial system install.

WMI requires WBEM, but WBEM does not require WMI.

Regardless of how you get there, the hotfix applies as long as the feature is already installed, mandatory or otherwise.

btw: In WinME, WBEM is a mandatory requirement of the help and support center that forcibly comes up in safe mode.  98meLITE will prevent you from elimination of the WBEM if the help center is enabled, etc.  [Note: Eliminating the help center itself is not recommended as it then makes other things break!]  The point is that WMI itself can be eliminated while it makes sense to keep WBEM there, etc.

Additionally, you made reference to Steve Gibson's site  [GRC] and his tirade against UPNP.  As I understand it, he is referring to the UNFIXED UPNP that precedes these hotfixes and their cousins for WinME and WinXP.  To my knowledge, there is currently no basis for complaining that UPNP represents an ongoing security risk on properly patched systems.  Gibson would better serve common interest pointing out the need to be up to date instead of banning UPNP altogether.

so now it is listed at his web site.

don't know why Gibson said to ban UNNP. I totally agree with CLASYS. best to patch the UPNP security problems and keep up to date.

sorry. Gape has just about all the hotfixes from Windows Update for Win98 SE.

he just needs a few that are not obtainable from any MS web site and that they require

contacting Microsoft support to get them.

Note that Windows Update does NOT offer hotfixes, they offer updates. Do not confuse hotfixes with updates. Hotfixes are patches that are usually obtainable by asking Microsoft support for them. Updates are patches that are available for download at either Windows Update or Microsoft Download Center.

This fix is only intended for WMI (WBEM) installs. WMI is not installed as part of original 98 + 98SE. Only ME installs WMI as mandatory component.

The Wbemprox.dll Q282949 fix requires WMI 1.5 because the wbemprox.dll file included in the patch is version 1.50.1085.45. WMI version included in Win98 SE is v1.1. Install WMI 1.5 from MS article 322363 first, then install Q282949.

Forget about Q230766 and Q243174, Petr. Better to install DirectX 8 or higher because the problems in those two patches are already fixed in more recent versions of DirectX. better yet, install DirectX 9.0c which fixes a security flaw in security bulletin MS04-016. There's NO individual MS04-016 security patch for DirectX addon for Win98/ME because the security flaw is non-critical. Microsoft no longer releases new security patches for Win98/ME unless the vulnerability is "Critical" as they say.

These get installed when you start from WinXP and enable Internet Connection Sharing.  You then can also optionally make an install disk for use with 98 or 98SE [ME and up already have UPNP installed independently, perhaps as an option, but clearly locally available as part of their own install].

Once you use that disk on 98/98se, you now have installed the flawed upnp for 98/se and need to appy the above to fix same, etc.  Note the files have the mark of WinME, thus versions of the form 4.90.300x.

Without the initial upnp installed, these hotfixes give errors similar to how Q329048 gives a complaint caused by not having 98 Plus! installed.  The installer is looking for the previous files to upgrade, etc.

These hotfix files are not new and have always been available since their respective release, etc.  On my own system, upnp allows Windows to notice I have an "NAT Gateway Device" which is my wireless router back to the cable modem, etc.

I would hope that the SP 2 could apply all of these option-dependent fix files as the scenario is always the same:  If the files exist, just replace them with newer ones.  Adding them under any scenario should be harmless at worst.

um, can you list the steps on how to create an install disk to put UPnP on a Win98 fe/se system? I think this requires connecting a Win98 computer to a WinXP computer.

No joke. Q282949 and the Q285895 Cimwin32.dll fixes for WMI 1.5 will have to be excluded from Gape's SP. W98se contains an old version of WMI and these patches do NOT work with the old version of WMI. Both of these patches will check if WMI 1.5 is installed. If it detects WMI 1.5, the patches will install the updated files. If it's an older version of WMI or if WMI is not installed, the patches will not install the updated files.

OLE2.DLL and STORAGE.DLL are same with the 98 SE's. Only version number is changed.

I have iprop.dll version 4.0.1381.326 from NT4 SP6a which is dated 11/18/1999 and this version worked fine under my Win98 & WinME machines. I extracted the iprop.dll file from the full NT4 SP6 pack and put it on my W9x computers. It's newer than the iprop.dll file found in dcom95/dcom98.

iprop.dll file in dcom packages is version 4.0.1381.6 dated 8/20/1997. i believe is the same version included in NT4 SP3.

btw - Q282949 and Q285895 will NOT show up in QFECheck. These patches uses WISE Installer to install the updated WMI components. attempting to install Q282949 or Q285895 with the built-in Win98 version of WMI/WBEM (v1.0 or v1.1) will result in error message "The WMI Components that are installed on this system are incompatible with this setup or too old. Setup cannot continue." The Q282949 and Q285895 patches are for WMI 1.5 only and not older versions of WMI.

atl.dll v3.0.8449.0 is included in IE6 SP1.
