Hd Intensive Work Very Very Slow After Sp2.0rc1

Recommended Posts

First problem after installing SP2.0rc1b;

-I open Virtual Dub (version 5.1.5.1-P4)

-click Video, Direct Stream Copy

-Open a +- 350 Mb AVI file

-Append another +- 350 Mb AVI File (or even not but that's just to do something)

-Save as Avi

As both audio and video are in "Direct Stream copy" mode there is no image or sound processing. VirtualDub is merely copying datas from two files to merge them in one single file but it's playing with hundreds of Mb at once.

Normaly, when no other program are in use, this task should takes 2 or 3 minutes but after the upgrade with SP2.0RC1b, it takes 8 to 10 minutes!

However, the computer is not slower when compressing video to DivX, which is, unlike dierct stream copy, very CPU intensive and little Hard Drive intensive.

So, it's a problem with reading/writing the hard drive...

Now I do have a problem, if I understand with the primary drive, Drive C?, on which I was working.

I tried to re-install a driver for this device from the W98se CD, but it said that the best driver is already installed. I don't know what to do.

Now I will run the SP2.0 english again over the french version, that was over original install that was over SP2.0 english.

I also forgot the name of the manufacturer of the drives... and I should open the case and pull it out to know.

Ok, I re-installed SP2.0 RC1 english but it didn't help and the Primary IDE controller problem is still there.

one more detail about Virtual Dub:

The statu window when the operation is running, is freezing from time to time.

For example there is a box "Time elapsed". Normaly on this box you should see the seconds counting up one by one. 32,33,34,35,36,37 etc.

Here it goes like that: 32,(wait),40, (wait),45,(wait),47,(wait),51 etc

SiS IDE drivers?

Yes. I ran the main set up from the Sis mainboard cd-rom.

Nothing changed.

Then on this cd-rom I found a directory with IDE drivers. I installed the IDE driver for w9x then I couldn't restart my computer: Black screen.

I restarted in save mode but the CD-rom drives were not visible anymore.

With another computer I copied the IDE driver installation files on a floppy. I ran the uninstal from the floppy and now everything is like before the IDE drivers installation.

Note that I never installed this driver before, I only did the main set up.

The problem with Virtual Dub remains, but I'm sure that the drivers as I had before were re-installed.

Even more hard drive problem:

Nero is very slow too.

I wrote 700Mb on a normal CD-r at 32X.

Normaly it should take 3 minutes. Now it takes 6min30!

The used buffer is at max. But the Buffer Level (the small progress bar) is abnormaly low and very variable (from 5% to 80%) while normaly it should stay between 90% and 100%.

I just downloaded and installed a 5Mb IDE driver from SiS...no effect.

I checked Control Panel/System/Performance

It says the following:

Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance.

Drive C is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

Drive D is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

The help reads:

_____________________

Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance.

Windows was unable to identify a real-mode driver or memory-resident program loaded in your Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file. You will see another message that lists the name of the driver or program causing the problem.

Because Windows could not identify the driver or program, it has switched to MS-DOS compatibility mode to ensure the program will run. However, this decreases overall performance. To improve performance, remove the program or driver causing the problem, or contact its manufacturer for an upgraded version.

Now, I disabled both autoexec.bat and config.sys in the Start Up Configuration utility. No effect neither.

____________________

Drive X is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

This problem often occurs on more than one drive. Usually it is caused by a driver listed in the Config.sys file that Windows does not recognize and that is related to the message Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance. If you see both messages, see the Help for the Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance message first.

If you only see the message Drive X is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system on one drive, that drive is using an MS-DOS compatibility (real-mode) driver, which may reduce that drive’s performance. Contact your hardware manufacturer to see if an updated driver is available for your drive. If not, the drive’s performance may be less than optimal, but you can still use it.

Boot in safe mode.

On the Device Manager, remove any IDE controllers and Primary, Secondary IDE controllers. Reboot in normal mode. Let the Windows recognise your IDE controllers and devices.

This should solve the problem.

Boot in safe mode.... This should solve the problem.
Thanks for your anwser. I'm now far from my computer (FFMC) and I will be able to fix that only in 3 weeks when I'll be back home.

This is what I did before reading your last post.

I think it may be important you read this:

I uninstalled the SP2.0 from the control panel's uninstal manager.

Then again, I couldn't restart my computer.

The black screens were going normaly until I could read "can't find MYMEM.SYS", "can't start" some exe (I couldn't read properly because everything went so fast), then it read "Windows failed to start. Please reinstal windows".

And the computer shut down himself half a second later.

I had to reinstal w98 from the CD, via a bootable floppydisk. (only the 3d time in a week  )

Now the problem with the IDE is fixed, but I have the SP2.0 uninstalled of course.

When I'll be back home I will reinstall it and do the trick you suggested.

What I want to suggest after this experience is that you check what can cause a restart failure after an uninstal. (Eventhought it could be that my system files was already severly corrupted from some previous operations.)

Unless you know already what's that all about.

Second that you advice poeple who instal/unistal SP2.0, to get a boot disk handy. ;)

What version of Nero are u using Fredledingue?

v.6 I think.

Anyway, it's not a problem with nero, it was clearly a problem with the IDE drivers.

The example with nero just illustrated what can happend with this kind of problem.

I can't remove the IDE controlers.

I get a message (with the "ok" button grayed out) reading:

This device is part of a multi-function device and cannot be removed independently.

To remove this device, select and remove the multi function parent. This will also remove the multifunction deivces that are part of this multi function device.

Parent deivce:

Sis 5513 Dual PCI IDE controler

It doesn't say what the parent device is and I don't know how to remove it.

PLEASE HELP!

yes, you need to remove the parent controller - you can not remove the "children".

Remove your SiS Dual IDE controller and the children will be removed too...(just have the driver ready for when Windows searches for a driver....)

I removed the Sis Dual IDE controler, then replaced it by Standard Microsoft IDE controler after reboot.

I got a blue screen reading

Your multifunction device (Standard Dual PCI IDE controler) has some child devices using 32-bit drivers and others using compatibility mode drivers. This configuration is not supported, so your computer has been halted to prevent corruption.

After you restart your computer, windows will use compatibility mode drivers for each child device attached to the multi-function device.

If you don't want to use 32-bit drivers, you may be able to obtain an update driver for the device that caused the problem by contacting your hardware manufacturer, or you can disable the device.

I was never able to restart my computer other than by pressing the reset button.

There were problem with drives A,C and D now.

I restarted in safe mode and removed the standard driver. I replaced it by the Sis Dual IDE controler after reboot.

I restarted normaly.

The problem with drive A disapeared but the problem with drives C and D remained as before.

And now I can't see my CD-ROM drives anymore! :realmad:

PLEASE HELP!

OK, I have for the nth time reinstalled W98se via bootable floppy.

(I have also made a copy of the installation cd-rom of w98se and the sis drivers on the hard drive for the next time.)

I was trying to reinstall the sis drivers after installing SP0.2, but it didn't help.

What are the files or settings that i should preserve so that SP2.0 doesn't mess with the IDE drivers?

When my system was working again I did one more try.

I did exactely what you said, rebooted in safe mode, removed the IDE drivers in Device Manager, restarted normaly, let it find the best driver etc... without effect.

The problem is still there and the only way I know so far to remove this f@#! MS-dos compatibility mode on my hard drives is to reinstall windows.

(I'm even lucky when it let my cd-rom drives available)

So, please, what are the files or settings that i should preserve so that SP2.0 doesn't mess with the IDE drivers?
