I am having major issues with burning a CD since i've upgraded to SP2. Here is the sequence of events:

1. Formatted drive, reinstalled Windows XP and upgraded to SP2 (from SP1).

2. Installed all necessary drivers (video, audio, network adapter, etc)

3. Installed Nero

4. Attempted to burn a cd with Nero and cd gets up to 5% and I hear the DVD-RW kick into "high gear" and then slow back down again, and shortly after the cd ejects saying error on the screen.

I have tried burning with Windows Media Player, XP & Nero. I've also swapped the DVD-RW with a Sony CD-RW 52X that I have and that didn't work either. I was led to believe that it was my ASPI drivers, so I updated them and that didnt work either.

I need help!

Well, now i've uninstalled Nero and it still doesn't work with Windows Media Player either (which is why I believe its a SP2/driver issue).

It was Nero Ultra 6.0

what brand media is it?

did u try with a better brand?

also what does the buffer show?

i'd assume since its a dvd-rw it would have a buffer-underrun protection but still...

nothing to do with aspi drivers... who told u that?

which version of nero?

Verbatim discs and the buffer is at 100% the whole time. It locks up at the exact same place every single time.

I just uninstalled SP2 and it didn't fix the problem. I don't know what else it could be but i've absolutely had it with this drive and Windows. I'm so frustrated right now.

Nero is 6.0 Ultra but I have same problem with Windows Media Player.

Well, I found out what the problem was (even though it take a reinstall of Windows to fix it). I had installed the nVidia IDE Controller which replaced the primary and secondary controllers and it some how interfered with the cd writing process. It worked out OK and everything is working great now.

According to the Microsoft book "Windows XP Inside/Out" you MUST disable the XP supplied burn software (limp version of ECDC 5.5) when installing ANY third party burn software. If you don't believe me read page 854. Open Windows Explorer, right click all of your burners, select Properties, Advanced tab, and uncheck "Enable Recording on this drive". In some cases you may have to uninstall any third party burn software to do this, and then reinstall your third party burn software.

It seems the version of nVidia nForce IDE Controller I have (that came with MB) must be outdated/defective. I opted out of installing it the second time around and no problems at all. I now have Primary and Secondary IDE Controller on my Device Manager (where before I did not). Thanks for everyones input!
