got a dvdrw for the holidays but it did not come bundle with any software. what software can you recommend I buy? I have a plexor externam USB PX-504UF

Nero Burning ROM or Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator

The first one is much simpler, and cheaper but it's the best

1. DVDDecrypter to rip, the simplest and best, also free. http://www.dvddecrypter.com/

2. DVD2One to resize. http://www.dvd2one.com/

3. Nero to burn. http://www.nero.com/en/

Well i figured it out with clonedvd.

I like to remove the PUO's and whatnot, you need to first 'decrypt' the dvd in order to do this.

1) DVD Decrypter

2) Clonedvd + Anydvd

3) DVD Shrink

DVDXCopy works well too.

I use DVD Decrypter for 1:1 copies (discs <4.38Gb) or ripping to HDD as it's sometimes faster or more convenient to shrink them from HDD later. DVD Shrink does everything else--it will rip+shrink+make iso to burn in DVDDecrypter.

These are the only tools I've found necessary for DVD copies.

dvdshrink is the best.
