m1m1m1m1m1m1... (nice name...)

There is an FAQ in the security bulletin that indicates what changes are made and the reason for releasing another updated version. It also indicates that the changes that were made from the previous version

The new bulletin only applies to SP2... IF you did NOT already apply the earlier hotfix.

However, if you already applied the earlier version, and you are running SP2, then you don't need the new update.

Apparently, from the updated security bulletin, they made some changes to the new version of the hotfix that apply to the other operating systems and service packs... as I quoted in my previous post.

If your intentions are to build an unattended CD, then it's certainly OK to use the new version, but this is not a required update to an already patched system.

The FAQ may say that the changes are for 2000 but the download link for the fix for windows sp1/sp2 link to a version 2 of the hotfix. also there is a size difference between version 1 and this new releaced version for sp2

No argument there. And you are almost right. The FAQ indicates that it applies to more than just Windows 2000. It also applies to XP-SP1. But if you applied the earlier version of the patch to an XP-SP2 system, you are already safe and don't need to reapply the patch.

As I said earlier, you CAN (and probably should) download this file to add to your unattended SP2 CD for future builds. But I wouldn't sweat over trying to apply this patch to hundreds/thousands of XP-SP2 machines that had the old hotfix installed. You are already covered.

I'am not correctly understood you last post. I thought you say that it's totaly not for xpsp2.

Now I comprehend the cause of problem. I see the KB again and i agree that v 2.0 not needed

to apply over 1.0 if it's already installed. This trouble appear because ms include updates

for diffrent system (sp1 & sp2) in one pack, and size of update pack changed because ms

shamanized with sp1 files in this pack. I don't have a deal with such situation before.

I'll change post with update.

Can anyone tell me if this list of critical updates for XP Pro SP2 is complete?

I want a quick'n'dirty list of all critical updates prior to SP2 in the order MS released them. Rather than integrate these hotfixes into my unattended install I simply renamed the files to include the release date (e.g. 2005-12-05_KB905915.exe) and then execute them -- in chronological order -- with a .cmd file. A few hotfixes were giving me errors the first few times I tried to integrate them; I think the problem was that I tried to install them out of order. (The list in this thread's original post is not in chronological order, and some of the release dates simply do not match the published dates according to MS.)

EDIT: sonic informed me that chronological order is not actually important/necessary, but I think it's still nice to have a short list like this as a quick reference.

NOTE: I did not include the GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374) because it is not required for Windows but is actually for software like Office, Picture It!, Visual Studio .NET, etc.

The guide doesn't mention it (maybe for a reason), but if you use the systeminfo command from a command line, it lists the hotfixes that have been applied to your installation.

What I don't understand about the systeminfo output is that the first 38 hotfixes all say "File 1". Can anyone explain this or point me to an explanation? [My search of "File 1" did not turn up any results.]

If it matters, my OEM XP disk includes SP2.
