Jazz Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 Hmm for the intro fellas, i have a seagate 120gig 7200.7 7200rpm hdd, 2mb cache.. ideally it should transfer at very high speeds... liek for eg to move or copy a 700 mb iso from one partition to another , ideally it shouldnt take more than 40 secs...BUT, in windows it takes more than 2 minutes... i'm using intel application accelerator and the ide controller drivers are the latest... so wass happening ??, ok i've been a long lost linux user, so just to try my luck i tried booting with knoppix, set up my dma, read ahead thingy's etc etc and voila... it takes 39secs to do the same task !!! why ???for some insight, i have the cdrom and the hdd on the same cable... but i also removed the cdrom completely and rechecked... still the same problems !i was almost gonna buy a new hdd just cuz of this u know.. this is getting really annoying, and i have a very serious belief that some of the new hotfix is causing this silly stupid bug... but i dunno for sure..Please help me. !!Bye,Jazzps:- oo btw i'm using linux now and ohh boy it feels wonderful, i'm getting a strong urge to shift back to linux
dtmunir Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 heeey!!! i ddint know thisi hv a seagate 40 GB (yeh i know its tiny ) 7200 rpm driveit NEVER takes 40 seconds to move 700 mb. takes around 4 mins!!!anyone tell me wts goin on here??danish
Jazz Posted May 30, 2004 Author Posted May 30, 2004 ok well u need to give some more info... likeHdd Model no:Os used :and have u connected the cd rom and hdd to the same channel ? are u using the 80 conductor cable ?Which chipset are u using, (intel, via, sis etc..), and is the dma enabled ? etc etc...People, pls tell me wass goin on ! i'm goin crazzy... has anyone else experienced this ?? i'm on winxp with all the hotfixes installed (sp1).. the same drive was working fine a few months ago, until i started really slow disk transfer rates and then i decided to investigate...The worst part that its working absolutely perfect in linux...Bye,Jazz
dtmunir Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 ok..heres the info:hd: seagate 40 Gb 7200 rpm (ST340016A)os: win xp prohddisk master on primary cablecd rom slave + cd writer master on secondary cabledont know whether its 80 pin or 40 pin? how can u tell. doesnt say anythin on the cable itselfits the Asus p4p800 deluxe mboard, and uses an intel chipset (i hope )how do i check dma- enabled. i checked my primary IDE channel in device manager, it has dma mode on auto select, and current mode says Multi word DMA mode 2.thx a lotdanishps: love ur signature, even though im a pro-microsoft guy, its really witty,
XtremeMaC Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 well not really what u're looking for but I believe fragmentation could cause that...yes it uses intel chipset, as a matter of fact my friend just bought the same mb today i865 chipset I believe. hdd should be on the 80 pin one its grey colored if u're using the cables that came with the mb. 40 pins go for the cdroms. hmm serial ata exist on that board so why don't u use the sata interface instead of the ide??? (well obvious reason u might not have sata hdd but i'd think if u bought a mb with sata u should buy a hdd with sata support )
Jazz Posted May 31, 2004 Author Posted May 31, 2004 ohh, thank gosh u're here eXtreme... i really needed some pro advice...Ok the thing is that if there was any fragmenation in the hdd, its pretty obvious that Linux and windows wud have to deal with it in the same way, cuz as i dont have any linux installed on my hdd, instead i had booted it from my cdrom, that makes the things more complicated...as i have my cdrom and hdd on the same cable, hence booting linux from the rom and copying the files, should instead be much slower in linux.. but instead the results are even more faster than having only my hdd on the data cable in windows i'm totally confused ! i bet it has to do something with the hotfixes, or the chipset inf utility or the intel application accelerator..I'm very sure that most of the guys here have a intel chipset board, and obviously they all have the latest chipset inf's installed 5.1.1.xxxx and also they wud be using the intel application accelarator 2.3 , so why sint it affecting them ?? or is it that they have been affected and they are'nt aware of it ???ok, i got 7200 rpm drive and it takes ~3 mins to copy one 700 mb file from any partition to any partition..How much time does it take for you ??Please help me out with this, as my primary os is windows and i dont want to live in an inferior surroundings BYe,Jazz
Alanoll Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Intel 865PE Chipset. From one hdd on primary channel, to another on the same channel.File size : 679 MB.Time Taken : 8 Seconds.Type of HDDs: Maxtor and WD.Speed: 72008MB cache.IDE connected. (though I do have 2 SATA connections, I don't ahve the drives).Intel Application Accelerator? I don't believe that has ever touched my system.
Jazz Posted May 31, 2004 Author Posted May 31, 2004 8 seconds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are u kiddin me !! OMG OMFG OMDFG !!!!jees.. u just made me feel like a ***in PIG ! i'm disgraced of myself.. i'm gonna suicide the minitue i turn 99yrs !Ok lets get down to buisness... how much do u want for that $$$ Ok ok ok, just kidding.. man look what have u done to me !! phew.. hmm,... well tell me the transfer rates from the same hdd to the same hdd in the same channel !Lets see how much do u get it then eh !Bye,Jazz
Alanoll Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 17 seconds.Any other tests you want? My system is neccesarily all that fast, a mere 2.4 ghz P4I should also point out....I have 3 harddrives, 3 CDROMs (DVD burner, DVD ROM, CD burner). 1 gig of PC3200 ram. I had to make up for the lag of having 3 hdds
Jazz Posted May 31, 2004 Author Posted May 31, 2004 duh, how have u connected all that ? pls specify the ide configuration..i too have a 2.4 ghz, but i dont think that makes a hell lotta difference, as the dma is supposed to get past that...There has to be something wrong witm my config... maybe its the 2mb cache drives ? hey but the thing is that i need help ! my hdd transfers are very very slow now, pls suggest something.. Bye,Jazz
dtmunir Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 8 seconds??????????? HOWWW?? thts just insane....i hv almost FOUR MINUTES!!! :'( i lead a pathetic and SAD lifei should be SHOTbtw...i dont hv intel application accelarator installed. but do u really think tht can make such a difference..im going to install it right now and see if it does!!
XtremeMaC Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 lol @dtmunir well again a small chance but if u're copying like 1000files/folders total at 700mb creating them takes little more time than just copying a file that's 700mb. also if u've partitioned your hdd and moving from 1 part to the other that also slows things down. other than these maybe it depends on the brand of the hdd, brand of the mb,
Alanoll Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 alrighty....I have one hdd connected on the primary channel. Two hdd connected to a ATA133 card (right there is a bottleneck) on the primary channel. One CDROM connected to the secondary channel of the ATA133 card. The other two CDROMs on the secondary mobo channel.I DON'T have Intel Application Accelerator installed. My first test, was from one of my harddrives on the ATA133 card to the primary, and the second was from Primary to Primary. My system is not overclocked at all. So it's not that. Perhaps you need the mobo drivers installed? Like all the bus drivers?AS for the cache, it really does help. Not by that great of difference however, should only add a fraction to the time.It could also be that you have other processes running. Even though the file copy doesn't seem like it, it still gets channeled through the processor.
