Karla Sleutel Posted January 9 Posted January 9 And for rather younger people like me, HDDs are not popular anymore, I think they are in decline, everyone just streams these days. That would explain the pitiful quality! 2

I would never ever buy a Western Digital, all the ones I've tried have failed!!! I don't know how many hours of use it had, I was able to open Cristal Disk and see that there were no major errors, but I didn't find the number of hours tab at that time. I only saw that there were no major errors. Maybe you were unlucky. I had no bad experience with Western Digital HDDs: 1) An old Inspiron 7500 Pentium III laptop, dedicated to just downloading stuff 24/7, has a 1TB laptop HDD WD10JPVT inside, as 2nd HDD. This WD HDD has been working surprisingly well, health 100%, running and reading/writing continuously 24/7, 1527 power on days, 987 total start/stop, total data written onto it maybe 20TB. 2) The 320GB IDE laptop HDD WD3200BEVE is great for retro-computing. They have worked fine for me as 2nd and 3rd HDDs inside an Inspiron 7500 laptop (Pentium III, one FAT32 partition 298.1GB), under Win98 and WinXP, I have not seen IDE laptop HDDs of other brands with 320GB capacity. This is the noise that started to sound on the Seagate hard drive model ST3000DM0001. Now if I connect the hard drive I hear some beeps, as if the hard drive had an internal speaker. It is true that some models can be turned back on, but this is not the case. Respectfully @Cixert, I know you're a good guy, but you should always listen to D.Draker. xD I literally ate tons of HDDs. Buy Enterprise grade drives, only those are still being made somewhat good. EDIT. @Karla Sleutel, EFRX is a good choice, sucks they don't produce them anymore, Edited January 9 by D.Draker 2

The label doesn't mean it was produced by WD, For example, somewhere in 2016, WD acquired Hitachi, they are of good quality. They only produce 6TB and up, for WD. Example: WD80EZZX and WD80EFZX are labelled as US7SAJ800 equating an Ultrastar He8-8 model. 2

I have about 30+ 1TB and 2TB WD SATA HDDs, mainly manufactured 2019 and later, no issues, also 20+ 2nd hand WD SATA HDDs with lower capacity, with manufacturing dates going back to 2011. I also have Hitachi HDDs. I started to like Western Digital because their Data Lifeguard Tools v11.2 could DDO OK WD-brand HDDs >137GB for the Inspiron 7500 under Win98. I used WD HDDs DDOed with DLG v11.2 for about 5 years, until I found out that the Win98 "137GB unofficial patch (for IBM only)" also works with the 240 heads, SSE-only Dell Inspiron 7500. Cixert Posted January 21 Author Posted January 21 @D.Draker What you don't say is which brand of hard drive doesn't break easily and lasts for many years.

Cixert, as of lately, I enjoy WD models they acquired from Hitachi, they are still made by Hitachi. For example, take a look, the HDD is almost always on 24/7, since 2020, no problems so far. Millions of reads/writes almost every day, heavy usage. But they need proper cooling. But a simple vent would do just fine, too. 2
D.Draker Posted January 21 Posted January 21 For some reason, the attachment didn't work the first time. Here's my WD made by Hitachi, works since 2020. WD80xxxx is rather old, the newer ones most likely changed their names to something else, so please, do a research before you buy. https://www.pcworld.com/article/468946/western_digital_closes_hitachi_gst_acquisition_to_operate_separate_subsidiaries.html 2

Thank you, what do you think about the WD 'Easystore' external drives which seem to work with Windows XP in MBR mode up to 16 TiB. https://msfn.org/board/topic/177171-what-a-single-8tb-mbr-hard-disk-drive-looks-like-in-windows-xp/page/5/#findComment-1276853 I have already mentioned that I have found several broken Western Digital drives. They were internal hard drives between 128 Gb (IDE) and 1 Tb (SATA). Edited January 22 by Cixert

As an advice to a friend, there's a much higher chance to get a decent HDD inside of My Book, and then simply throw the box away. It will save you money. It's usually cheaper than buying a retail dive. But like I said, please do a research, people oftenly post photos of what they get inside of that box. Edited January 23 by D.Draker a typo 2
