What version of uBlock for Windows 7 ?

7zip also works.  I tend to use Uniextract for rarer archive types than just a .zip renamed as a .crx.

A .crx is just a .zip with the extension's private key included as metadata.

Any .zip tool will extract them.  Then I use Chrome/Chromium to repackage as a .crx + .pem.

OK ... I think I have everything fixed. I just had no idea auto-updates were happening till yesterday. The latest version uBlock 1.62 seemed to be OK but I  decided to remove that version and either go with the two versions that were mentioned by Karla Sleutel and NotHereToPlayGames earlier.

Karla Sleutel - I'm sticking with 1.49 Developer version, later ones give me headaches, slow start with a yellow exclamation mark.

NotHereToPlayGames - I use uBlock 1.52.2. I do notice that 1.52.2 'seems to be' a little faster.

So for now I will give version 1.52.2 a try and see how that works for a few months.

This is the site where I am finding these (and other) versions ... if others are interested.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/versions/

Thanks to all for the assistance.

I use 1.59.0 here at work and hate it!

Hate is probably too strong a word.  I've been meaning to drop it back down to 1.52.2 but I have to literally .zip from home and attach to an MS Teams chat.  Work "security" will not allow me to email it to myself and will not allow downloading.

I use the "purge" function for lists quite often and newer versions of uBO removed that function.  Unsure "when" it got removed or even "why".  I read the changelog when it happened, just forget offhand as to when/why.

Unpack the extension with Uniextract, install from "Developer Mode", it will never update then.

I had never heard of Uniextract till mentioned in your post. It's listed as working on Win7 and called 'Universal Extractor 2' at MajorGeeks.com. Is this the same program that you were referring to in your earlier post?

Universal Extractor 2.0.0 RC3 / Requires: Windows 10/8/7 (58.6 MB)

https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/universal_extractor_2.html

I also  found a portable version at PortableApps listed. It seems to indicate it will work on Windows 7, maybe even Win XP.

Universal Extractor 2 (UniExtract2)

https://github.com/Bioruebe/UniExtract2

System requirements:

In short: Windows XP or newer. However, outdated version of Windows only have limited support:

Windows 7: sending feedback requires you to follow this guide by Microsoft, otherwise it will fail

Windows XP: any online functionality, such as the updater or the feedback dialog, is disabled for security reasons. Also some extractors might not work.

Anything to further add about what version ... hoping to be able to go with the 'portable version' ... I hate to install anything on my computer if I don't have to.

Again, thanks for the mention of this program. Sometimes 'this question or that question' leads to more  information about  'something new'.

Thanks to NotHereToPlayGames and the information on 7zip also working. I have that installed but it won't hurt to also have a version of Extractor available for something 'unusual'.

You're very welcome! Any version should do just fine, I run the newest, and the old 2.0 (RC2) also works fine. I just like Uni much better 'cause it supports a much wider range of files, and even some odd installers packed as exe.

Use the portable, of course!

Good morning.

Meanwhile, there is to consider that uBlock Origin, which works better in Firefox, than in chromium-based browsers, updated to the latest version, may have features specific to this browser that were not previously necessary for better content blocking.

But even those who want to use older versions in chromium-based browsers give up functionality, for example, the new scriptlets, that could improve the work of the extension.

The deprecation of the purge feature, because it was abused by many, has been replaced by differential updates.
And moreover at startup, the extension checks and possibly updates filter lists, there is no need to update filter lists more often.
I write this but these are the exact words written by Gorhill when he made this deprecation.

Of course, those who want to use even uBO versions that are almost 2 years old ,for me,can continue to use them.

Agreed!

The issue "for me" is that I do not, under any circumstance, allow any "at start" update checks!  I read the changelog on "differential updates", but have not isolated within the source code on just "how" they work.

I can only suspect that a line-of-communication exists that transmits header data "at startup" and only fetches a new list if the header indicates a "differential difference".

I applaud the idea so as to prevent server-load issues with too many people downloading too large of lists, whereas the header data is a few bytes compared to megabytes for the full list.

Again, I applaud the idea.  I just do not want the at-start line of communication.

Personally, my method is LESS OF A SERVER LOAD.  Since I control the line of communication and perform it once every weekend or so instead of a hundred launches every day.

As always, "to each their own".

It's all relative.  I spent way way WAY more time keeping XP "useable".  But I certainly don't look back and call it a "hassle".

Anybody running XP or 7 in 2025 has to be taking time to study and test.  It's not a "hassle", just part of the day, run of the mill, same ol', same ol'.

if you tweak your OS every day just to make it work, then something is really wrong with your setup
as for surfing and doing daily changes to these versions... that is a freaking waste of time

We are here to study, if you don't, then don't reply. No one's interested to read your spam.

Agreed.  For me, it wasn't a matter of tweaking the OS.

Rather, browsing the "modern" web in XP just became way way WAY too much of a WEEKLY HASSLE.

I don't regret "learning experiences" from that HASSLE, but I for one have no regrests in finally ditching XP.

But I still use an OS that has no "support" so I still qualify for all of the "older OS" threads, lol.
