This error appear after reboot because you don't install net framework 4.0 yet .

The next reboot the error will not appear to you in normaly case.

Please install the latest extended kernel it make your system more compatible

As said by @WinWord2000 before, v3.1h is the latest extended kernel version at the moment.

I have windows 2000 on my second partition as drive D:

I still cannot install .net wlu files.

I'll look at the email clients...

It exists at the WLU site. Go to Manual Update, then write net framework in Search Keyword, this is the 1 labeled "Microsoft .Net Framework 4.0 for Extended Kernel(v2)"

downloading the .net 2.0 sp2. using wlu 1.5b now... now .net 4 sp4 installed, i will install Windows2000-KB935839-v31hM-x86-ENU.wlu, 1st install ok, 2nd install ok..waiting for reboot. same ngen error with .net 4 installed.

big difference in size.

overwrote it. will try installing it once .net 2 sp2 is installed.

Installing .net 4 sp2..start..working

It has the same name but , i think it is not same in reality depend the error message appeared to verta .
