jaclaz Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 Only for the record, SVCHOST.EXE is a sort of "catch all" for services. You will need process explorer (or similar) to understand which actual service is "behind" svchost.exe. https://www.raymond.cc/blog/identify-loaded-svchostexe-in-windows-task-list/ And, possibly this will also help: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/process_activity_view.html jaclaz 3

I figured it out thanks to that. it was the file history or whatever it's called in vista. I enabled defender again and everything is working as it should. lemme get back to the trim though. Vista doesn't do it automatically? I mean I've never touched the trim option on w8.1 for like 2-3 years...

This is why programs such as SSD tweaker exist for Vista and XP. Only Win7+ has auto trim support 1

I've had a few problems with the ancient and now outdated Windows defender on SSD , so I uninstalled it permanently. Don't know why that was conflicting 1

monkeylove Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 (edited) From what I remember, Win 8.1 is supposed to work fine with SSDs, with defrag automatically trimming. Also, some SSD manufacturers have software to make sure that the system is set to work with their product and that firmware is updated. Finally, for browsers like Firefox, a tweak can be made so that it won't use the SSD that much: https://www.servethehome.com/firefox-is-eating-your-ssd-here-is-how-to-fix-it/ Edited December 28, 2020 by monkeylove
