Good file compressor

Recommended Posts

I am not talking about the ones we all know, but I am seeking one that will heavily compress files. I know my expectations are probably unrealistic, but I would like to ask before giving up. Is there a utility that could potentially compress a 1gb file all the way down to 100mb or less?

Thank you!

Sure, there is no problem whatever in doing impossible things :w00t:.

The problem is  to highly compress the files (in a reasonable time, using reasonable resources), and then to re-expand them obtaining the same as the original (as well in a reasonable time, using reasonable resources) .

You can still try KGB:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/kgbarchiver/files/

Or go directly to BARF:

However nowadays I would try ZCM (which is the successor of Nanozip):

and/or its other "brothers" by Francesco Nania

Something to keep in mind is that if you distribute this. It will take you a long time to compress. However, it will also take a very long time for anyone to decompress, especially on older computers.
