FantasyAcquiesce Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 I am not talking about the ones we all know, but I am seeking one that will heavily compress files. I know my expectations are probably unrealistic, but I would like to ask before giving up. Is there a utility that could potentially compress a 1gb file all the way down to 100mb or less? Thank you!
jaclaz Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 Sure, there is no problem whatever in doing impossible things . The problem is to highly compress the files (in a reasonable time, using reasonable resources), and then to re-expand them obtaining the same as the original (as well in a reasonable time, using reasonable resources) . You can still try KGB: https://web.archive.org/web/20080912112144/http://kgbarchiver.net/ https://sourceforge.net/projects/kgbarchiver/files/ Or go directly to BARF: http://mattmahoney.net/dc/barf.html However nowadays I would try ZCM (which is the successor of Nanozip): http://heartofcomp.altervista.org/Zcm.htm and/or its other "brothers" by Francesco Nania jaclaz 1
Tarun Posted July 4, 2019 Posted July 4, 2019 Something to keep in mind is that if you distribute this. It will take you a long time to compress. However, it will also take a very long time for anyone to decompress, especially on older computers.
