Probably a dumb question, but must your computer be turned on AND have Internet Explorer opened, or just tuned on. Running Windows 8.1 on the one and Windows 7 on the other computer. Have cable internet. Thanks, Mike

Must you have the computer turned on, AND have Internet Explorer opened, to get Automatic Updates. I have Windows 7 on the one computer and Windows 8.1 on the other. Thanks, Mike

NO need of having Internet Explorer (or any other particular program) open.

As long as the PC is ON, there is a working internet connection and Automatic Updates are set correctly the updates will be downloaded alright.

There is also no need of being logged in.

Consider how a number of automatically delivered updates when installed may need to reboot the PC, so it is - generically speaking - not advisable to leave open programs as they may /they shoudl not, but they still may) either prevent the shutdown and reboot or lose unsaved data.

OK I wasn't sure... I think the "does the computer need to be on" part was throwing me off. I'm sure we'll see the ability to install updates while the PC is off in some future version of Windows.
